How to send money to Tunisia in 2026: dollars and euros to a foreign account or dinars for family

6 min read ·

Tunisia credits a transfer from abroad in 1-3 business days differently for two kinds of recipient: for a non-resident, dollars and euros stay in a foreign account without exchange; for a resident, they become dinars at the bank's rate. The payment goes to a 24-character international account number. In 2026 the bank will ask for the purpose, and from $10,000 for a statement or an income certificate.

Data for 2026. The Central Bank of Tunisia's average interbank rate for 7 October 2026 was 3.0073 dinars per dollar: in early October the dollar rose above 3 dinars.

A foreign account: currency or convertible dinars

The dinar is exchanged only inside the country, so for money from abroad Tunisian banks keep two kinds of non-resident accounts for any nationality. In a foreign currency account, money arrives and stays in dollars or euros. A convertible dinar account is kept in dinars, but the balance is freely exchanged back and transferred abroad.

Such accounts are topped up by a transfer from abroad, a transfer from another foreign account and interest; other credits go through with the central bank's consent. So money for a purchase or for living in the country first arrives in a foreign account, and exactly the sum needed for expenses is exchanged into dinars. More about the capital is on the Tunis page.

An investment in foreign currency and the transfer back under the 2016 law

Investment law 2016-71, article 9, allows an investor to transfer capital abroad in foreign currency under the currency rules. Central bank circular 2018-14 sets out the procedure: a non-resident's investment is paid by transfer from abroad or from their own foreign account in Tunisia, and income and proceeds from a sale or liquidation are later transferred back. This is how a stake in a company, fund units and a property purchase work.

The bank records such an investment with a declaration through the central bank's electronic system, and this record is the basis for the future transfer back. Planning to invest money in Tunisia? A manager will plan the path of the money there and back.

The international account number: 24 characters and the bank's 20 digits

Inside the country an account has 20 digits: 2 digits of the bank code, 3 digits of the branch, 13 digits of the number and 2 check digits. The international number is built from the same 20 digits by adding the country code and the digits 59 in front, 24 characters in all. The sender is given this number, the recipient's full name as in their passport and the bank's code for international transfers.

6.9 billion dinars in nine months from people working abroad

According to central bank figures, in January-September 2026 income from work abroad brought Tunisia $2.3 billion (6.9 billion dinars), 5% more than a year earlier. Such money arrives in families' dinar accounts.

Tax: a main home or 183 days a year

The income tax code, article 2, treats as a resident anyone whose main home is in Tunisia or who has spent 183 days or more in the country in a calendar year. A resident pays tax on all income, including income from abroad, taking double taxation agreements into account. A non-resident pays tax only on income from Tunisia, for example from renting out a flat.

A house by the sea in Sidi Bou Said: the governor's permit

A foreigner buys a flat or a house in Tunisia with the permission of the governor of the region where the property is. The procedure is set by a decree of 4 June 1957; without the permit the deal is not registered, so it is obtained as the first step.

A non-resident pays for the purchase in foreign currency from abroad or from their own foreign account, and under circular 2018-14 the sale proceeds are later transferred back. At the rate of 7 October 2026 a $150,000 house comes to 451,095 dinars.

Which documents a bank in Tunisia will ask for

Banks work under organic law 2015-26 on combating money laundering, as amended in 2019; the central bank supervises them, and reports on suspicious transactions go to the financial analysis commission at the central bank. In 2026 the amount of paperwork depends on the sum:

Transfer amountWhat the bank in Tunisia wants to knowDocument
Up to $10,000the purpose of the transferthe payment purpose: family support, rent, studies
$10,000 - $100,000where the sum came froma bank statement, an employment contract or an income certificate
From $100,000the whole path of the money and the dealthe sale contract for a previous home or business, a tax return, the governor's permit for the purchase

A file for a large sum is best gathered before the transfer, so that crediting goes through without repeated requests. A manager will prepare the papers to the bank's requirements, and countries for moving with capital are compared on the capital relocation page.

We will help you send money to Tunisia

Money sent straight to a dinar account instead of a foreign account, an investment without a declaration at the bank, a contract signed before the governor's permit: because of such details the money is later hard to return abroad. We will look at your goal, suggest an account and a transfer route, prepare the documents for the bank in Tunisia and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: everything depends on the sum, the currency and the purpose of the transfer to Tunisia.
