The account needs a 16-character tax code, a flat is paid through a notary, and the registration tax on a first home from a private seller is 2% of the cadastral value.

In detail

In 2026 money can be sent to Italy by bank transfer in euros to a 27-character Italian account: from European Union countries an instant transfer arrives in 10 seconds, from other countries usually in 1-5 business days. The Italian bank reports every transfer from abroad of 5,000 euros, about $5,600, or more to the tax office. Whether you can send right now depends on the sender's bank: a transfer goes through from banks that make euro payments and work with European Union banks.

Can you send money to Italy now: what depends on the sender's bank

The Italian side receives transfers from abroad under European Union rules: the bank checks the sender against its lists, and for a large sum asks about the purpose and the source of the money. The payment goes through when the sender's bank makes euro payments and works with European Union banks. If your bank needs a different route, working lawful options exist: tell a manager where you are sending from, and they will choose a lawful route.

A transfer to a private person in Italy: the account number and the name check

A transfer to a private person needs the recipient's 27-character account number and their name as it is recorded at the bank. Since 9 October 2025 European Union banks check the recipient's name against the account number before a euro transfer and tell the sender the result: a full match, a partial match, no match or a check is not possible. On a no-match warning the details are confirmed with the recipient before sending: an instant transfer leaves at once and for good.

A transfer to an Italian bank card is a transfer to its account: the recipient takes from the app the 27-character number of the account the card is issued on, and after crediting the money can be spent from the card straight away.

Transfers from countries outside the European Union go through correspondent banks, and the name check works differently for them: the Italian bank checks the details on crediting. So the details are obtained from the recipient in writing rather than copied from someone else's words: that way the money arrives the first time and without extra correspondent bank fees.

Why an Italian bank asks about a transfer from $5,600

Since 2021 Italian banks, the post office and other payment providers have reported to the Revenue Agency every transfer by a private person from or to abroad of 5,000 euros, about $5,600, or more. The threshold used to be 15,000 euros. Linked transactions are reported too: if one sum is split into several transfers, they are counted together. This is tax monitoring of money flows, not suspicion of anything: on the basis of this information the tax office checks whether an Italian resident has declared foreign income and assets.

For the recipient this means one thing: the tax office will see a transfer from $5,600, so the payment purpose and the documents on the source of the money must match what they show in their tax return. Separately, the bank may ask about the source of the money under anti-money laundering rules, and there is no threshold there: the bank decides from the client's overall picture. Is the bank asking you to explain where the money came from? A manager will tell you which documents an Italian bank will accept.

Documents are covered in detail in the article on proof of source of funds.

A transfer to relatives in Italy: help, study, a gift

The bank credits small transfers to relatives, such as help or payment for study or rent, as regular ones, but it is better to state plainly in the payment purpose what the money is for. For a large gift Italy has a gift tax if the giver is an Italian resident: to a spouse and relatives in the direct line 4% on the sum above $1,200,000 (1 million euros) per recipient, to brothers and sisters 6% above $120,000 (100,000 euros), to other relatives 6%, and to everyone else 8%. The tax office may treat regular large receipts from one person as income, so their link with the family is worth confirming with documents.

Before a transfer to Italy: the tax code and a basic account

A large sum is easier to send to your own Italian account, and that requires a 16-character tax code: it is obtained in person at the Revenue Agency by appointment or through an Italian consulate abroad. A foreigner's first account is usually opened on a visit to a branch: identity is confirmed remotely only with an Italian digital identity or a qualified electronic signature.

For anyone legally present in the European Union, a bank must offer a basic account and respond to the application within 10 business days. A non-resident's account is opened for a clear purpose, such as buying a home, study or expenses in the country, and a manager will check which bank suits your case. Stamp duty is $40 (34.20 euros) a year, and only if the average balance is above $5,600 (5,000 euros); deposits are insured up to $120,000 (100,000 euros) per depositor at one bank.

Money for buying a flat in Italy

A flat in Italy is paid from an account through a notary, who checks the property, withholds the taxes and registers the transfer of ownership, so it is worth getting the money into an Italian account before the date of the deal. With a private seller the registration tax is calculated on the cadastral value: 2% for a first home and 9% for a second one, plus two taxes of $60 (50 euros) each; with a developer, VAT of 4% or 10% is paid instead. Money for the deal is easier to send in advance in one payment with a purpose that names the contract and the address of the flat: the notary and the bank see the purpose at once. Details of the deal are on the property in Italy page and in the article on buying a flat in Italy.

How much can be sent to Italy without questions from the bank

Data for 2026.

AmountWhat happensWhat to prepare
up to $5,600 (5,000 euros)a regular transfer, no information goes to the tax officecorrect details and the recipient's name
$5,600-120,000the bank reports the transfer to the Revenue Agency and may ask about the source of the moneystatements, an income certificate, a property sale contract
from $120,000 (100,000 euros)above the deposit insurance limit at one bank; a full checka source of funds package and agreement with the bank before the transfer

$120,000 is also the deposit insurance limit at one Italian bank. A transfer of this size is planned as a separate project: the route, the bank, the documents and the tax consequences are agreed before the first payment. How such sums move between countries is in the capital relocation section.

The tax office sees a transfer to Italy, so the documents must match from the start

Italy receives transfers under European Union rules. Mistakes cost more than fees: a recipient's name that did not match in the check, a transfer from a bank that does not make euro payments, a large sum without documents on its source, and money for a deal that did not reach the account in time for the visit to the notary. Murblz support removes these risks: we choose a lawful transfer route for the sender's country and bank, help obtain the tax code, gather the source of funds package and see the transfer through to crediting.

The cost of support depends on the sum, the sending country and the purpose of the transfer; a manager will work it out in the chat.

A transfer to Italy from the European Union: instant and at no extra cost

From any European Union country money reaches Italy by instant euro transfer. Since 9 January 2025 euro area banks receive such transfers around the clock, since 9 October 2025 they send them, and an instant euro transfer costs no more than a regular one. The money arrives in 10 seconds at weekends and on holidays just as on weekdays.

Before sending, the bank shows whether the recipient's name matches the account number, so a mistake is visible before the money leaves. This is the most convenient way to pay rent, tuition or a deposit for a flat: the landlord or the university sees the money at the same moment, and the transfer statement confirms the payment at once. We will suggest the best way to send money to Italy from your country: ask a manager about the transfer terms.

Tax for an Italian resident and regimes for new residents

A transfer to Italy is not taxed as such. Tax depends on the recipient's status: an Italian resident pays tax on worldwide income and reports foreign accounts and assets in the tax return, while a non-resident pays only on Italian income. A retiree who moves from abroad to a small town in southern Italy can use a 7% rate on all foreign income for 10 years if they have not lived in Italy for the last 5 years; for people moving with large capital there is a separate flat tax for new residents. Rates are on the taxes in Italy page, and ways to move on the Italian residence permit page.

Onward from Italy: France, Switzerland and other neighbours

Inside the European Union money leaves Italy by instant euro transfer. The bank checks an outgoing transfer abroad the same way as an incoming one: from 5,000 euros it passes information about it to the Revenue Agency. Most often money goes on from Italy to the neighbouring countries:

All countries and routes for large sums are in the capital relocation section.
