About 64 meticais per dollar: a rate that has held all year
The Bank of Mozambique publishes reference rates three times a day, and in 2026 the dollar has barely moved in them: the average rate in January and in September is the same, 63.9 meticais. This is convenient for the sender: $10,000 gives about 639,000 meticais before fees, and the sum can be worked out in advance.
The euro in the same bulletin is about 74 meticais, while banks exchange the South African rand at their own rate. So euros are more often sent from Europe and rand from South Africa, with no intermediate exchange into dollars.
Most money comes to Mozambique from South Africa, where many people from the southern provinces work, and it is then sent on across the country through mobile wallets. According to the Bank of Mozambique, about $15 billion went through such wallets in January-October 2025, more than in the whole of 2024.

The land belongs to the state, the house to the owner: how a purchase is paid for
Under the Constitution of Mozambique land belongs to the state and is not sold. A house owner receives the right to use the plot, and in a city this right passes to the buyer automatically together with the building, under the 1997 land law. So the contract buys a house or a flat, and the money is transferred to the seller for the building.
A foreigner receives a new plot for building on application if they have an approved investment project; a private person must have lived in the country for 5 years. The right of use is inherited, and the house on the plot can be sold or mortgaged.

Transfers to Mozambique by step: $10,000, $100,000 and above
Up to $10,000. The payment purpose is enough for the bank: support for family, study, medical treatment.
$10,000-100,000. A bank in Maputo will ask for a 6-month statement and a document on the money: an income certificate, a sale contract or a deed of gift.
From $100,000. From Maputo to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia
Money leaves for South Africa in rand, usually in 1-2 business days. To Zimbabwe dollars are sent, and the recipient keeps them on a dollar account. To Zambia dollars are sent, and the recipient's bank exchanges them into kwacha.
