Moving to the UK: entry, first 30 days, 3-month budget
Russian citizens need a visa even for a short trip, and a long-term visa on a specific ground to live there. The main routes: a skilled worker visa sponsored by a licensed employer with a salary from £41,700 a year, about $55,200; a global talent visa for recognised specialists, fee £766, about $1,020; an innovator founder visa, fee £1,357, about $1,800; family of a British citizen with a couple's income from £29,000 a year. The investor visa is closed.
- Before the trip. An employer's sponsorship or an endorsement for talent or founder, the visa application, the health surcharge for the whole visa term.
- Days 1-30. Entry, an eVisa in your online account instead of a card, registering with a doctor in the public health system.
- Days 30-90. A UK bank account at your address, a National Insurance number for work, council tax registration, a lease.
| Item for 3 months | Per person |
|---|---|
| One-bedroom flat in London outside the centre, 3 months plus deposit | ~$8,360-9,160 |
| Living costs without rent | ~$3,690-4,290 |
| Total | from $13,000 |
Visa and health surcharges are extra and depend on the visa type and term. In central London a one-bedroom flat costs about $2,740-2,850 a month, while rents in Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol are noticeably lower. We calculate a family budget in the chat.
The United Kingdom in brief
The United Kingdom is an island state in north-west Europe made up of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It has about 69 million people, and its capital, London, is one of the world's leading financial centres. Since 31 January 2020 the country has been outside the European Union with its own immigration rules, and the currency is the pound sterling, about $1.32 per pound in 2026. It offers strong universities and schools, English law, deep capital markets and a large Russian-speaking community.
The UK suits professionals with a job offer, academics, artists and tech founders, as well as families choosing a British education. It suits people looking for residence for passive capital less well: the investor visa closed in 2022.
How to move in 2026
- Employment - the Skilled Worker visa with a licensed sponsor employer; since 22 July 2025 the general salary threshold is £41,700 a year, about $55,200, and the role must be at degree level.
- Global Talent visa - for established or promising academics, digital technology specialists and artists; no employer needed, fee £766, about $1,020. Details are on the page Global Talent visa.
- Innovator Founder visa - for a new innovative business endorsed by an approved body; there is no minimum investment, and the visa fee from abroad is £1,357, about $1,800. Details are on the page Innovator Founder visa.
- Family - the spouse of a British citizen or settled person needs a couple income of at least £29,000 a year, about $38,400.
- Investor visa - closed to new applicants on 17 February 2022; what remains for its holders is covered on the page UK residence by investment.
Long visas also carry the immigration health surcharge of £1,035, about $1,370, a year per adult, paid upfront for the whole visa. We handle visa selection, documents and filing end to end.
Settlement and citizenship
Indefinite leave to remain is currently granted after 5 years on most work visas, and after 3 years for Global Talent holders in some fields. The fee since 8 April 2026 is £3,226, about $4,300, per person. In November 2025 the government proposed raising the standard period to 10 years; as of early October 2026 the new periods are not in the rules, but they are meant to apply to everyone who has not yet settled, so it pays to apply as soon as you qualify.
Naturalisation is possible 12 months after settlement, and for the spouse of a Briton straight after it with 3 years of residence. You need the Life in the UK test at £50 and intermediate English, and the application and ceremony cost £1,839, about $2,500. Dual citizenship is allowed. Details are on the page British citizenship.
Taxes
The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Income tax in England is 0% up to £12,570 a year, then 20%, 40% and 45%, with a separate scale in Scotland; employees also pay 8% National Insurance. Corporation tax is 19% to 25%, VAT is 20% and capital gains tax is 18-24%. Since April 2025 the old regime for non-domiciled foreigners has been abolished: new residents who have not been UK tax resident for 10 years pay no UK tax on foreign income for 4 years. Inheritance tax at 40% now depends on how many years a person has lived in the country.
Residence is determined by several tests, and with family, a home or work in the country 16-46 days a year can be enough. The double tax treaty with Russia has not been applied since April 2025. All rates are on the page taxes in the UK.
Property
Foreigners buy homes without restrictions. Stamp duty is paid on a scale, with a 2% surcharge for non-residents and a 5% surcharge for additional homes; on a £1.5 million house the duty exceeds £90,000, about $119,000. A property purchase alone gives no right of residence. We source and check properties on the page property in the UK.
Business and accounts
A limited company is registered online with Companies House, usually within a day, for a £100 fee, about $140. Since November 2025 directors and owners must verify their identity with the registry. Registering a company gives no right of residence, and banks scrutinise foreign owners and the source of funds. We help with company registration and a business account.
Cost of living
- Rent in London - a one-bedroom flat in the centre costs about $2,740-2,850 a month, outside the centre about $2,090-2,290.
- Costs excluding rent in London - about $1,230-1,430 a month for one person and $4,240-5,040 for a family of four.
- Other cities - rents in Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol are well below London.
- Schools - state schools are free for the children of foreigners on visas; private schools cost tens of thousands of pounds a year, and since January 2025 their fees carry 20% VAT.
Where to live
- London - jobs, finance, the best schools and airports, and the most expensive option. More in the London guide.
- Manchester - England's second business centre with universities and tech companies, and cheaper housing.
- Edinburgh - Scotland's capital with a university, finance and tourism; the Scottish income tax scale is higher for middle and high incomes.
- Cambridge and Oxford - universities, science and biotech, with expensive housing.
- Bristol - engineering and aerospace in the west of England.
Practicalities
- Entry. Citizens of visa-free countries, including the European Union, need an electronic travel authorisation at $22 (16 pounds); Russian citizens need a visitor visa.
- Healthcare. Long-visa holders use the National Health Service after paying the health surcharge, but waits for specialists are long, so many take private insurance.
- Climate. Mild and rainy, without severe frost or heat.
- Banks. A UK bank account is opened once you have the visa and an address.
Who the UK suits
Pros: English, strong universities and schools, English law, a large labour and capital market, and dual citizenship. Cons: high prices and taxes, no visa for passive investment, and the path to settlement may stretch to 10 years. The UK suits professionals, academics and tech founders, as well as families building their life around a British education. Write in the chat and we will choose a visa for your profile and work out the moving budget.
