Brazil digital nomad visa in 2026
For people who work remotely for a foreign company or clients abroad: live in Brazil for up to a year, renewable for the same period. Income from $1,500 a month or $18,000 in the bank, from abroad only.

Brazil has issued a digital nomad visa since September 2021 under Resolution No. 45 of the National Immigration Council. It is for foreigners who work remotely for an employer or clients outside Brazil: you can live in the country for up to a year and then renew for the same period. You cannot work for Brazilian companies on this visa, and the income must come only from abroad.
Who the Brazil digital nomad visa suits
The visa is designed for people whose work is not tied to a place and whose employer or client is outside Brazil.
- Employees of a foreign company with the right to work remotely.
- Contractors working for foreign companies: developers, designers, consultants, writers.
- Not suitable if you want to work for a Brazilian company or earn from Brazilian clients: that needs a work visa.
The visa lets you live in Brazil and, after registration, get a foreign national card and a tax number and open a bank account. It is not permanent residence: you can renew it for the same period, and staying longer requires another basis.
Income requirement: $1,500 a month or $18,000 in the bank
The financial condition is one of two:
- income of at least $1,500 a month from a foreign source, proven by a contract and statements;
- or $18,000 in a checking or savings account.
Income must come from a foreign payer. Money from Brazilian companies or clients does not count, and working for a Brazilian business on this visa is not allowed.
The threshold is set in US dollars and is not indexed automatically, but the consulate may ask for more statements if your income is irregular.
We will check online whether your income is enough with your family included and calculate the visa cost for each member.
How much does the Brazil digital nomad visa cost in 2026
Each Brazilian consulate sets its own consular fee, so the amount depends on where you apply.
| Payment | Amount |
|---|---|
| Consular fee, New York consulate | $290 |
| Consular fee, embassy in Bahrain | ~$310 |
| Foreign national card on Federal Police registration | ~$45, after arrival |
| Health insurance valid in Brazil | insurer's rate |
| Police certificate, translations, certifications | as incurred, depends on the issuing country |
For one adult, government payments start from $290. The calculation online shows the fee at your consulate, insurance and translations for the whole family.
Income from $1,500 a month, from abroad only
The law does not prevent applying for the Brazil digital nomad visa on your own. But mistakes cost more than the consular fee: statements do not show $1,500 a month or $18,000 in the account, income comes from a Brazilian client, police certificates and translations fail the consulate check, and Federal Police registration slips past 90 days after arrival. Murblz support removes these risks: we gather proof of income, check documents against your consulate requirements, handle the police appointment and the extension, and work out tax residency in advance. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first filing.
The support fee depends on your consulate and family; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
What documents you need for the nomad visa
The list follows the requirements of consulates of Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
- a passport with a blank visa page;
- the online visa application and its printed receipt;
- a 2x2 inch photo on a white background;
- a police clearance certificate issued no more than 3 months before filing;
- a copy of your birth certificate;
- health insurance valid in Brazil;
- an employment or service contract with a foreign company;
- a letter from the employer on letterhead or your own statement that the work is done remotely;
- proof of $1,500 a month in income or $18,000 in the bank;
- the consular fee payment receipt;
- if you live outside your country of citizenship, a copy of your residence permit or visa there.
Consulates set their own apostille and Portuguese translation requirements: we check them for your consulate before filing so you do not have to redo the police certificate, which expires quickly.
How to get the nomad visa: steps and timelines
| Step | What happens | How long |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Income and contract check | we confirm the income is foreign and the contract fits | 1-2 weeks |
| 2. Documents | police certificate, insurance, statements, translations | 2-6 weeks; the certificate is valid for 3 months |
| 3. Application and fee | online form, fee payment, consulate appointment | per the consulate's appointments |
| 4. Consulate decision | review of the file | no official deadline |
| 5. Arrival and registration | Federal Police registration, foreign national card, tax number | within 90 days of arrival |
| 6. Renewal | resubmission of documents before expiry | a few weeks before the year ends |
Do not be late with registration: a fine applies, and without the foreign national card you cannot open a bank account or get a tax number.
After arrival: registration, tax number, bank and healthcare
- Federal Police registration within 90 days of arrival. You receive a foreign national card, the main document for life in the country; the government fee for the card is about $45.
- Tax number. Without it you cannot open an account, sign a lease or connect a phone in Brazil. The number is issued by Brazil's tax authority.
- Bank account. With the foreign national card and the tax number you open an account at a Brazilian bank; a salary from abroad arrives as an international transfer.
- Healthcare. Brazil's public health system is free for everyone in the country, but insurance is mandatory for the visa and gives access to private clinics without queues.
Russian citizens enter Brazil visa-free for up to 90 days within 180 days, but the nomad visa itself is issued by a Brazilian consulate before the trip.
Who gets refused the nomad visa
- Income comes from Brazilian companies or clients rather than from abroad.
- Income is below $1,500 a month and savings below $18,000.
- The police certificate is older than 3 months or shows records.
- There is no insurance valid in Brazil.
- The contract does not prove remote work for a foreign company.
- Documents contradict each other: amounts in the contract and statements do not match.
Digital nomad taxes in Brazil
A temporary visa holder without a Brazilian employment contract becomes a Brazilian tax resident on reaching 184 days in the country within 12 months, in one stretch or several. From then on Brazil taxes worldwide income on a 0-27.5% scale, and in 2026 income up to BRL 5,000 a month is tax-free. Individuals' foreign investment income is taxed at 15%.
Brazil has no special regime for digital nomads or relocating professionals. So decide before moving where you will be resident and how tax on a foreign salary will be paid. Rates, examples and how to exit residency are on our Brazil taxes page.
Risks and what may change
- The visa conditions are set by a National Immigration Council resolution, which can be amended along with the income thresholds.
- Consular fees change and differ between countries.
- The visa renews for the same period but does not turn into permanent residence by itself.
- After 183 days in the country, tax residency arises with tax due on worldwide income.
The Brazil nomad visa or a neighbour's: a comparison
| Country | Term | Income requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Brazil | up to 1 year, renewable for the same period | from $1,500 a month from abroad or $18,000 in the bank |
| Colombia | up to 2 years | 3 Colombian minimum monthly wages |
| Uruguay | 180 days plus one 180-day extension | no threshold set, a declaration of means is enough |
| Argentina | 6 months, renewable | no threshold set |
Brazil asks for proof of income but gives a full year in the country straight away, with a foreign national card, a tax number and a bank account. Uruguay and Argentina are easier to enter but give a shorter term. Colombia gives the longest term at a comparable income threshold.
Consider taxes too: in Brazil residency starts on day 184 and covers worldwide income, while Uruguay offers new residents a tax holiday on foreign passive income.
Alternatives to the Brazil nomad visa
- Brazil residence: other grounds for a long stay.
- Giving birth in Brazil: the child is a citizen, parents get residence and a shorter path to a passport.
- Uruguay nomad visa: a neighbour with a tax holiday for new residents.
- Argentina nomad visa: no minimum income amount.
A manager in the chat will tell you which option works better given taxes and family.
