Colombia issues a digital nomad visa to self-employed workers and business owners whose income comes from outside the country.

Who qualifies for the visa

The visa is open to remote employees of foreign companies, self-employed professionals and owners of foreign businesses. The key condition is that income must come from outside Colombia.

Validity and income

The visa is issued for up to 2 years. The minimum income is 3 Colombian minimum monthly wages (SMMLV): in 2026 that is COP 5,252,715 a month, about $1,610. The threshold follows the minimum wage and changes every January - we confirm the exact amount for your application date during the consultation.

Documents

  • Passport with free pages and a photo.
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months showing at least 3 minimum wages.
  • Proof of remote work: employer letter, client contracts or company documents.
  • Health insurance covering Colombia for the whole stay: accidents, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalisation, death and repatriation.
  • A motivation letter about your work.
  • Foreign-language documents translated into Spanish.

How the process works

  1. Online application on the Foreign Ministry portal and payment of the study fee.
  2. Decision and payment of the issuance fee; fees depend on nationality.
  3. Registration. Within 15 days of entry or visa issue, register with Migración Colombia and obtain a foreigner ID card (cédula de extranjería).
  4. Life in the country. Bank account, lease and a tax number if needed.

A spouse and children can get dependant visas.

Taxes

You become Colombian tax resident after 183 days in the country within any 365 consecutive days. Residents pay tax on worldwide income at 0-39%, non-residents only on Colombian income. If you plan to stay more than six months, plan your taxes in advance. More on the Colombia taxes page.
