What you can get in Jordan
Jordan in brief
Jordan is a Middle Eastern kingdom of about 11.5 million people; the capital is Amman. It is considered one of the region's most stable countries, with strong private healthcare, good international schools, English in business and many regional offices of international organisations. Its only sea access is at Aqaba on the Red Sea, which has a special economic zone with low taxes.
The Jordanian dinar is pegged to the dollar at about 0.71 dinars per dollar, so prices are stable, though life is not cheap. Jordan offers residence through property purchase and citizenship by investment.
How to move in 2026
| Basis | Main condition | More |
|---|---|---|
| Residence through property | a purchase from 150,000 dinars outside the capital, ~$211,600, or from 300,000 in Amman, ~$423,200, held 5 years | investing in Jordan |
| Citizenship by investment | a new project outside the capital from 500,000 dinars, ~$710,000, with 10 jobs; routes through shares and business exist | Jordanian citizenship |
| Work | a work permit through an employer | - |
| International organisation | accreditation through the organisation | - |
Many nationalities, including citizens of the European Union, the UK and the US, get a visa on arrival; the tourist pass with Petra entry includes its cost.
The first 30 days after the move
Entering Jordan is easy: many nationalities get a visa on arrival, and the Jordan Pass bought before the trip covers the visa fee and entry to Petra if its conditions are met. The difficulties start when you stay to live.
- A basis for living there. A residence and work permit is arranged through the employer or the investment authority, and residence for property comes after the title is registered. The family applies together with the investor.
- Housing and address. Both the bank and the authorities need an address in Jordan, so it pays not to delay a long-term lease.
- Bank account. Banks ask for a passport and a residence or work permit, an address in Jordan and a tax number, and they check the source of funds and the purpose of the account. More on the personal account in Jordan page.
Permanent residence and citizenship
Residence through property is issued for 5 years to the investor and family, renewable. Under the investment programme a temporary passport is issued for 3 years first, then full citizenship; with large share investments the route is direct. Dual citizenship is allowed, and residence in the country is not required. The Jordanian passport is weak for travel: about 50 destinations are open visa-free or with a visa on arrival.
Taxes
| Tax | Rate |
|---|---|
| Income tax | 5-25% for residents |
| Corporate tax | 20%, higher for some sectors |
| Sales tax | 16% |
| Aqaba special economic zone | 5% on profit for most activities |
Tax obligations depend on the source of income and place of residence, so they are calculated before the move.
Property
Foreigners buy flats and houses with government approval, which takes a few weeks. The largest market is Amman, while buyers seeking the sea choose Aqaba and the Dead Sea coast. For residence, the property must meet the threshold and be held for 5 years.
Business and accounts
In many sectors a foreigner can fully own a company, while some sectors limit foreign shares. Registration goes through the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and special zones offer incentives. Banks open accounts for foreigners with residence but check the source of funds. We help with personal accounts and business accounts.
Cost of living
| Item | Per month |
|---|---|
| Two-bedroom flat in Amman | 500-900 dinars, ~$710-1,300 |
| Flat in Aqaba | 350-700 dinars, ~$500-1,000 |
| Groceries for one | 150-250 dinars |
| International school | $8,000-25,000 a year |
| Budget for one with rent | $1,800-2,600 |
Budget for the first 3 months
A single person lives comfortably in Amman on $1,800-2,600 a month including rent, so plan $5,400-7,800 for the first three months. A family with a child in an international school needs from $4,000 a month, and the school itself costs $8,000-25,000 a year. A two-bedroom flat in Amman costs $710-1,300 a month, in Aqaba $500-1,000.
The Jordanian dinar is pegged to the US dollar at about 0.71 dinars per dollar, so there are no currency surprises if you count in dollars. Accounts are opened in dinars and dollars. Districts and prices are covered in our Amman guide. A manager calculates the full cost of the move for your family in the chat.
Family: schools and healthcare
International schools with American and British curricula and the International Baccalaureate operate in Amman and Aqaba. Private healthcare is among the region's strongest: patients come from neighbouring countries, and many doctors trained in the US and Europe.
Where to live
Amman is chosen for work, schools and hospitals, Aqaba for the sea, low taxes in the special zone and warm winters, and the Dead Sea coast for resort life. See the Amman city guide.
Practicalities
- a foreigner needs approval to buy property, and several authorities check the deal, so allow time in advance;
- residence is issued after property registration, and the family applies with the investor;
- for citizenship by investment, the source of funds and the project are checked first, then a temporary passport is issued;
- housing in Amman is chosen with heating: stone houses are cold in winter;
- during Ramadan office and café hours change.
Who Jordan suits
Investors who want residence or a second passport in a stable Middle Eastern country, staff of international organisations, and families who value schools and healthcare. It suits less those seeking low prices or a passport for free travel around the world.
