Which digital nomad visa to choose

A nomad visa is the rare case where a government asks about your salary and is pleased with the answer. Five questions show where your laptop is welcome to stay, and where it is still only a holiday.

The finder needs JavaScript. All digital nomad visas are in the nomad visa section.

What a digital nomad visa is

A digital nomad visa lets you live in a country while working remotely for an employer or clients outside it. The state gains a tenant and a shopper with a foreign salary, and you get legal status for a year or two instead of 90 tourist days.

Working for a local employer on this status is almost never allowed. The income has to come from abroad, and the consulate checks it against statements and contracts, not your word.

How much income you need for a digital nomad visa

The choice starts with three numbers rather than a country: monthly income, family size and how many years you are ready to stay put. The finder at the top of the page weighs them in a minute.

The threshold is only the first filter. Italy wants a degree and six months of remote work, Czechia takes citizens of just 13 countries, and Croatia gives 18 months at most, extension included. Salary opens the door; paperwork decides the rest.

Iceland abolished its remote work visa in May 2026, so it is not in the finder.

Digital nomad visas for Russian citizens

Four of the 30 programmes are closed to Russian citizens. Estonia does not issue them visas, Malta does not accept applications from Russian and Belarusian citizens, and Czechia and Japan only take citizens on their own lists. The other 26 do not exclude Russian citizenship.

If Russian is not your only citizenship, we check before filing whether the programme counts all your passports: Czechia, for example, also turns away Russians who hold a US passport. The nomad visa matcher picks the one of the 26 open programmes that fits your income.

A Russian employer is a separate story. Since 2024 the salary of a remote employee of a Russian company is taxed in Russia at 13-15% wherever the employee lives. Spain or Portugal may tax the same salary again, and Russia suspended its tax treaties with them in 2023 by Decree No. 585.

Run the double-tax numbers before the move, not after the first tax return. Ask an expert how it works in your country.

Which digital nomad visas lead to permanent residency

Most nomad visas are a dead end: a year or two by the sea, then back to the start of the queue. The years count towards permanent residency in Spain, Portugal and Italy after 5 years, in Mexico after 4 years of temporary residence and in Ecuador after 21 months.

In Croatia, Costa Rica, Uruguay and the UAE the nomad status does not lead to permanent residency. Staying on means switching to other grounds: not a disaster, just a second set of documents.

How much a digital nomad visa costs

Government fees for the whole route to the first status run from zero to $2,000 per person. It is free in Georgia, where no visa is needed, and in Mauritius. The Caribbean is the priciest: Barbados charges $2,000. The figure for each country is in the table above.

Translations, apostilles, insurance and mistakes cost more than the fees. The law does not stop you from applying on your own, but a statement for the wrong period or income that drops below the threshold after currency conversion, and the consulate refuses and keeps the fee.

Murblz support removes these risks: we check your income and documents before filing and see the application through to a decision. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first application. A manager will calculate the support fee in the chat.

FAQ

What is a digital nomad visa?
Permission to live in a country while working remotely for an employer or clients outside it. It is usually issued for one or two years, renewable, and requires proven income from abroad.
Which digital nomad visa is the easiest to get?
On a modest income, Uruguay and Argentina: neither sets a fixed threshold. Georgia needs no visa at all, and Russian citizens can stay a year visa-free. Italy has the lowest threshold in Europe, about $2,620 a month, but asks for a degree.
Which countries give digital nomad visas to Russian citizens?
26 of the 30 programmes in our table. Estonia, Malta, Czechia and Japan are closed. Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Thailand, the UAE and Latin American countries accept Russian citizens on general terms.
How much do I need to earn for a digital nomad visa?
The minimum is $1,446 a month in Ecuador, the maximum about $5,790 in Romania. In Europe the threshold is usually $3,000-4,500. Many thresholds are pegged to local minimum or average wages and change every year.
Which digital nomad visas lead to permanent residency?
Spain, Portugal and Italy count the years towards permanent residency after 5 years, Mexico after 4 and Ecuador after 21 months. In Croatia, Costa Rica, Uruguay and the UAE the nomad status does not lead to permanent residency.
Do digital nomads pay tax?
It depends on the country. Croatia, Costa Rica, Panama, Malaysia and the UAE do not tax a nomad's foreign income. In Spain, Portugal, Greece and Cyprus you become tax resident after 183 days in a year and pay local rates.
Can my family come with me?
Almost everywhere, but the threshold rises. Spain adds 75% of the minimum wage for a spouse, Greece and Cyprus add 20% of the threshold, and Costa Rica asks $4,000 for a family. In Uruguay and Hungary family members are not included.
Can I work for a Russian company on a nomad visa?
The programmes in our table do not ban a Russian employer outright. But a remote employee's salary from a Russian company is taxed in Russia at 13-15%, and the country you live in may tax it again.

Threshold cleared, now the paperwork

A manager will check your income, family and taxes against the rules of the chosen country and tell you what to file so the consulate does not send the file back.
