How to send money to Brazil in 2026: reais through a currency exchange in 2 business days and a purpose code

8 min read ·

In 2026 money reaches Brazil in reais: an authorised bank or licensed transfer service converts the currency, and the exchange settles within 2 business days. Transfer services accept up to $10,000 per operation, and a bank credits a large sum to an account against a taxpayer number, a purpose code and source-of-funds documents.

Reais through a currency exchange: 2 routes to Brazil in 2026

Every transfer to Brazil in 2026 is a currency exchange at an institution the Central Bank has authorised for foreign exchange, and 2 routes work.

MethodStatus on 8 October 2026CurrencyAmount limitTimeWhat you need
Bank transfer to your own accountworksreais after exchangeno legal capthe exchange settles within 2 business daystaxpayer number, purpose code, source-of-funds documents for a large amount
Licensed international transfer serviceworksreaisup to $10,000 per operationminutes to one daythe recipient's taxpayer number

The bank sets its own exchange rate, but for operations up to $100,000 it must state the final price in reais before the transfer - with the rate, the tax and all fees - and that figure is the easiest way to compare banks. For more than $10,000 choose a bank transfer: transfer services accept up to $10,000 per operation. The rules of the sending country are covered in sending large sums abroad, and we will suggest the best route for your amount with the smallest loss on the exchange.

A taxpayer number from the consulate: the first step to a transfer to Brazil

The 11-digit Brazilian taxpayer number is required for any foreigner with an account, investments or property in Brazil. Abroad it is issued free of charge in person at a Brazilian consulate: a form on the tax service website, an appointment, a visit with your passport and proof of address; no card is issued, the number arrives by email.

A bank will also ask a non-resident for the tax number of their country of residence and proof of address abroad, and for a large sum - statements, a property sale contract, inheritance or income documents. If you need the taxpayer number quickly, a manager will check how to get it at your consulate.

We will help you send money to Brazil

Mistakes cost more than fees: a transfer without a taxpayer number, a wrong purpose code that makes money from an apartment sale leave with extra tax, more than $10,000 through a transfer service, an extra round trip across the border with tax on the way in and out. We will help you avoid them: we get the taxpayer number, choose the purpose code for your goal, gather the source-of-funds documents and test the route with a trial payment.

Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: everything depends on the amount, the bank and your situation.

The transfer purpose code: chosen before the payment

The client chooses the purpose code for a foreign exchange transfer to Brazil, and the bank must help: up to $50,000 a simplified list of purposes applies, above that a detailed one, which has separate purposes for moving personal capital and for buying property in the country. Currency Law 14.286/2021, in force since 31 December 2022, lets money move freely in and out, through an authorised bank and with a purpose code.

The purpose code determines the tax and documents when the money goes back out, so a large sum that may later return abroad is classified correctly from the first payment. Under Article 9 of the law, foreign capital has the same regime as domestic capital.

0.38% in, 3.5% out: the financial operations tax

Sending your own money to Brazil is not subject to income tax: on the exchange of an incoming personal transfer you pay only the 0.38% financial operations tax under Decree 6.306/2007 as amended in 2025.

OperationTax in 2026
Incoming personal transfer0.38% on exchange
Foreign investor money entering the financial market0%
Transfer to your own account abroad3.5%
Transfer abroad for investment1.1%

So money that will stay in Brazil for a long time is sent straight away, and money that may be needed abroad is kept where it is: every extra round trip across the border costs 0.38% on the way in and up to 3.5% on the way out.

Reais for residents and non-residents

In Brazil in 2026 a resident individual's money is credited in reais, and a foreign-currency account is available to a foreigner staying in the country temporarily - it receives only money from abroad. Banks open a non-resident real account on the same terms as for a resident, and certain banks offer it.

Who opens the accountHow fastWhat matters to the bank
Resident with a residence permitfastesttaxpayer number, migration card or police protocol, address
Foreigner temporarily in the countryin one visittaxpayer number, passport, purpose of the account
Non-resident with property or a business in Brazilafter the documents are checkedtaxpayer number, tax number of their own country, source of funds

Deposits are protected by the Credit Guarantee Fund: up to $51,000 (250,000 reais) per person at one bank and no more than $210,000 (1 million reais) in payouts over 4 years, and non-residents are covered too.

$10,000, $50,000, $100,000: Brazilian thresholds for a transfer

In Brazil the bank's questions and the transfer method change at 3 thresholds, all written into the foreign exchange market rules.

The thresholds apply in 2026:

AmountWhat changesWhat to prepare
Up to $10,000also goes through a transfer servicethe recipient's taxpayer number
$10,000-50,000bank transfer only, simplified list of purposestaxpayer number, purpose code, statements showing the source of funds
$50,000-100,000 and abovedetailed list of purposes; up to $100,000 the bank states the final price in reais in advancea property sale contract or income documents, a purchase contract in Brazil

Source-of-funds documents are covered in proof of source of funds, and for $100,000 or more the route and purpose code are agreed with the bank before the first payment.

An apartment and investor residence in Brazil

A foreigner buys urban property in Brazil with no limit on size and pays by transfer through a bank exchange with the purpose code for buying property in the country. Property transfer tax is 3% in both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and with the notary and registration the costs usually come to 4-6% of the price.

Buying a home gives investor residence: from $210,000 (1 million reais), or from $150,000 (700,000 reais) in the North and Northeast, first for 4 years, then indefinitely. Whether the transfer is registered as a personal capital move or as a foreign investment is decided with the bank before the payment. Is the bank asking where the money for the apartment comes from? A manager will advise which purpose code and documents fit. Choosing a property and getting the status are covered on the property in Brazil and Brazil residence permit pages.

Taxes for Brazilian residents in 2026

A Brazilian tax resident pays tax on income from all countries, and from 1 January 2026, under Law 15.270/2025, income up to $1,100 a month (5,000 reais) is effectively exempt from income tax. Interest on a resident's bank deposits is taxed at 22.5% down to 15% depending on the term, and a savings account is tax-free.

A resident's income from investments abroad is taxed at 15% in the annual return. More on the taxes in Brazil page, and the legal routes for large sums are on the capital relocation page.

Where money goes from Brazil: MERCOSUR neighbours and the USA

From Brazil money most often goes to its neighbours and the USA, and in 2026 an outgoing transfer is taxed at 3.5% to your own account abroad or 1.1% for investment. To Paraguay and Argentina a payment in national currency also goes through the settlement system of the MERCOSUR countries.

  • To Paraguay: from Brazil you can also pay in reais through the MERCOSUR system.
  • To Argentina: a neighbouring market where money can be kept in dollars.
  • To the USA: a dollar account for those who keep savings outside reais.
