Personal accounts: Mauritius
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
Mauritius is an island state in the Indian Ocean and a financial centre used for business with Africa and Asia. Banks are supervised by the Bank of Mauritius and the currency is the Mauritian rupee, but accounts are usually opened in several currencies at once: dollars, euro, pounds. A personal account is needed by people moving to the island on a residence permit or long-stay visa, buying property here, owning a Mauritian company, or wanting to keep part of their savings in a stable jurisdiction with clear rules.
Who can open a personal account
| Your status | Chances | What else the bank will ask |
|---|---|---|
| Resident with a residence or work permit | high | passport, permit, address on the island |
| Property buyer under an Economic Development Board scheme | high | purchase agreement, source of funds from abroad |
| Owner of a Mauritian company | medium to high | company documents, address, source of funds |
| Remote worker on a long-stay visa | medium | visa, income from abroad, address |
| Non-resident with no link to Mauritius | low to medium | bank reference letter, large balance, detailed source of funds |
We will calculate online the cost of opening a personal account and maintaining it for a year.
Documents required
- Certified copy of the passport.
- Proof of address no older than three months: a utility bill or bank statement.
- A reference letter from your bank: since when you have held an account there and that it is in good standing.
- Proof of source of funds: income certificate, tax return, business documents or documents on the sale of assets.
- Tax residence and tax number: Mauritian banks report foreigners' accounts to the tax authorities of their countries.
Usually the bank wants to see the client at a branch on the island at least once. Without a visit an account is sometimes opened if the client is introduced by a licensed management company. The minimum initial deposit and balance depend on the bank and service level, and they are noticeably higher for non-residents.
Deposit protection and taxes
| Question | How it works |
|---|---|
| Deposit insurance | since 14 June 2024, up to Rs 300,000 per depositor per bank, ~$6,300, including foreign currency deposits |
| Tax on interest from savings and fixed deposits | interest is tax-exempt for individuals |
| Exchange controls | none, money can be transferred abroad freely |
| Account currencies | rupees, dollars, euro, pounds and others |
Dollar amounts are converted at the market rate of 5 October 2026, about 48.1 rupees per dollar, and rounded up. Deposit insurance in Mauritius is small compared with Europe, so large sums are usually spread across banks or held in investment products.
The account and moving to Mauritius
The account is closely tied to the basis for residence. A buyer of a home worth at least $375,000 in an approved project receives a residence permit for themselves and their family for as long as they own the property; the purchase money is transferred from abroad through a bank. A long-stay visa is issued for up to a year, renewable, to people who work remotely or live on income from abroad of at least $1,500 a month. More on the options on the Mauritius residence page.
How the opening works
- Assessment of your status and choice of a bank for your currencies, amount and service level.
- Document pack, reference letter and description of the source of funds.
- Branch visit or introduction through a management company, signing the agreement.
- Card, online banking and the first transfer.
For residents with documents the opening takes from a few days to two weeks. For non-residents the review usually takes two to six weeks.
Who gets refused
The bank will refuse if the source of money cannot be proven with documents, if there is no reference letter or the address is not confirmed, if the purpose of the account is unclear, or if the client or their money is linked to sanctions. We check whether the bank works with Russian citizens before preparing documents.
