How to send money to Slovenia in 2026: euros in 10 seconds, a gift to relatives and paying for a home

9 min read ·

Slovenia has been in the euro area since 2007: a payment from Germany or Italy reaches Ljubljana in 10 seconds, from Serbia or Turkey in 1-3 business days. The key feature of 2026 is the gift return: over $5,600 from one donor in 12 months is declared within 15 days, and the seller pays the 2% home tax.

In detail

Slovenia has used the euro since 2007, so money from Germany, Italy or Austria arrives there by instant payment in 10 seconds, and from Serbia, Turkey or Kazakhstan by international transfer in 1-3 business days, to a 19-character account. The country's main difference is the gift return: over $5,600 (5,000 euros) from one donor within 12 months the recipient declares to the tax office within 15 days.

An instant transfer to Slovenia: 10 seconds and a name check

Slovenia has been in the euro area since 2007, so all EU rules on euro payments apply to it. Since 9 January 2025 Slovenian banks have accepted instant transfers around the clock, and since 9 October 2025 the sender's bank checks the recipient's name against the account number before sending, and such a transfer costs no more than an ordinary one.

If the name in the payment does not match the owner's name, the bank shows a warning before the money is debited. So the recipient's name is written as it is recorded at the Slovenian bank, in Latin letters from the passport, with no abbreviations.

From countries outside the EU money goes through correspondent banks in 1-3 business days, and the Slovenian bank credits it in euros at its own rate. It is better for the sender to cover the correspondent banks' fees in full; then exactly the amount sent arrives in Ljubljana.

The procedure for sending money is set by the country where it is now, not by Slovenia. If your bank does not send payments to Slovenia directly, a manager will choose a legal route from your country: a way is found for difficult directions too.

A cash gift in Slovenia: a return within 15 days

Children, adopted children, a spouse or partner, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law and a stepchild receive a gift tax-free: this is the first class under the inheritance and gift tax law. Money up to $5,600 (5,000 euros) from one donor within 12 months is neither taxed nor declared.

If the amount is larger, the recipient files a return with the Financial Administration within 15 days, even when they are in the first class and the tax is zero. The tax office issues a decision within 30 days, and any tax due is paid within 30 days of the decision.

Who receives the giftTax rate in Slovenia
Children, a spouse or partner, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, a stepchild0%, a return from $5,600 (5,000 euros)
Parents, brothers and sistersfrom 5% to 14% on a scale by amount
Grandparentsfrom 8% to 17%
Other recipientsfrom 12% to 39%

The scale under the inheritance and gift tax law was checked on 8 October 2026.

Hence Slovenia's main feature: an adult child receives money from parents tax-free, while parents whom children help with money are in the second class and pay from 5%. Help for parents is easier to plan in small sums of up to $5,600 a year from each child or to arrange as payment of specific expenses.

The payment purpose states the aim: a gift to a son, payment for study, a transfer of own savings. A deed of gift for a large sum is kept together with the sender's statement; it is needed both for the return and for the Slovenian bank.

Mistakes cost more than fees: the recipient's name not as at the bank, so the instant transfer stops at the check, a gift over 5,000 euros with no return within 15 days, help for parents in one large sum at the second-class rate, money for a flat with no statements along the path of the money. We will help you avoid them: we choose a legal transfer route from your country, prepare documents on the origin of the money for the Slovenian bank and the notary and carry out the transfer through licensed partners until it is credited.

Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: the calculation depends on the amount, the country the money comes from and the purpose of the transfer.

Buying a flat in Slovenia: 2% tax and a Slovenian tax number

2% of the price is the tax on the transfer of title to a home: by law the seller pays it, but the contract may shift the tax to the buyer. The return is filed within 15 days of signing, and without a certificate of payment the notary does not certify the signatures and the title is not entered in the register. A new-build flat bought from a developer is subject to value added tax instead of these 2%.

The buyer needs a Slovenian tax number: a foreigner gets it with a form at any Financial Administration office, in person or through a representative with a power of attorney. Citizens of the EU, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the European Free Trade Association buy homes on the general terms, others by a Ministry of Justice decision on reciprocity or through a Slovenian company.

Money for a flat goes by transfer from your own account, and statements covering the whole path of the money are prepared before the deposit: the seller's Slovenian bank and the notary look at where the amount came from. Buying a flat in Ljubljana or on the coast? A manager will draw up a transfer schedule around the dates of the deposit, the tax payment and the signing at the notary.

Papers on money from selling a home in another country are covered in moving home sale proceeds abroad, and moving to Slovenia in Slovenia residence permit and a residence permit for retirees.

Interest, deposits and income for living in Slovenia

$120,000 (100,000 euros) per depositor at one bank is protected by the Slovenian deposit guarantee, so money from selling a flat is kept in accounts at two banks until the next purchase if the sum is larger.

A Slovenian resident pays tax on worldwide income on a scale of 16% to 50%, while deposit interest, dividends and rent are taxed at 25%. A transfer of your own savings to Slovenia is not counted as income. A residence permit requires income from $570 (507.43 euros) a month per person, and a statement of regular receipts proves it better than a certificate.

A large transfer to Slovenia: what the bank will ask

A Slovenian bank accepts a transfer of any amount, and its list of questions grows in steps. Checked on 8 October 2026:
