South Africa digital nomad visa
A visa for people working remotely for a foreign company who want to live in South Africa for up to three years. We cover income, documents, cost, family, taxes and refusals.

South Africa issues a remote work visa to foreigners employed or contracted by a company outside the country. The Department of Home Affairs approved the final rules on 9 October 2024: income of at least 650,796 rand a year, about $39,147, is required, and the stay is up to 36 months.
Who the visa suits
- Remote employees of foreign companies under an employment contract.
- Contractors working under a contract for a client outside South Africa.
- Working for companies and clients in South Africa itself is not allowed on this visa: that requires a work visa.
- Income must be at least 650,796 rand a year, about $39,147, or about 54,233 rand a month, about $3,263.
The threshold is set in rand, so its dollar equivalent moves with the exchange rate. An early draft discussed 1,000,000 rand, but the final threshold is lower.
How much the visa costs in 2026
- state visa fee - about $30;
- visa centre service fee - per the centre's tariff in your country;
- police clearances, apostille and English translation;
- health insurance for the whole stay;
- housing in South Africa;
- our support, if you hand preparation to us.
For a family, fees, certificates and insurance are arranged for each member, and the applicant's income must also cover relatives. A manager will calculate the total for your family in the chat. Dollar amounts use the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026, rounded up.
A fee of about $30, but income of 650,796 rand a year is required
The state fee for the South Africa remote work visa is about $30, and the main condition is income of at least 650,796 rand a year, about $39,150. The law does not stop you applying on your own. But mistakes cost more than fees: statements that do not show the required income for the last 3 months, an employer or client in South Africa itself, a contract not signed by both sides, missing police certificates from every country where you lived more than a year in the last 5. We check income and the contract, gather certificates with apostilles and translations, prepare the family application and handle the renewal.
The cost of support depends on your family and the number of certificates; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
Documents
- a passport valid for at least 30 days after the planned stay ends, with two blank pages;
- application form and photos;
- a contract with the foreign employer or client signed by both parties;
- bank statements for the last 3 months showing income of at least 650,796 rand a year;
- police clearances from every country where you lived more than 12 months in the past 5 years;
- health insurance;
- proof of housing in South Africa;
- for family, marriage and children's birth certificates.
Documents in other languages are translated into English, and foreign certificates need an apostille.
Police certificates are accepted only if issued within 6 months before filing. So they are ordered last, with the apostille and translation planned in advance: in Russia the certificate takes up to 30 days.
We will check online whether your income is enough with your family included and calculate the visa cost for each member.
Who is refused
- income below 650,796 rand a year or not shown in the last 3 months of statements;
- the employer or client is in South Africa;
- the contract is not signed by both sides or does not confirm remote work;
- missing police clearances from countries where you lived over a year in the past 5 years;
- no health insurance or proof of housing;
- the passport expires less than 30 days after the stay ends.
Family
A spouse and children can live in South Africa with the applicant. They need marriage and birth certificates, insurance for each and proof that income and housing cover the whole family. Children attending a local school need a separate study status, so choose the school before applying.
Where to apply and how to extend
The application is filed before entry, through the visa centre or South African consulate in your country of citizenship or permanent residence. The visa is issued for up to 36 months if the documents prove income and work for the whole period. A stay can be extended from within the country if you still work for a foreign employer and meet the income requirement. Switching from a remote work visa to a work visa or another status inside South Africa is harder, so choose the basis for a long stay in advance.
Taxes
South Africa taxes its residents on worldwide income at progressive rates from 18% to 45%. You can become resident by physical presence: more than 91 days in the current year and in each of the five previous years and more than 915 days in total over those five years, or if South Africa becomes where you ordinarily live. For long stays, a remote work visa holder registers with the South African Revenue Service, and we work out in advance where and how much you will pay, taking into account the tax treaty with the employer's country.
What to consider before moving
- Healthcare. Foreigners usually use private clinics, so insurance is needed for the whole stay, not only for the application.
- Banking. It is easier to receive salary into an account abroad and open a South African account for local spending; the bank will ask for the visa, address and proof of income.
- Housing. Leases are usually for a year with a deposit, so the first weeks are spent in temporary housing.
- Traffic drives on the left; foreign licences work initially if in English or translated.
Risks and what may change
- A rand threshold. The dollar amount moves with the rate, and the threshold may be revised.
- Tax residence. Three years in the country can make you a South African resident taxed on worldwide income.
- Consular timing varies: in some countries processing takes over a month.
- Remote work for foreigners only: side work for local companies breaches the visa.
Alternatives
- Mauritius Premium Visa - free, income from $1,500 a month.
- Namibia digital nomad visa - a neighbouring country.
- Seychelles digital nomad visa - Indian Ocean islands.
- Cabo Verde digital nomad visa - Atlantic islands.
