How to send money to Kiribati in 2026: the Australian dollar, the single bank in Tarawa and transfers from family abroad

5 min read ·

In 2026 Kiribati has one commercial bank and uses the Australian dollar instead of its own currency. We explain how to send money to Tarawa from Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Europe, why the state budget rests on a fund of 1.67 billion Australian dollars, where transfers come from and what papers each sum needs.

Money is sent to Kiribati to an account at the country's only commercial bank, and it credits it in Australian dollars: this is Kiribati's currency, and the country has no central bank. From Australia and New Zealand a transfer arrives without extra exchange, and the bank converts US dollars, euros and other currencies into Australian dollars. In October 2026 1,000 Australian dollars were worth about $700.

One bank for the whole country: almost $200 million of deposits

Kiribati has one commercial bank: it has worked since 2001 as part of an Australian banking group and publishes its accounts every year under the 2021 financial institutions law. On 30 September 2025 it held 276 million Australian dollars of deposits, almost $200 million, and 315 million Australian dollars of assets.

For the sender this makes the choice simple: the details are the same, the recipient's bank is always the same, and Australian dollars from Australia arrive without exchange. A manager will tell you how to fill in the details so that the transfer does not come back.

Almost all the country's residents and institutions are concentrated on South Tarawa, covered on the Tarawa page.

We will help you send money to Kiribati

Mistakes cost more than fees: US dollars changed first into euros and then into Australian dollars, incomplete details for the only bank, a transfer on Friday without allowing for the time difference, and a large sum without papers on its source. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and currency of the transfer, collect documents on the source of the money for the bank in Tarawa and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: a lot depends on the sum, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.

The Revenue Equalisation Reserve Fund: 1.67 billion Australian dollars

Since 1956 Kiribati has set aside income from phosphate mining in the Revenue Equalisation Reserve Fund. In June 2025 it reached a record 1.67 billion Australian dollars, about $1.2 billion, and in 2025 it returned 10%.

The country covers part of its budget from the fund: a drawdown of 78 million Australian dollars, about $55 million, is planned for 2026. So the budget and salaries in the country are stable, and the Australian dollar remains the currency of payments.

Seasonal work and the New Zealand quota: where transfers come from

Many families in Kiribati live on money from relatives who work in Australia and New Zealand. Every year New Zealand holds a ballot for 75 permanent residence places for citizens of Kiribati: in 2026 registration ran from 1 to 30 April, and the ballot was held on 20 May.

If you are paying to Kiribati from another country and the bank asks you to explain the purpose of the transfer, there are usually more options than it seems: a manager will choose a route for your situation.

Tarawa lives 12 hours ahead of Greenwich, and since 1995 the Line Islands have lived 14 hours ahead, earlier than anywhere else on the planet. When it is Friday evening in Europe, it is already Saturday in Kiribati, and the transfer will be credited on Monday.

What to attach to a transfer to Tarawa, by sum

Up to $10,000, about 14,400 Australian dollars. The purpose is enough: family support, study, medical treatment.

$10,000-100,000. The bank will ask for a six-month statement and a document on the source of the money: a sale contract, an income certificate or a gift agreement.

From $100,000, about 143,900 Australian dollars. You will need the deal contract and a package on the source of wealth, covered in detail in the articles on proof of source of funds and sending a large sum abroad, and moving capital on the capital relocation page. A manager will work out what a transfer of such a sum will cost.

From Tarawa to Australia, New Zealand and neighbouring atolls

Money goes to Australia in the same currency, without exchange. For New Zealand Australian dollars are changed into New Zealand dollars. Tuvalu and Nauru are paid in Australian dollars, and the Marshall Islands in US dollars.
