How to send money to Argentina in 2026: dollars in full to your own account, pesos or a money transfer service
Money goes to Argentina by bank transfer to your own account: a dollar account receives dollars in the same amount, a peso account at the bank's rate. Through a money transfer service, pesos or dollars arrive within minutes to a day. In 2026 the bank asks for a tax key and the purpose, and from $10,000 for statements.
The Central Bank of Argentina rate on 7 October 2026 is 1,520.71 pesos per dollar, amounts rounded up. The rules were checked on 8 October 2026.
Dollars to a dollar account: routes for money to Argentina in 2026
In 2026 money reaches Argentina by 3 routes, and the most profitable is the one that keeps dollars as dollars.
| Method | Status on 8 October 2026 | Currency | Amount limit | Timing | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer to your own account in dollars | works | dollars, the same amount | not limited by law | set by the bank | a tax key, an account in your name, documents on the origin of a large sum |
| Transfer to your own account in pesos | works | pesos at the bank's rate | not limited by law | set by the bank | the same documents |
| Money transfer service | works | pesos or dollars | the service's and the bank's limit per operation | from minutes to a day | the recipient's passport |
A bank may not charge a resident for crediting a dollar transfer to a dollar account; only correspondent bank charges remain. General rules for large transfers are in sending a large sum abroad, and we will suggest the best way to send your amount so that dollars stay dollars.
The single tax key from 2 March 2026: the first step
Since 2 March 2026 a foreigner in Argentina is issued a single tax key instead of the former number for foreigners, and without it an Argentine bank will not open an account or credit a transfer in a foreigner's name. A non-resident gets the key through a representative with an address in Argentina, or in person at a tax office by appointment if temporarily in the country.
The key requires an application, a passport and a document on non-resident status. Foreign documents for the bank are submitted with an apostille or consular legalisation and a translation by an Argentine sworn translator, and the client form includes your name, date and place of birth, address, occupation and a statement on whether you hold public office.
Argentine account details are a 22-digit number; how to read it is covered in Argentine account details. If you need the tax key before you arrive, a manager will check how to get it through a representative.
Currency rules after April 2025: keep your dollars
Since 14 April 2025 Argentine residents buy dollars with no amount limit, and a transfer from abroad is credited to a foreign currency account with no mandatory sale. The current rules are collected in the Central Bank's consolidated text on the foreign exchange market as amended on 14 September 2026.

A resident transfers their own dollars from their own account to their own account abroad; the bank registers the operation, and securities for currency are bought 90 days after it. A non-resident buys currency with the Central Bank's consent, and money brought in and sold as direct investment from 21 April 2025 can be taken out no earlier than 180 days later. Hence a simple rule: keep the money on your own dollar account and sell only the part you spend in pesos, then a transfer back out goes without extra steps.
The 0.6% tax and the savings account: what is paid on money in Argentina
Transferring your own money to Argentina is not taxed, and the 0.6% tax on credits and debits to bank accounts under Law 25,413 is not charged on savings accounts. That is why money from abroad is received on a savings account.
| Payment | Rate in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Transfer of your own money from abroad | not taxed |
| Tax on bank transactions | 0.6% on credits and debits, not charged on savings accounts |
| Tax on a resident's personal assets | 0.5% and 0.75%; for 2025, assets up to $260,000 (384.7 million pesos) are not taxed |
You become an Argentine tax resident by where you live, and then income from all countries is taxed. Law 27,799 on tax good faith, adopted in January 2026, introduced a simplified return for people with income up to $660,000 (1,000 million pesos) and assets up to $6,600,000 (10,000 million pesos).
A transfer to a non-resident's savings account: pesos, dollars, euros or yuan
In 2026 any private individual with legal capacity can open a savings account at an Argentine bank, in 4 currencies: pesos, dollars, euros or yuan. The Central Bank's rules do not require residence, but the bank checks a non-resident in more detail.
| Who opens the account | How fast | What matters to the bank |
|---|---|---|
| A resident with a residence permit | fastest | identity card, tax key, address |
| A foreigner who works or studies in the country | fast | a contract or certificate, migration status |
| A non-resident with property or a business in Argentina | after the documents are checked | property documents, the origin of the money |
| A non-resident with no link to the country | slowest | a clear purpose for the account: a purchase, a deposit, a business |
Since 1 April 2026 deposits in pesos and foreign currency are insured up to $33,000 (50 million pesos) per person at each bank.
From $10,000 to $170,000: what an Argentine bank will ask
Argentine law sets no numeric threshold for documents: the bank decides by its own risk assessment and checks that the turnover on the account matches the declared activity. In practice the questions grow across 3 amount levels.
| Amount | What the bank will ask | What to attach |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $10,000, about 15.2 million pesos | the tax key and the purpose | passport, client form, a clear purpose |
| $10,000-170,000 | where the money comes from | statements, an income certificate, a contract for the sale of property with an apostille and translation |
| From $170,000 | the whole chain of the money, a detailed check by the notary when buying a home | documents for each step of the transfer, the purchase contract |
Moving to Buenos Aires with $50,000: the route step by step
A family moves to Buenos Aires with $50,000, about 76 million pesos, and rents a flat. The 4-step route for the money looks like this.
- Tax key - through a representative before arrival or in person at the tax office by appointment.
- A savings account in dollars and pesos - at a bank that works with non-residents.
- Transfer in dollars - to the dollar account for the same amount, with statements on the origin of the money.
- Spending - sell into pesos only what is needed for the month, and the rest stays in dollars under the insurance of up to $33,000 at each bank.
A flat in Buenos Aires: the notary and stamp duty
Property in Argentina is bought through a notary, and for a deal above 700 minimum wages, about $170,000 (257.46 million pesos), the notary checks the origin of the money in more detail. Stamp duty in the City of Buenos Aires is 2.7% of the price up to $150,000 (226.1 million pesos) and 3.5% above that, and 2% in the Province of Buenos Aires.

Paying by transfer from your own foreign currency account is the most convenient: the statement immediately proves the origin of the money for both the notary and the bank. The bank or the notary asks you to explain where the money comes from? A specialist will put together the documents for your deal. Choosing a property is on the property in Argentina page, living conditions on Argentine residence permit, and the procedure for large sums on capital relocation.
Onward from Argentina: Paraguay, Brazil, the USA
In 2026 money from Argentina most often goes in 3 neighbouring directions, and a dollar account makes the route short: dollars are sent without exchange.
- To Paraguay: free inflow of capital and dollar accounts.
- To Brazil: everything is credited in reais through a currency exchange.
- To the USA: a dollar account with a passport.

A transfer back out of Argentina goes in dollars from your own dollar account; choose the route before sending.
