Personal accounts: Jordan
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
Jordan is a stable Middle Eastern economy and a convenient base for regional markets. Banks are supervised by the Central Bank of Jordan, and the Jordanian dinar is pegged to the US dollar at about JOD 0.709 per dollar, so one dinar is roughly $1.41. The fixed rate removes currency risk for those who count in dollars. A Jordanian bank account is needed by companies operating in the country and people living or earning income there.
Taxes
- Corporate income tax for most activities is 20%.
- Banks pay 35%, and telecommunications and insurance 24%.
- A foreign company with a registered office in Jordan is resident and taxed on income earned in the country.
What the bank checks
- a passport and residence or work permit;
- an address in Jordan and a tax number;
- for a company, its registration, owners and activity;
- the source of funds and purpose of the account.
Currency and transfers
Accounts are opened in dinars and US dollars. Thanks to the peg, dollar payments with foreign partners carry no exchange losses, and the bank checks the purpose and documents of large transfers.
Why applications are refused
- no residence status or activity in Jordan;
- an unverified source of funds;
- links to sanctioned countries and persons;
- operations that do not match the stated purpose.
Deposit insurance
Deposits in Jordan's commercial and Islamic banks are insured by the Jordan Deposit Insurance Corporation up to JOD 50,000, about $70,522, per depositor per bank. All of a person's accounts at one bank and its branches count as one deposit, so large savings are best spread across several banks.
How opening works
- Status. We check the residence permit, work permit or company registration.
- Bank. We choose a bank for the currency, turnover and purpose.
- Documents. We prepare Arabic translations and source of funds evidence.
- Visit. We support the branch meeting and online banking setup.
Personal and sales taxes
- General sales tax, similar to VAT, is 16%.
- Personal income tax is progressive, from 5% to 30%.
Conventional or Islamic bank
Jordan has both commercial and Islamic banks. An Islamic bank pays no interest: deposit returns depend on the bank's investment results, and financing is structured as sale with a markup or leasing. Deposits in Islamic banks are insured on the same terms as in commercial banks, so the choice depends on your views and the services you need.
What we do
We choose a bank, prepare documents and Arabic translations, and support the branch visit and application until the decision. A manager will calculate the cost in the chat.
A personal account in Jordan
A Jordanian bank opens a personal account with a passport and a residence or work permit. Some banks open accounts for non-residents with a clear purpose, such as paying for property or studies. Dinar and dollar accounts work well together: salary and local spending in dinars, savings and transfers from abroad in dollars.
After opening, the bank issues a card and online banking access, and domestic transfers can be sent through the national instant payment system, which works around the clock.
