How to send money to New Zealand in 2026: by bank transfer in 1-3 days to a 15-16 digit account
In 2026 money is sent to New Zealand by bank transfer to a 15-16 digit account, which large banks open before arrival. The tax number is obtained in advance: without it the bank withholds 45% of interest. A new resident pays no tax on most foreign income for 4 years, and deposits in local dollars are protected up to 100,000.
In short
- An account is opened before arrival, with a 15-16 digit number.
- Without a tax number, 45% of interest is withheld.
- A new resident pays no tax on most foreign income for 48 months.
- Investor visa: 6 months to transfer an investment from $2.8 million.
In detail
A transfer to New Zealand on 8 October 2026: 4 working routes
All 4 routes were checked on 8 October 2026, and sums are converted at 1.786 New Zealand dollars per US dollar. The country has no international account number: the sender's bank gives the 15-16 digit number and the recipient bank's international code.
| Route | Now | Currency credited | Time | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer from abroad | works | New Zealand dollars, or a currency to a foreign currency account | 1-3 business days | the 15-16 digit account number, the bank's international code, the recipient's name |
| Transfer to an account opened before arrival | works | New Zealand dollars | 1-3 business days | a visa and passport, a document check at a branch after arrival |
| Transfer to the deal lawyer's trust account | works | New Zealand dollars | under the contract | the contract, documents on the origin of the money |
| Money transfer system | works | New Zealand dollars | from a few minutes | the sender's and recipient's ID documents |
The country has no currency controls, and the New Zealand dollar floats freely. Money is held in it or in a foreign currency account in US dollars, euros, pounds and Australian dollars, and sent back abroad without permits.
Is the sender's bank asking again about the purpose of a transfer to the other side of the world? There are usually more options than it seems: a manager will check your case and suggest a route for the sum and timing.
A tax number and an account before the move: where to start
A New Zealand tax number is obtained from the tax authority before the first large transfer. Without it the bank withholds 45% of interest; with a number the rate is chosen by income, and without a choice 33% applies. The same number is needed to buy a home: without it the deal is not registered.
Large banks open an account for people moving even before they arrive on a visa, so money for the first months can be sent in advance. The account is fully usable after a document check at a branch in the first days after landing.

The first rent is paid from an account in the country: a landlord asks for no more than 2 weeks' rent in advance and a bond of no more than 4 weeks. Within 23 working days the landlord lodges the bond with the government tenancy service, and after moving out the money is returned from there straight to the tenant's account.
Since 1 July 2025 deposits in New Zealand dollars have been protected up to 100,000 ($56,000) per person at each bank. Foreign currency deposits are not covered, so money for living is kept in New Zealand dollars, and capital above the limit is spread across several banks. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand publishes the list of banks in the protection scheme on its website.
4 years without tax on foreign income for new residents
You become a tax resident after 183 days in the country in any 12 months or with a permanent home there. A new resident who has not lived here before or has not been a resident for 10 years pays no tax on most foreign income for 48 months: interest, dividends, rent from abroad. Income from work the person already does from New Zealand is not covered by this relief.
The country has no general capital gains tax, no gift or inheritance tax and no stamp duty. A gain is taxed only if a home is sold within 2 years of purchase.
So large transfers are planned around these 4 years: income from deposits and rent abroad comes in tax-free, and after 48 months it is taxed on the general scale. Since 31 July 2024 the scale starts at 10.5% up to 15,600 New Zealand dollars, then 17.5%, 30% and 33%, and 39% applies to income above 180,000 ($110,000). A manager will suggest how to spread transfers over the years and which papers to show a bank in New Zealand.
The investor visa: 6 months to transfer the investment
The Active Investor resident visa is granted for investing 5 million New Zealand dollars ($2.8 million) for 3 years in the growth category or 10 million ($5.6 million) for 5 years in the balanced category. After approval in principle the investor has 6 months to transfer the money to New Zealand and invest it, and immigration authorities give up to 6 more months on a request made before the deadline.
In the growth category the money goes straight into New Zealand companies; in the balanced category the list is wider: funds, listed shares, bonds. After 3 or 5 years, once the investment has served its term, the money can be withdrawn and sent out of the country.
What is transferred is the declared money or the proceeds from selling declared assets: from your own account, from a joint account with family members in the application, through a lawyer's trust account or a pension account in the investor's name. The money goes by a direct path, without intermediate accounts of other people: this way the authority sees that the same funds arrived as were stated in the application.
The visa terms are on the New Zealand residence permit page.
A home in New Zealand: who buys and how the money moves
Homes are bought by citizens, by residents after 12 months in the country and tax residence, and by citizens of Australia and Singapore. Since 6 March 2026 an investor visa holder can buy one home worth more than 5 million New Zealand dollars ($2.8 million) with consent before the contract, and a foreigner without a visa can buy a flat in a new large building under a developer's certificate.
The deposit and the price are paid into the deal lawyer's trust account: the lawyer holds the money until settlement, pays the balance to the seller and registers the transfer of title on the same day. The real estate agent's commission is paid by the seller, and the buyer pays for the lawyer and the building inspection. Before registration the buyer files a land transfer tax statement with their tax number, citizenship and visa.

An example: a house in Queenstown for 6 million New Zealand dollars ($3.4 million) bought by an investor visa holder. The consent fee is 2,040 New Zealand dollars ($1,200) if the house is already built, and the home's price does not count towards the visa investment: the money for it is sent on top of the investment. The deposit is usually 10% of the price, 600,000 New Zealand dollars ($340,000), and the balance goes to the lawyer before settlement day.
So that the deposit does not leave before the foreign investment office gives consent, we will suggest how best to send the money by stage of the deal. Prices and owner taxes are in the article on buying a flat in New Zealand, and properties on the property in New Zealand page.
We will help you send money to New Zealand
Mistakes cost more than fees: an investor visa investment sent through the account of a relative not in the application, a house deposit paid before consent, interest on an account without a tax number that loses 45%. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and timing, prepare documents on the origin of the money for the bank, the lawyer and immigration authorities and carry out the transfer through to crediting.
Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: the cost depends on the sum and the purpose of the transfer.
What papers to prepare for a transfer to New Zealand by sum
- Up to $10,000. The bank checks the name, the account number and the purpose: rent, a bond, the first weeks' expenses.
- $10,000-100,000. The bank asks for the sender's account statement and a document for the purpose: a lease, a university invoice, a donor's letter.
- From $100,000. The bank looks into the source of the whole capital: the sale of a flat or a business, an inheritance, savings over the years. For a visa the same documents are reviewed by immigration authorities, and for a home by the deal lawyer.
The general rules are in the articles on proof of source of funds and moving home sale proceeds abroad, and a plan for all your capital is on the capital relocation page.
From New Zealand onwards: Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States
Most money goes across the Tasman Sea: New Zealand citizens live and work in Australia without a visa, as a special visa is granted at the border on their passport. 2 other common destinations are London and the US West Coast.
- To Australia: work and housing in Sydney and Melbourne.
- To the United Kingdom: work experience in London after university.
- To the United States: study and work in California.
