What you can get in Barbados
Barbados at a glance
Barbados is the easternmost island of the Caribbean, with about 280,000 residents. The capital is Bridgetown, the language is English and the legal system is based on English common law. Since November 2021 Barbados has been a republic within the Commonwealth. The Barbados dollar is pegged to the US dollar at 2 to 1, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere.
The economy rests on tourism, international business and financial services, rum and sugar. The island is considered one of the most stable and safe in the Caribbean, with good roads, schools and connectivity.
Who the move suits
- remote workers and freelancers with foreign income from $50,000 a year;
- families who want to spend a year or two by the sea in an English-speaking country;
- retirees with foreign income;
- buyers of villas and flats on the west and south coasts;
- company owners who need a Caribbean jurisdiction with low corporate tax.
It is harder for those who want to work in the local market: work permits are hard to get and salaries are lower than in Europe.
Where to live on the island
- The west coast - Holetown and Speightstown, the calm Caribbean Sea, villas and the highest prices.
- The south coast - St Lawrence Gap, Rockley and Oistins, cheaper, with more cafés, bars and remote workers.
- Bridgetown and around - offices, banks and government agencies, convenient for business.
- The east coast - Bathsheba and the Atlantic with strong waves, beautiful but far from shops and schools.
Entry rules
Whether you need a visa for a short trip depends on your passport; citizens of Russia, for example, do not. The length of stay is set on arrival, and border officers ask for a return ticket, accommodation and travel funds. Barbados has direct flights to London, New York, Miami and Toronto; a connection in London is usually the most convenient, and a connection in the US requires a US visa.
The first 30 days on the island
- Housing. For the first weeks people take a short-term rental on the south coast and sign a long lease after viewing in person: the price depends heavily on proximity to the beach.
- Status. The remote work permit application is filed online before arrival or from the island. The decision usually comes in about 7 working days, and the fee is paid within 28 days of approval.
- Insurance. International health insurance for the first 12 months is required for every family member: without it the permit is not granted.
- Account. The bank asks for proof of address on the island, a reference from your current bank and income documents, so people rely on foreign cards for the first weeks.
- Car and school. Almost everyone needs a car, and places at private and international schools are booked in advance.
Budget for the first 3 months
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Rent for a one-bedroom flat in the centre for 3 months | $2,400-3,600 |
| Utilities and internet for 3 months | ~$840 |
| Remote work permit fee | $2,000 for one person, $3,000 for a family |
| Rental deposit, insurance, groceries, car | at market rates |
Housing is cheapest in the less expensive districts, from $380 a month, while prices on the west coast are many times higher. One person needs from $5,200 for three months for rent, utilities and the fee; a family needs more. A manager will do the full calculation for your family in the chat.
Residence options
- The remote work permit for 12 months with renewal: income from $50,000 a year, a fee of $2,000 for one person or $3,000 for a family, a decision usually in about 7 working days. Working for local employers is not allowed.
- A work permit is arranged by a local employer.
- Residence on other grounds, for example for retirees and wealthy people with foreign income, is considered case by case.
- Buying property does not by itself grant residence.
Time on the remote work permit does not lead to permanent residence. For those who want to stay on the island long term, we choose the right basis in advance.
We file the remote work permit for you and your family, prepare the renewal documents and find housing.
Taxes
The budget of 16 March 2026 cut income tax to 11.5% on the first $25,000 of taxable income and 27.5% above, after a personal allowance of $13,000. The allowance for retirees rose to $38,000. A resident without Barbados domicile pays tax on foreign income only if it is remitted to the island. Remote work permit holders pay no Barbados income tax on remote income. Corporate tax is 9%, 5.5% for small businesses, VAT is 17.5%, and there are no capital gains or inheritance taxes. More in taxes in Barbados.
Cost of living
| Item, per month | Amount |
|---|---|
| One-bedroom flat in the centre | $770-1,200 |
| One-bedroom flat in a cheaper district | from $380 |
| Utilities for an 85 m² flat | ~$200 |
| Home internet | ~$85 |
| Average salary after tax | ~$1,600-2,000 |
Prices depend heavily on proximity to the beach: villas on the west coast cost many times more, and a square metre of a flat in the centre is about $3,500. Groceries are mostly imported and expensive, and almost everyone needs a car. Districts and prices in more detail are in our guide to Bridgetown.
Property for foreigners
There are no nationality restrictions: a foreigner can buy a house, villa, flat or plot outright. The key condition is approval from the Central Bank of Barbados under exchange control rules, granted if the buyer brings in foreign currency for the full amount. The same document later allows the sale proceeds to be repatriated. On sale a 2.5% transfer tax applies above $75,000 plus 1% stamp duty, usually both paid by the seller, and annual land tax is up to 1% of value. We find the property, check the documents and close the deal.
Banks and business
Accounts are opened by local banks supervised by the Central Bank of Barbados. A non-resident can open an account if there is a clear link to the island: housing, a remote work permit, local expenses. The bank asks for a passport and a second ID, proof of address on the island and in your country of residence, a reference from your current bank, income documents and a tax number. So many remote workers rely on foreign cards at first.
- Deposits are insured up to $13,000 per depositor per bank.
- Exchange control applies: money brought in for large purchases is registered so it can later be taken out lawfully, and transfers abroad go through the Central Bank's system.
- You become tax resident after spending more than 182 days on the island in a tax year.
Companies pay 9% corporate tax, and regimes for international business exist. We help open a personal or business account.
Climate, healthcare, schools
The climate is tropical at 26-31°C all year, with a dry season from December to May. Hurricane season runs from June to November, but the island lies east of the main track and is hit less often than its neighbours. The main public hospital is in Bridgetown, there are private clinics, and complex cases are flown to the US. Public schools follow the British system, and there are private international schools.
