Personal accounts: Malta

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Malta is an EU and euro area member, and its banks are supervised by the Malta Financial Services Authority. People open a personal account here when moving to Malta on a residence permit or citizenship programme, buying property, earning income in euros or keeping savings in a European bank. Maltese banks review new clients strictly, especially non-EU residents, so preparation decides almost everything.

Who can open an account in Malta

Your situationWhat you can openWhat the decision depends on
Lawfully living in Malta or another EU countrya statutory basic account or a regular accountyou are entitled to a basic account if you have no other account in Malta
Moving to Malta on a residence permita regular accountresidence documents, address, source of funds
Living outside the EUa regular account or private bankingbank policy only: ties to Malta, amount, citizenship

A basic account includes deposits, cash withdrawals in Malta and other EU countries, transfers and card payments. The bank provides it free of charge or for a reasonable fee, regardless of the number of transactions. Without lawful residence in the EU there is no right to such an account and the bank decides on its own.

We will calculate online the cost of opening a personal account and maintaining it for a year.

What a Maltese bank checks

  • Passport and proof of address; for Malta residents the local ID card.
  • Ties to Malta: residence permit, work, home, business. Without them non-residents are refused most often.
  • Source of funds and source of wealth with documents.
  • Tax residence: the bank reports accounts of foreigners to the tax authority of their country.
  • Expected turnover and payment countries.

Timeline and process

StageWhat happensTime
1. Profile reviewwe choose a bank for your citizenship, amount and ties to Malta1-3 days
2. Document filepassport, address, a reference letter from your bank, evidence of source of funds and ties to Malta1-2 weeks
3. Application and reviewthe bank reviews the client and may ask more questions or invite you to a meeting2-6 weeks
4. Openingaccount details, card and online banking accessup to 2 weeks

The reference letter usually has to confirm that you have been a client of your bank for at least two years with a satisfactory relationship. Documents in other languages are translated into English.

Why Maltese banks refuse

  • No ties to Malta: no residence permit, home, work or business.
  • The source of funds is not documented or explained only in general terms.
  • An incomplete file: no reference letter or recent proof of address.
  • Citizenship or payment countries on a higher-risk list.
  • Past debts or bankruptcy.

Banks often do not explain a refusal, and reapplying to the same bank rarely changes the outcome. So we prepare the file to answer the typical review questions the first time.

Deposit protection

The Depositor Compensation Scheme protects up to EUR 100,000, about $112,100, per person at each bank, paid within seven business days. If the account recently received money from a home sale or another life event, additional compensation of up to EUR 500,000, about $560,200, may be available.

Tax on interest

For Malta residents the bank withholds a final 15% tax on interest, which then does not need to be declared on the tax return. Interest paid to non-residents is not taxed in Malta and is paid gross once the required declaration is given to the bank. If you are tax resident in Malta but not domiciled there, foreign income is taxed when it is remitted to Malta, so which money goes into which account should be decided before opening.

How we help

We assess your chances from your profile, choose a bank that works with your citizenship and goal, prepare the file on source of funds and ties to Malta, and handle the application and bank correspondence until a decision. If you are relocating, we tie the account opening to your residence permit and lease so the bank sees the full picture.

FAQ

Can a non-resident open an account in Malta?
Yes, but they have no right to one: the bank decides and usually expects ties to Malta - a residence permit, home, work or business. People lawfully living in the EU with no other Maltese account are entitled to a basic account.
Do I need an address or residence permit in Malta?
For an EU resident lawful residence anywhere in the union is enough. For non-EU residents a Maltese address and residence permit greatly improve the chances; without them many banks refuse.
Do I need to travel to Malta?
It depends on the bank: some verify identity remotely, others ask for a visit. We confirm the format before the application.
Is money in a Maltese account protected?
Yes, up to EUR 100,000, about $112,100, per person at each bank, paid within seven business days. Money from a home sale and other life events can be covered up to an additional EUR 500,000.
Is deposit interest taxed in Malta?
For Malta residents the bank withholds a final 15% tax. Interest paid to non-residents is not taxed in Malta and is paid gross.
Does Malta exchange account information?
Yes. The bank establishes the client's tax residence and reports accounts of foreigners to the tax authority of their country.
