How to send money to Slovakia in 2026: euros in seconds from the euro area and in 1-3 business days from other countries
Slovakia taxes neither the purchase of a flat nor gifts, and its financial transaction tax does not touch personal accounts. In 2026 euros from the EU arrive in seconds and from other countries in 1-3 business days, a notary holds the money for a flat until registration, and a temporary residence permit needs 3,542.64 euros ($4,000) in the account.
Money is sent to Slovakia in euros to a Slovak account with a 24-character number: from euro area countries an instant transfer arrives in seconds, from other countries in 1-3 business days. A flat in Slovakia is bought with no property transfer tax; the buyer pays only the fee for registering the title - 100 euros ($120), or 50 euros ($60) when filed electronically. Gifts have not been taxed in Slovakia since 2004, and transfers from an individual's personal account are not subject to the financial transaction tax.
What works on 8 October 2026. An instant transfer in euros from the euro area - in seconds, around the clock; an ordinary transfer from Europe - up to 1 business day; an international transfer from other countries - 1-3 business days in euros or dollars; payment for a flat - held in custody by a notary until the title is registered; a gift to relatives - by transfer to an account, tax-free. Dollars are calculated at the European Central Bank rate on 7 October 2026, 1.1177 per euro, rounded up.
Euros to a Slovak account: 24 characters and instant transfers
Slovakia adopted the euro on 1 January 2009, and its banks work under the common euro area rules: they accept and send instant transfers around the clock, charge no more for them than for an ordinary transfer, and check the recipient's name against the account before sending. A Slovak account number has 24 characters: the country code, two check digits, four digits of the bank code, six digits of the prefix and ten digits of the account itself.

Under the payment services law, everyone who lives legally in the European Union has the right to an account with basic functions: a card, transfers, salary credits. Slovak banks open an account with a passport, and for a residence permit a Slovak bank statement is the most convenient document on money for living. We will carry the money to this account through licensed partners until it is credited and prepare documents on the origin of funds for the bank in advance.
From countries without the euro there are two routes. You can send euros: then the sender's bank exchanges the money, and exactly the stated amount arrives in the Slovak account. You can send dollars: the Slovak bank will credit them to a dollar account with no exchange or convert them into euros at its own rate on the day they arrive. Deposits at one Slovak bank are protected by the Deposit Protection Fund up to 100,000 euros ($120,000) per person.
We will advise how best to send money to Slovakia: which currency to send in, which bank gets the payment there faster and what to put in the purpose.
The financial transaction tax: a personal account is exempt
Since 1 April 2025 Slovakia has had a financial transaction tax under Act No. 279/2024: 0.4% of a payment, but no more than 40 euros ($45) per payment. Only companies pay it. Individuals' personal accounts are not taxed, and sole traders without a company have been exempt since 1 January 2026. So money for living, rent and buying a flat is best kept in a personal account.
If you set up a company in Slovakia for a residence permit, count transfers from its account with the 0.4% tax: on a payment of 5,000 euros it is 20 euros ($25), on a payment from 10,000 euros - 40 euros. Working without a company is covered in self-employed in Slovakia.
A flat in Slovakia with no purchase tax: the money held by a notary
The property transfer tax in Slovakia was abolished in 2005, and foreigners buy flats and houses on the general terms. The buyer pays the fee for registering the title at the land registry: 100 euros ($120) on paper or 50 euros ($60) when filed electronically. The registry decides within 30 days, and an expedited decision within 15 days costs 300 euros ($340).

The price of the flat is usually transferred into a notary's custody: the notary holds the money in their account until the land registry enters the buyer in the register, and only then passes it to the seller. If the registration does not take place, the money goes back to the buyer. For a flat at 200,000 euros ($230,000) there is no purchase tax at all: the buyer pays the registry fee and the notary's fee for holding the money. A manager will advise when to send the money to the notary and which statements to prepare for the bank.
Gifts and money for family: no tax in Slovakia
Slovakia abolished gift and inheritance tax on 1 January 2004. Under the income tax law a gift is not part of taxable income, except gifts linked to the recipient's business or work. So money from parents, children and other relatives arrives in a Slovak account with no tax and no return, for any amount.

With a large gift the bank will still ask where the money comes from, so the transfer is accompanied by a deed of gift and the donor's statement. Money that parents send to adult children to buy a flat is documented the same way: the deed of gift will be useful to both the bank and the notary.
We will help you send money to Slovakia
Mistakes cost more than fees: money for living routed through a company account with the 0.4% tax, the price of a flat sent to the seller before the title is registered, a large gift with no deed of gift and a statement for a residence permit from the wrong bank. We will help you avoid them: we will choose a transfer route and the order of steps up to filing the documents, gather documents on the origin of the money and make the flat payment through a notary exactly in time for registration.
Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: much depends on the amount, the purpose of the transfer and your status in Slovakia.
A residence permit in Slovakia and money in the account
Since 1 July 2026 the subsistence minimum in Slovakia has been 295.22 euros ($330) a month. For a temporary residence permit you need 12 such minimums for living - 3,542.64 euros ($4,000) in the applicant's account. For a residence permit through business the money is placed in a business account: 5,904.40 euros ($6,600) for a sole trader, 29,522 euros ($33,000) for a company director. The procedure is in Slovakia residence permit.
A person becomes a Slovak tax resident after spending 183 days in the country in a year or having a permanent home here. Transferring your savings is not taxed; income is. Inheritance in Slovakia is not taxed either: this tax was abolished together with gift tax, so a flat or a deposit from parents passes to children with no tax costs.
What a Slovak bank will ask for at different transfer amounts
Up to $10,000. The bank needs the payment purpose and a clear link to the recipient: rent, study, help for family.
From $10,000 to $100,000. The bank asks for a 6-month statement and a document on the source: a sale contract, an income certificate, a deed of gift.
From $100,000. You need a pack on the origin of the money over several years and the contract the transfer is for, for example a flat purchase contract with notary custody. How to put such a pack together is explained in proof of source of funds and sending large sums abroad, and a large sum is conveniently moved as a capital relocation - from the capital relocation page. Tell a manager how much you are sending and from where, and they will suggest the order of steps.
