Digital nomad visa for Mauritius
The Premium Visa lets you live in Mauritius from six months up to a year, renewable, and work remotely for foreign clients. We cover requirements, documents, taxes and how to stay longer.

The Mauritius Premium Visa is issued by the Economic Development Board of Mauritius to people who want to spend more than 180 days a year on the island: remote workers, freelancers, retirees and families. You may not enter the local labour market, and your main income must come from abroad. The application is online and free.
Who the Premium Visa suits
The visa is for people who want to spend more than 180 days in a calendar year in Mauritius: long-stay tourists, retirees and people working remotely for companies and clients abroad. If you plan to spend less than 180 days a year on the island, the tourist visa granted on arrival is enough.
- You may not enter the Mauritian labour market: work for local employers or serve local clients.
- Your main place of business and source of income must be outside Mauritius.
- You need long-stay plans: housing, a return ticket, health and travel insurance.
- Nationality. Nationals of listed countries, including Russia, apply before entry; others enter as tourists and apply from the island.
How much the Mauritius Premium Visa costs in 2026
The visa itself is free: the Economic Development Board charges neither a visa fee nor a processing fee. Costs come from what the application requires:
- health and travel insurance for the whole stay;
- housing for the whole stay: a lease, hotel booking or invitation;
- tickets with a return more than 6 months later;
- translation of documents into English or French if they are in another language;
- our support, if you hand preparation and filing to us.
Beyond costs, you must show income: from $1,500 a month per adult and from $500 a month per child. For a family the total threshold depends on its make-up; a manager calculates it in the chat.
We will check online whether your income is enough with your family included and calculate the visa cost for each member.
Documents for the Premium Visa
- the application completed on the portal;
- the passport bio page;
- a passport-size photo, on first application;
- copies of air tickets, including a return more than 6 months later;
- health and travel insurance for the whole stay;
- proof of housing: a hotel booking, lease or invitation with the host's address and ID;
- bank statements for the last 3 months;
- proof of monthly income: an employment contract or income letter;
- for a spouse, a marriage certificate; for children, birth certificates in English or French, and the other parent's consent if a child travels with one parent.
On renewal the photo and marriage and birth documents are not uploaded again; everything else must be recent.
How the visa term is counted
- Applying from abroad. The visa is issued for a year if all documents are uploaded. You must enter within 6 months, and the year counts from the date of arrival in Mauritius.
- Applying on the island. If you are already in Mauritius on a tourist visa, the Premium Visa term is aligned with your insurance and return ticket, both of which must cover more than 6 months.
- Travel. The visa is multiple-entry: you can leave and return while it is valid.
What to carry on arrival
Mauritian border officers check the same documents as at application, so keep them at hand: the e-visa, printed or on your phone, the return ticket, insurance for the whole stay, proof of housing and recent bank statements. If you applied from abroad, make sure you enter within 6 months of the visa being issued. Families with children travelling with one parent carry the other parent's consent: it may be requested both on entry and at renewal.
Renewing the visa
The Premium Visa is renewed through the same portal. You upload your passport, new tickets, insurance and proof of housing for the next term, statements for the last 3 months and proof of income. Renewal is also free. Apply early so that insurance and housing for the new term are already in place on the filing date. If your basis has changed, for example you received a job offer in Mauritius, apply for an occupation permit instead of renewing.
What to check before applying
- income below $1,500 a month per adult or $500 per child, or not proved by 3 months of statements;
- working for local employers or clients, i.e. entering the Mauritian labour market;
- no insurance, return ticket or housing for the whole stated period;
- marriage and birth documents not in English or French;
- failing general immigration requirements, such as breaches on previous visits.
Premium Visa or retiree residence
| Premium Visa | Retiree residence permit | |
|---|---|---|
| Age | any | 50 and over |
| Money | income from $1,500 a month per adult | transfers to Mauritius of at least $1,500 a month or $18,000 a year |
| Term | up to 1 year, renewable | 10 years, renewable |
| Remote work for foreigners | allowed | not a work status |
| Fee | none | per Economic Development Board tariff |
If you are over 50 and ready to transfer money to a Mauritian account regularly, the retiree permit spares you annual renewals.
What to consider before moving
- Languages. Business and documents use English and French, so documents in other languages are translated.
- Cyclone season runs from November to April: choose housing and insurance accordingly.
- Healthcare. Foreigners usually use private clinics, so insurance for the whole stay is needed beyond the visa itself.
- Currency. Payments on the island are in Mauritian rupees, about 48 rupees per dollar.
- Banking. A Mauritian account is needed for rent and local payments, and every remittance affects tax, so we plan amounts and declarations in advance.
Family
A spouse and children apply together with the main applicant. Each adult must show income from $1,500 a month, plus $500 a month per child. A spouse needs a marriage certificate, children need birth certificates, and if a child travels with one parent, the other parent's consent. Children can attend international schools on the island teaching in English or French.
Taxes with the Premium Visa
A Premium Visa holder pays tax in Mauritius only on money remitted and deposited in a Mauritian bank account. Spending on the island with a foreign debit or credit card is not a remittance. If you declare that tax on that money has already been paid in your country of origin or residence, deposits in a Mauritian account are not taxed. Personal income tax is progressive, up to 20%. You become a Mauritian tax resident by spending 183 days or more in an income year, or 270 days or more in total over that year and the two preceding years. See taxes in Mauritius.
Can you buy a home
With a Premium Visa a foreigner may buy a home in projects under the special schemes for foreign buyers: integrated resort, real estate, property development and smart city schemes. A foreigner may also buy an apartment in a building of at least three storeys including the ground floor. Purchases under these schemes above a set amount give a separate residence permit.
How to stay in Mauritius longer
The Premium Visa does not lead to permanent residence by itself, but with it you can apply for other statuses through the Economic Development Board: an occupation permit for professionals, self-employed people and investors if you want to work or invest in Mauritius, or a residence permit for retired non-citizens. See Mauritius residence.
Risks and what can change
- Remote work for foreigners only. Any work in the local market needs an occupation permit.
- Tax residence. Spending 183 days or more in an income year makes you a Mauritian tax resident, so we plan remittances and declarations in advance.
- Conditions are set by the Economic Development Board. Thresholds and document lists can change without a new law.
- Insurance for the whole term. Without valid insurance there is no renewal.
Alternatives
- Mauritius residence - for retirees, investors and home buyers.
- Seychelles digital nomad visa - neighbouring Indian Ocean islands.
- Cabo Verde digital nomad visa - islands in the Atlantic.
- Malaysia digital nomad visa - for digital professionals.
