How to get Brazilian citizenship in 2026
Four years with indefinite residence, or just one with a Brazilian child or a Brazilian spouse. You keep your old passport, but every year of residence is checked against documents.

Brazil does not ask you to give up your previous passport and grants citizenship after 4 years in the country, or after just one year for the parent of a Brazilian child or the spouse of a citizen. The price of that simplicity is paperwork: an address for every year, apostilled certificates and a Portuguese exam.
Who can get Brazilian citizenship
Brazil's 2017 Migration Law recognises four kinds of naturalisation, and for a foreigner moving as an adult two of them work: ordinary and reduced-term. The difference is not the documents but the time lived in the country.
| Type | For whom | Time in Brazil |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary | any adult foreigner with indefinite residence | 4 years |
| Reduced-term | a parent of a Brazilian child, the spouse of a Brazilian citizen, for services or professional merit | from 1 year |
| Extraordinary | those living in the country continuously with no criminal record | 15 years |
| Provisional | children who arrived in Brazil before age 10 | until adulthood, then definitive |
General conditions for everyone: legal capacity, residence in Brazil, the ability to communicate in Portuguese and no criminal record. Unlike many European countries, age, income and profession do not affect the right to apply.
How long must you live in Brazil to get citizenship
Ordinary naturalisation requires 4 years of living in the country, and in practice they are counted from the date of indefinite residence. So anyone who entered on a temporary permit spends longer: first a temporary status, then indefinite residence, then 4 years. For a property investor this usually adds up to about 8 years from purchase to passport.
The reduced term, from 1 year, applies to parents of a child born in Brazil and to spouses of Brazilian citizens who are not living apart at the time of the decision. It is one of the shortest legal routes to a passport in Latin America for a family with a child: giving birth in Brazil cuts the term fourfold. Details are on the page giving birth in Brazil and citizenship.
Each year of living in the country must be backed by proof of address. Registration certificates, leases and utility bills in your own name are checked more strictly than many expect, while bank statements and mobile phone bills are not accepted in disputed cases.
We will work out online when you can apply and what fees and documents will cost for your family.
Which residence permit you need for Brazilian naturalisation
You can apply for citizenship with indefinite residence. The route to it depends on the ground:
- reunification with a Brazilian child or a Brazilian spouse - usually indefinite residence straight away;
- a property investment from 1,000,000 reais, about $200,600, or from 700,000 reais, about $140,400, in the north and north-east - temporary residence, then indefinite; details on the page Brazilian residence;
- the digital nomad visa with income from $1,500 a month from abroad or $18,000 in an account - up to a year with renewal; details on the page Brazil nomad visa;
- work, study and other grounds - a temporary status later changed to indefinite.
The National Migration Registry card is issued by the Federal Police for a fee of 204.77 reais, about $50. Without it and a Brazilian tax number you cannot apply for citizenship.
The Portuguese exam for Brazilian citizenship
The law requires the ability to communicate in Portuguese, taking the applicant's circumstances into account. The main proof is a certificate from the state Portuguese proficiency exam for foreigners at intermediate level or higher. The exam is held twice a year, in Brazil and abroad.
Other documents are accepted instead of the exam: a diploma from a Brazilian university or school, proof of studies in Brazil and several other documents on the Ministry of Justice list. Those learning from scratch should allow at least six months: the exam tests not only grammar but the ability to write coherent texts.
What documents you need for Brazilian citizenship
The file is submitted online, but each paper is old-school in spirit: translation, apostille and a fresh date.
- the National Migration Registry card with indefinite status and a Brazilian tax number;
- a criminal record certificate from your country of citizenship with an apostille and a sworn Portuguese translation, usually no older than 180 days;
- Brazilian certificates of no criminal record from the federal and state courts, plus certificates of no protests and no labour debts;
- proof of address for every year of residence: leases, water or electricity bills, or the property owner's declaration with their bill;
- proof of Portuguese;
- for the reduced term, the birth certificate of a Brazilian child or the marriage certificate with a Brazilian citizen.
A frequent detail that sends a file back for more documents is a different spelling of the surname in Russian documents, the foreigner card and the child's certificate. It is best to align the transliteration before applying.
Documents from Russia: how not to lose months
The criminal record certificate is ordered from the Russian Interior Ministry on paper: the electronic extract from the public services portal cannot be apostilled. The apostille is affixed in Russia, and the Portuguese translation is made by a sworn translator in Brazil, because the Federal Police usually does not accept other translations.
The certificate is valid for a limited time, so it is ordered last, once the other documents are ready. If you get it first, it may expire before you apply, and everything starts again: a new request to the Interior Ministry, a new apostille, a new translation. Those living in Brazil can order it through a representative in Russia.
How to apply for Brazilian citizenship: steps and timelines
| Step | What happens | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Preparation | certificates, apostilles, sworn translations, proof of language | 1-3 months |
| 2. Application | online submission through the government portal | 1 day |
| 3. Review | the Federal Police checks documents and may request more | months |
| 4. Reply to a request | send documents for every item | 30 days, otherwise the file is closed |
| 5. Decision | the Ministry of Justice, publication in the official gazette | from several months to a year |
| 6. Citizen documents | identity card, passport, electoral registration | after publication |
Almost everyone receives a request for additional documents, and it is not a refusal. The danger is missing it: without a reply within 30 days the application is closed, and an extension must be requested before the deadline.
Dual citizenship: what happens to a Russian passport
Brazil does not require new citizens to give up their previous citizenship, and since 2023 Brazilians themselves no longer lose citizenship when acquiring another. The Russian passport is kept, but a Russian citizen must notify the Interior Ministry of a second citizenship within 60 days. Rules for other countries are in the overview dual citizenship in 2026.
Brazilian citizenship through a child and through marriage
A child born in Brazil is Brazilian by birth under Article 12 of the Constitution, even if both parents are foreigners. Citizenship does not pass to the parents automatically, but the law gives them family reunification residence and the right to apply for naturalisation after a year of living in the country.
A spouse of a Brazilian citizen also needs one year, provided the marriage has not broken down by the time of the decision. A sham marriage for a passport is a bad idea: immigration authorities check cohabitation, and the consequences go far beyond a refusal.
Why Brazilian citizenship is refused
- no proof of address for some year of residence;
- no proof of Portuguese;
- a criminal record certificate without an apostille, without a sworn translation or older than allowed;
- a conviction or open criminal case in Brazil or abroad;
- no reply to a request for additional documents within 30 days;
- for the reduced term, living apart from the spouse at the time of the decision.
Taxes after getting Brazilian citizenship
A passport alone does not make you a tax resident: in Brazil tax depends on where you live. Residents pay tax on worldwide income at rates up to 27.5%, and from 2026 income up to 5,000 reais a month, about $1,100, is exempt. Details are on the page taxes in Brazil and in the article taxes in Brazil for foreigners.
