Barbados on the world map

Barbados grants a 12-month permit to people working remotely for companies and clients outside the island. You must show you will earn at least $50,000 over the year, arrange health insurance and pay a fee: $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a family. Holders do not pay Barbados income tax on their remote earnings.

Who the permit suits

  • Remote employees of companies registered outside Barbados.
  • Freelancers and business owners with clients abroad.
  • Income over 12 months must be at least $50,000, about $4,167 a month.

Working for companies and clients in Barbados itself is not allowed on this permit. It suits those who want to spend a year or more on the island without changing their job or tax residence.

The fee is non-refundable and paid after approval, within 28 days. One $3,000 fee covers a family, but insurance is needed for each member.

The $2,000 fee is paid only after approval

The rules do not prevent applying for the Barbados remote work visa on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fee: an employer letter without an income figure does not prove $50,000 a year, the policy does not cover the whole first year, and family documents arrive without translation. Murblz support removes these risks: we gather proof of remote work and income, check the insurance and family papers before filing, remind you to pay the fee within 28 days of approval and prepare a new application before the 12 months run out. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first filing.

The support fee depends on your family and how your income is proven; a manager will calculate it in the chat.

Who is refused

  • expected 12-month income below $50,000;
  • the employer or clients are in Barbados;
  • no health insurance for the first 12 months;
  • family relationships not documented;
  • the fee not paid within 28 days of approval: the approval lapses.

Family

A spouse and children apply with the main applicant; the family fee is $3,000. Each needs insurance, and children need birth certificates. School-age children can attend private and international schools on the island, best booked in advance.

Reapplying after 12 months

The permit lasts 12 months. To stay longer, reapply at the end with new income and insurance documents and pay the fee again. Time on this permit does not lead to permanent residence, so a long-term life on the island needs other grounds.

Taxes

Permit holders pay no Barbados income tax on remote earnings and make no local social security contributions. Taxes in the country where you remain tax resident still apply, so before moving we check its rules on long absences.

What to consider before moving

  • Hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June to November: choose housing and insurance accordingly.
  • Housing. Rent on the island is expensive, especially on the west coast; sign a lease for the whole term.
  • Internet. Areas popular with remote workers have good connections, but check the speed at a specific home before signing.
  • Money. The island's currency is the Barbados dollar, pegged to the US dollar at 2 to 1.

Risks and what may change

  • Programme terms are set by the island's government; fees and the threshold may be revised.
  • Taxes at home. The exemption applies only in Barbados; your country of residence may tax the income.
  • Year by year. The permit is not renewed automatically; each time a new application is needed.
  • Expensive living. Housing and living costs are higher than in many regional countries.
