Banks in Nauru after 2025

For many years Nauru had one bank, an Australian bank's agency, which stopped operating on 8 August 2025. Since then an agency of another major Australian bank has served the island's residents. Payments are in Australian dollars. Island accounts are opened mainly for residents; foreigners without a link to Nauru usually bank in Australia or elsewhere.

Many look at Nauru because of its citizenship by contribution program: from $90,000 for the main applicant, processed in about 3-4 months. FAQ

Can a non resident open a personal account in Nauru?
In practice no. Banking services on the island are limited and aimed at residents and people working there, and there is no remote onboarding for foreigners. Nauru is not a jurisdiction for international personal banking.
What currency is used and how does cash work there?
The Australian dollar is in circulation and the economy is largely cash-based. Card and ATM infrastructure is limited and international transfers rely on a narrow set of correspondents. Routing personal finances through Nauru makes little sense.
Can I open an account online?
No. There is no remote account opening in Nauru for non residents, and any offer to arrange one without you being there should be treated as a fraud signal. Verify any such scheme before sending money.
What should I do if I need an account in the region?
Pick the country that matches your real life and income - where you live, work, pay taxes and can prove an address.
