How to send money to Zambia in 2026: dollars or kwacha to an account in Lusaka in 1-3 business days, with no currency controls
In 2026 a dollar in Zambia costs about 19.9 kwacha, and the country has had no currency controls since 1994. We show what details a bank in Lusaka needs without an international account number, when to exchange currency into kwacha, how a foreigner obtains land and what papers each sum needs.
Money is sent to Zambia in dollars, euros or pounds to an account at a bank in Lusaka, Ndola or Livingstone, and the recipient's bank credits it in kwacha or keeps it in foreign currency. The country has had no currency controls since 1994, so money comes in and goes out freely. On 8 October 2026 the Bank of Zambia set the dollar at 19.9 kwacha.
| Method | How it works in 2026 | What the sender needs |
|---|---|---|
| dollars, euros, pounds | through a correspondent bank to an account in kwacha or foreign currency, 1-3 business days | the account number, the bank and branch code, the recipient's name |
| helping family | to relatives' bank account | the payment purpose: family support |
| renting a plot or a house | to the account of the landlord or seller | the lease and a document on the money |
Checked on 9 October 2026; kwacha at the Bank of Zambia rate on 8 October 2026: buying 19.89, selling 19.94 per dollar.
The kwacha has strengthened: 19.9 per dollar in October 2026
The kwacha is a floating currency, and over the past year it has been getting stronger. In June 2025 the Bank of Zambia average rate was 24.4 kwacha per dollar, and in June 2026 it was already 17.8. By October the dollar had risen a little, to 19.9 kwacha, which is still much less than 24.4 in mid-2025.
For a large sum this means one thing: the rate on the day of exchange matters more than the fee. Banks in Zambia keep dollar accounts, so money for a purchase or construction is kept in foreign currency and exchanged in parts. A manager will tell you when it is best to exchange your sum.

Within the country money quickly spreads through mobile wallets: this way relatives in small towns receive a transfer on the same day it arrives in an account in Lusaka.
We will help you send money to Zambia
Mistakes cost more than fees: the whole sum exchanged into kwacha on one day, a transfer without the bank and branch code, paying for a plot before the lease and the status are arranged, and a large sum with no papers on its origin. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the transfer route and currency, put together documents on the origin of the money for the bank in Lusaka and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.
Details and the cost are with a manager in the chat: much depends on the amount, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.
No currency controls since 1994: money flows both ways
On 28 January 1994 Zambia suspended the exchange control law, and the kwacha became fully convertible for both current payments and investments. Since then banks themselves have carried out transfers of dividends, salaries and property sale proceeds abroad, checking only taxes and documents. The temporary currency rules of 2012-2013 were cancelled in March 2014.
Zambia has no international account number. The sender needs the recipient's account number, the bank and branch code and the bank's international code: with them the transfer is credited the first time.
Land in Zambia: a lease of up to 99 years
Under the 1995 Lands Act all land belongs to the president on behalf of the people, and an owner receives a lease from the state for up to 99 years with the right to renew. A foreigner obtains a plot if they have permanent residence, investor status, the president's written consent or the plot was inherited. A house or land can be rented for up to 5 years without these conditions.

So money for a purchase or construction is sent once the lease and the status are arranged. The capital is described on the Lusaka page.
The amount of a transfer to Lusaka and the papers for it
Up to $10,000. The payment purpose is enough for the bank: family support, studies, rent.
$10,000-$100,000. A bank in Lusaka will ask for a six-month statement and a document on the money: an income certificate, a sale contract or a deed of gift.
From $100,000. A package on the origin of the wealth and a land lease are prepared; details are in proof of source of funds and sending a large sum abroad. Moving capital step by step is on the capital relocation page, and a manager will calculate the transfer terms before sending.
