Transfers from abroad came to $265.5 million in financial year 2025, and 4 out of 5 families receive them. Land in Tonga is leased for up to 99 years, the same for everyone, citizens included.

Money is sent to Tonga to an account at a bank in Nuku'alofa, through a money transfer system with crediting in minutes, or by a foreign bank card; the recipient sees the sum in pa'anga. For the kingdom this is the main source of family income: in financial year 2025 $265.5 million arrived from abroad, and $278.5 million is expected for 2026.

Family support in Tonga: 4 out of 5 households receive transfers

4 out of 5 families in Tonga receive transfers from abroad, and by the share of transfers in the economy the kingdom ranked second in the world in 2022. The money is sent by relatives working in New Zealand, Australia and the US, and it pays for school, medical care, repairing homes after storms and family celebrations.

The pa'anga is pegged to a basket of currencies, so it moves without sharp jumps, but every exchange costs money. It is more convenient to send straight in the currency you earn at work, New Zealand or Australian dollars or US dollars, and the recipient's bank will exchange the money into pa'anga. A transfer to an account needs the recipient's name, the account number, the name of the bank in Nuku'alofa and its international code.

On the outer islands, Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua, there are few bank branches, so for a relative there a money transfer system to an account or a phone wallet is more convenient: money arrives in minutes, and they pay with it at the nearest shop. Large sums for construction on these islands are more reliably sent by bank transfer to Nuku'alofa with a clear payment purpose.

Before holidays and the start of the school year there are more transfers, and it is better to send money a week before the date you need it. If you support your family every month, we will suggest how best to send it with a lower fee.

A land lease in Tonga for 99 years

Under the constitution, land in Tonga is held, not sold, to citizens and foreigners alike, so a house or hotel is built on a leased plot. The lease term including renewals is up to 99 years, and the contract is signed by the Minister of Lands after government consent. Government land is leased, or a plot from the estates of noble families: in both cases the term, the rent and the use of the plot are written into the contract, and the ministry enters it in the register.

A lease takes effect only after registration, so payments are tied to stages: a deposit to the plot holder on signing, and the rest after government consent and registration of the contract. A plot can also be sublet, or the lease right sold, with government consent.

For a foreigner this arrangement gives a clear calculation: the cost of the lease and construction is known in advance, and transfers follow the contract schedule. So that the payment to the plot holder arrives on time, check the transfer terms with a manager.

How much can be sent to Tonga and what to prepare

from $100,000the whole path of the money and the purpose of the investmenta contract for the sale of a home or business, an inheritance, dividends, a construction contract in Tonga

For construction or a hotel, sums quickly pass $100,000, and the sender's bank checks such a transfer longer than usual. Documents on the origin of the money are collected before the first payment. If a direct transfer is held up, there are usually more lawful options than it seems: a manager will pick one that works for your situation. How large transfers are arranged is on the capital relocation page.

We will help you send money to Tonga

Mistakes cost more than fees: a double exchange through pa'anga when supporting family, the whole lease payment before the contract is registered, construction without documents on the origin of the money. We will help you avoid them: we will choose a route for the sum and the sending country, prepare documents on the origin of the money, carry out the transfer through licensed partners and follow it through to crediting.

Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: they depend on the sum, the sending country and the purpose of the transfer.

From Tonga to where relatives work

Transfers back from Tonga go to the same places the money comes from: to New Zealand, to Australia and to the US, for children's study and relatives' expenses in their first months in a new place. Pa'anga are exchanged into the recipient country's currency at a bank in Nuku'alofa on the day of sending, and the money arrives in the account already in New Zealand or Australian dollars or US dollars.
