Personal accounts: Moldova

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

A personal account in Moldova is opened by foreigners moving here on a residence permit, working or studying, by owners of Moldovan companies and IT park residents, and by people keeping part of their savings in an EU candidate country with clear banking rules. Banks are supervised by the National Bank of Moldova, and the currency is the Moldovan leu, but accounts are also opened in euro and dollars. Many banks serve clients in Romanian, Russian and English.

What the bank checks

  • Passport, for residents an ID card or residence permit with a personal number.
  • Address in Moldova or in the country of residence.
  • Purpose of the account: salary, family expenses, dividends from a Moldovan company, savings.
  • Source of funds: employment contract, statements, documents on the sale of a business or assets.
  • Tax residence: Moldovan banks ask where you pay tax and share information under international agreements.

Instant payments and euro transfers

Since 12 March 2024 Moldova has had National Bank instant payments: money reaches an account at any Moldovan bank within seconds, and the recipient can be identified by phone number. Transfers up to 10,000 lei a month are free, and above that the fee is no more than 5 lei per transfer. Since 6 October 2025 Moldova has been part of the Single Euro Payments Area, so euro transfers between Moldova and the EU are fast and almost free.

How the opening works

  1. Assessment of your status and choice of a bank for currencies, transfers and service level.
  2. Document pack: passport or ID, address, purpose of the account, source of funds.
  3. Branch visit or video verification, signing the agreement.
  4. Card, online banking and instant payments set up.

For residents with documents the account is often opened on the day of the visit. For non-residents the review takes from a few days to two or three weeks.

Who gets refused

The bank will refuse if the client has no link to Moldova and no clear purpose for the account, if the source of money cannot be proven with documents, or if the client or their money is linked to sanctions. We check whether the bank works with Russian citizens before preparing documents.

What we do
