Personal accounts: Liechtenstein

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Liechtenstein banks work with wealthy private clients and check them more strictly than mass-market banks: they care about the source of wealth, tax residence and the purpose of the account. An account is usually opened for wealth management or together with a family structure: a Liechtenstein trust or foundation.

Deposit guarantee and minimum amounts

Deposits in Liechtenstein banks are protected by the deposit guarantee and investor compensation foundation: up to CHF 100,000 per depositor per bank, about $120,400 at the rate of 5 October 2026 ($1 = CHF 0.831). All of a client's deposits at one bank are added together, and for a joint account the limit applies to each owner. Money from a home sale and social payments is temporarily protected up to CHF 750,000, about $902,600, and investors in securities are compensated up to CHF 30,000, about $36,200, according to a Liechtenstein bank's depositor information sheet.

Banks set their own minimum deposits: for private clients they usually start at CHF 100,000 (about $120,400) and reach CHF 1 million (about $1.2 million) at banks for large wealth. For EU residents some banks set a lower threshold.

Currency and tax information exchange

Liechtenstein is part of the European Economic Area and uses the Swiss franc, and accounts are usually multi-currency. Liechtenstein banks take part in the automatic exchange of tax information: details of non-resident clients' accounts go to the countries where they are tax resident. So before opening the account we check how your income and capital will look to the tax authority of the country where you live.

What the bank will ask

  • a passport and proof of address;
  • tax residence details;
  • source of wealth: sale of a business, dividends, inheritance, investments;
  • the purpose of the account, planned amounts and investment goals.

How opening works

  1. Profile and amount review.
  2. Choosing the bank and, if needed, a family structure: a Liechtenstein trust.
  3. The source of funds file.
  4. The bank's review and a meeting with the banker.
  5. Account opening and transfer of funds.

What we do

Murblz specialists assess whether Liechtenstein fits your amount and task, prepare the source of wealth documents and handle the correspondence with the bank until it decides. The quote is fixed in writing.

Who gets refused

A bank will refuse if the source of funds cannot be documented, if the client or their money is linked to sanctions restrictions, or if the purpose of the account does not match the expected payments. We check whether a case involving Russian citizens can proceed before any documents are prepared.
