Argentina grants digital nomads transitory residence for 180 days with one extension for the same period. It is available only to nationals of countries that need no tourist visa for Argentina, including Russia, and only to those working remotely for people or companies abroad.

Who the digital nomad visa suits

The visa suits people who work remotely via the internet and telecoms for people or companies registered outside Argentina: employees of foreign companies, freelancers and entrepreneurs with foreign clients. Working for Argentine employers or clients is not allowed under this status.

  • Nationality. Only for nationals of countries that need no tourist visa for Argentina. Russian, Ukrainian and EU nationals qualify; check your country before travelling.
  • Lawful entry. An entry stamp, usually as a tourist, is required. You apply while in Argentina.
  • Work. Proven remote activity: a contract, an employer letter, invoices and payments received.
  • Clean record. An Argentine criminal record certificate for everyone over 16.

How much Argentina's digital nomad visa costs in 2026

Migration fees were set by a 2024 decree and are counted in migration service units, one unit being 1,000 pesos. For nationals outside the Southern Common Market:

  • transitory residence - 32 units, 32,000 pesos, about $22;
  • extension of digital nomad transitory residence - 40 units, 40,000 pesos, about $27;
  • if the service processes you as a change from tourist to special grounds - 100 units, 100,000 pesos, about $66;
  • a priority appointment for an extra fee.

The exact amount is generated by the migration service system. You also pay for apostilles in your country, sworn Spanish translation certified by the translators' association, the criminal record certificate and our support if you hand the process to us. For a family, fees and documents apply to each member; a manager will calculate the total in the chat. Dollar amounts use the rate of 6 October 2026, about 1,519 pesos per dollar, rounded up.

Documents for the digital nomad visa

  • a valid passport;
  • an Argentine National Recidivism Registry criminal record certificate for everyone over 16;
  • proof of address in Argentina;
  • proof of lawful entry;
  • an application with personal details and a description of your remote work;
  • a short CV with experience and education;
  • proof of work: a contract, a company letter, records of payments or fees received;
  • at least one professional reference.

Foreign documents need an apostille, and those in other languages a Spanish translation by an Argentine sworn translator certified by the translators' association. Originals are filed. How to get proof of address is covered in our article on the certificate of address.

How to prove remote work

  • Employee of a foreign company: an employment contract and an employer letter confirming you work remotely and may do so from Argentina, with your position and salary, plus statements showing salary received.
  • Freelancer: contracts with foreign clients, invoices and statements showing payments in recent months, and a reference from a regular client.
  • Owner of a business abroad: company registration documents, proof of payments to you from the company and the company's client contracts.

The clearer the link between contracts and payments into your account, the faster the migration service decides. You will need the same documents for the extension, so keep statements from the first month.

Where and how to file

The application is filed in person; this status is not processed through the migration service's online filing system. In Buenos Aires you book by the migration service's email, in the provinces at the local delegation or migration office. You must be in Argentina when filing and pay only the fees generated by the service's system. With a priority appointment, the criminal record certificate is obtained separately and brought on the day.

Extension and what to do after 360 days

The status can be extended once for the same 180 days. The extension requires a valid passport and proof of remote work income for the period lived. After that the nomad status is not extended and does not lead directly to permanent residence.

To stay longer you need another basis for temporary residence: for people with steady income from abroad, for work, study or family. We plan the switch in advance while the nomad status is valid. See Argentina residence.

Who is refused

  • nationals of countries that need a tourist visa for Argentina;
  • those working for Argentine employers or clients;
  • no proof of remote work and payments received;
  • a criminal record, unlawful entry or overstay;
  • documents without an apostille or a translation not made by an Argentine sworn translator.

What to do before you fly

  1. Gather proof of work: a contract or employer letter, client invoices, statements showing recent payments.
  2. Apostille documents issued in your country while you are at home: it cannot be done in Argentina.
  3. Prepare a CV and a reference from an employer or client.
  4. Buy insurance for the whole planned stay.
  5. Allow time for translation: sworn translation and certification by the translators' association take from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Family

There is no family procedure for digital nomads: each family member obtains status on their own basis. A spouse who also works remotely for foreigners applies as a nomad. Children and non-working relatives are processed on other temporary residence grounds, so we review the family before entry.

Healthcare and insurance

Since 2025, foreigners with temporary or transitory status or without lawful status pay for non-emergency care in national public hospitals; only emergency care remains free. The health ministry approved the payment procedure in 2026. A digital nomad is not a permanent resident, so private health insurance for the whole stay is an essential part of the budget. The 2025 decree also provides for insurance as an entry condition.

Taxes and banking

Argentine personal income tax is progressive, from 5% to 35%. Whether you owe tax depends on the length of stay and the source of income: Argentine rules may treat work physically performed in the country as Argentine-source income. We calculate taxes before the move; see taxes in Argentina.

For peso payments you will need Argentine bank details; see our guide to bank and virtual accounts.

Risks and what may change

  • Short horizon. At most 360 days, then you need another basis.
  • Migration law is changing. A 2025 decree revised migration rules and courts are challenging parts of it, so we check the procedure on the filing date.
  • Fees rise. The value of the migration service unit is set by decree and can be revised.
  • Prices. Since currency controls were lifted, costs in dollars have risen noticeably, so we budget the move at current prices.

What changed and what we rely on

The digital nomad status was introduced by a 2022 order of the National Directorate of Migration based on article 24 of the migration law. Fees follow a 2024 decree; one migration service unit equals 1,000 pesos.
