FAQ
Can a non-resident open a personal account abroad?
In many countries yes, but the conditions differ: some banks need only a passport and proof of income, others want residency or a minimum balance. Each country page explains what to expect.
Do I need a residence permit to open a bank account?
Not everywhere. Many banks serve non-residents but ask for a fuller document pack and sometimes a higher balance. In some countries an account without local status is close to impossible.
What counts as proof of source of funds?
Documents explaining where the money came from: employment income, dividends, a property sale, an inheritance. The bank looks at the chain, not just the amount, and gaps between your forms and documents are a common reason for refusal.
Will my tax office find out about a foreign account?
Most likely yes: most countries exchange information automatically under CRS, and the US collects data under FATCA. Whether you must declare the account depends on your tax residency.
What balance do I need to keep?
There is no single rule: retail accounts often have no minimum, while private banking starts in the six figures. We confirm the current requirement with the specific bank before applying.
