Mexico on the world map

Mexico has no separate digital nomad visa: remote workers obtain temporary residence on economic solvency grounds. It is valid for 1 to 4 years, lets you live in the country and work for foreign clients, and after 4 years leads to permanent residence.

What it really is

Mexico has no separate visa for remote work. Remote employees and freelancers obtain temporary residence on economic solvency grounds by showing stable income or savings. The status is granted for 1 to 4 years, and after 4 years you can move to permanent residence. You apply at a Mexican consulate abroad and, after entry, exchange the visa for a resident card.

Income requirements in 2026

Thresholds are calculated from Mexico's unit of account, 117.31 pesos a day in 2026, and each consulate converts them to dollars in its own way. For example, the San Diego consulate requires income of $4,510 a month over the last 6 months or an average balance of $75,950 over 12 months, while the Las Vegas consulate requires $4,630 and $78,025. About $1,400-1,500 a month is added per family member. So we check the amounts for your filing country before booking.

Remote work and taxes

Working for a foreign employer or clients while in Mexico on temporary residence is possible in practice, while work for Mexican companies requires a separate permit. Mexican tax residence depends on where your home and centre of vital interests are, not on the number of days. A resident pays tax on worldwide income on a scale up to 35%, and there is no special regime for nomads. Mexico has a double tax treaty with Russia, so we calculate taxes in both countries in advance. If you keep living between two homes, it is important to decide in advance where your centre of vital interests will be, otherwise both countries may treat you as their resident.

We will check online whether your income is enough with your family included and calculate the visa cost for each member.

Living costs for one person excluding rent are about $600 a month, for a family of four about $2,000. Pesos are converted at about 18.3 pesos per dollar and rounded up.

The consular fee is about $56, but every consulate counts income its own way

The law does not stop you from applying on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fee: bank statements that fall short of the chosen consulate's threshold, booking at the wrong consulate, missing the 30-day window to exchange the visa for a resident card after entry, a wrongly completed migration form. We pick a consulate with clear requirements, calculate income by its rules, prepare statements and translations and handle the visa-to-card exchange in Mexico. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first application.

Support depends on the consulate and family size - a manager will calculate it in the chat.

Documents

  • A passport valid for the whole visa term and the visa application form.
  • Bank statements for 6 months with monthly income above the threshold, or for 12 months with an average balance above the threshold, split by month, with a bank letter.
  • Proof of remote work: an employment contract, an employer letter or client contracts.
  • For family, marriage and children's birth certificates, usually apostilled by the issuing country.

Step by step and timelines

  1. Choosing a consulate and checking statements against its thresholds, about a week.
  2. Collecting statements, bank letters and proof of work, 2-4 weeks.
  3. The consulate interview; at some consulates the decision comes in 1 to 10 business days.
  4. Entry to Mexico on the resident visa.
  5. Exchanging the visa for a card at the National Migration Institute within 30 days of entry.
  6. Renewing the card until 4 years are reached in total, then permanent residence.

Why applications are refused

  • Income below the consulate's threshold in at least one month.
  • Irregular payments or a source not proven by a contract or employer letter.
  • Statements without a bank letter or not split by month.
  • The 30-day deadline for exchanging the visa for a card was missed.
  • Trying to obtain status inside the country after entering as a tourist.

Before booking the consulate we check every month of statements, match amounts against contracts and prepare the bank letter in the required format.

Where to live remotely

Remote workers most often choose Mexico City with its Roma and Condesa districts, Guadalajara, Mérida, Oaxaca and Playa del Carmen on the Caribbean coast. Large cities have many coworking spaces and stable internet, while in small resort towns connectivity is worth checking before renting. Safety varies noticeably between states, so we choose the area with the current situation in mind.

Who it suits and who it does not

The status suits remote specialists earning from $4,500 a month, freelancers with steady foreign clients and families who want to live in Mexico for years and obtain permanent status. It does not suit those whose income is below the threshold or varies sharply from month to month, or those who want to join a Mexican company without a work permit.

Family

A spouse and children receive temporary residence together with the main applicant as family members. About $1,400-1,500 a month per person is added to the income or balance threshold, and original marriage and birth certificates are added to the documents. If one spouse already has residence, the others can apply on family grounds even inside the country.

Life with a resident card

Together with the card you receive a unique national population registry code, which banks, clinics, schools and phone operators ask for. Contracts, invoices and dealing with the tax authority require a separate tax number. With a resident card you can open a Mexican bank account, get a local driving licence and rent long-term without extra questions.

Bank and transfers

A Mexican bank account is opened after receiving the resident card and tax number. It is convenient to receive a salary from a foreign employer into an account in your home country and convert to pesos as needed, but a local account is needed for rent, utilities and taxes. The bank may ask you to explain large incoming payments, so we keep contracts with the employer and clients to hand.

Healthcare

Most remote workers use private clinics and international insurance covering treatment in Mexico. Residents can voluntarily join the state health insurance system, but queues there are longer, so it is usually seen as a supplement. The cost of private insurance depends on age and coverage, and we calculate it together with the moving budget. For families with children it is important to find a paediatrician and a clinic near home in advance, especially in smaller towns.

Where to start

Send us in the chat statements for the last 6 or 12 months, your contract with the employer or clients and your family composition. We will choose a consulate where your amounts pass the threshold more reliably, check every month of statements and draw up a document list. If your income is below the threshold for now, we suggest Colombia, Costa Rica or Panama as a first step.

Renewal and permanent status

The first temporary resident card is usually issued for a year, then renewed at the National Migration Institute for 1 to 3 years until 4 years are reached in total. Renewal must be filed before the card expires, otherwise the status has to be obtained again through a consulate. After 4 years you can move to permanent residence, and after 5 years of residence apply for citizenship with an exam on Spanish and Mexican history.

Translations and apostille

Many consulates accept bank statements in English, but marriage and birth certificates for family members usually need an apostille from the issuing country. When filing in Mexico, for example for a renewal or change of basis, documents in other languages are translated into Spanish by an official translator. We draw up the list of translations for the specific consulate so you do not pay for unnecessary ones.

Neighbouring countries have lower thresholds, but Mexico gives full residence with a path to permanent status. More on the general rules on the Mexico residence page.

What changes in 2026

From 1 January 2026 resident card fees went up, and consulates updated income thresholds following the unit of account. The procedure itself is unchanged: a visa at the consulate, exchange for a card within 30 days and a path to permanent status after 4 years. A specific consulate's thresholds may also be updated during the year, so we check them before each booking.

What we do

Murblz specialists choose a consulate with suitable thresholds, check statements month by month, prepare documents and bank letters, and support the interview, the visa-to-card exchange and renewals. If your income is below the threshold for now, we suggest a country with a nomad visa. A consultant will calculate the cost in the chat, and we fix the estimate in writing before work starts so there are no surprises.
