What you can get in Argentina
Argentina in brief
Argentina is the second-largest country in South America, stretching from the tropics in the north to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego in the south. The 2022 census counted about 46 million people, a third of them in greater Buenos Aires. The economy rests on agriculture - soy, beef and wheat - on oil and gas from the Vaca Muerta field, lithium and software. After the 2024 reforms inflation fell markedly, and in April 2025 most currency controls for individuals were lifted. The language is Spanish, and the currency the Argentine peso.
Argentina suits those who want a second passport without investment and without giving up their citizenship, families planning a birth, and remote workers who value a European lifestyle and costs that are modest by European standards. It suits less those seeking low taxes and a predictable economy.
How to move in 2026
| Route | Main condition | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Digital nomad visa | remote work for clients abroad, no income threshold, fees from $22 | 180 days plus 180 |
| Residence permit | work, study, pension, income from abroad or family | 3-5 months to process |
| Birth of a child | a child born in Argentina is a citizen by birthright | residence for the parents through the child |
| Citizenship | 2 years living in the country, a federal court decision, fees from $70 | processing usually over a year |
On 30 June 2026 the National Electoral Chamber declared decree 366/2025, which had transferred citizenship to the migration service, null and void, and citizenship cases are again handled by federal courts. Citizenship by investment was announced on 2 October 2026, but applications are not yet accepted. Argentina allows dual citizenship, and its passport gives visa-free access to 169 countries.
Taxes
A foreigner becomes tax resident after 12 months of permanent residence in the country. Residents pay income tax on worldwide income on a progressive scale from 5% to 35%, plus an annual personal assets tax on worldwide assets, whose rates are being reduced step by step after the 2024 reform. VAT is 21%, and corporate tax 25% to 35%. More on the page about Argentine tax residency.
Property
Foreigners freely buy flats and houses in cities; the deal is executed by a notary and registered in the provincial property registry. Home prices are quoted and paid in dollars, usually in cash or by transfer at signing. In Buenos Aires the supply of rental flats grew after strict rent controls were lifted in 2023. Cost of living
As inflation fell, dollar prices rose, and Buenos Aires is no longer as cheap as a few years ago, but cafés, transport, sport and services are still cheaper than in Western Europe. Public hospitals and schools are free, and most newcomers take out a private subscription health plan. Imported electronics and cars are expensive because of duties.
Where to live
- Buenos Aires. The capital with European architecture; newcomers choose Palermo, Recoleta, Belgrano and Núñez.
- Nordelta and the northern suburbs. Gated communities with houses, lakes and schools, popular with families.
- Córdoba. The second city, with universities and tech companies and cheaper housing than the capital.
- Mendoza. Wine country at the foot of the Andes, sunny and calm.
- Bariloche. Patagonian mountains and lakes, with skiing in winter.
Practicalities
- Entry. Russian citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
- Documents. After receiving residence a foreigner gets an identity card, used to open a bank account and pay taxes.
- Language. Spanish with a local accent; English is mainly known in business circles in Buenos Aires.
- Climate. Seasons are opposite to the northern hemisphere: Buenos Aires has hot summers and mild winters.
- Safety. Tourist areas of the capital are calm, but pickpocketing and phone theft happen.
- Getting there. Buenos Aires has direct flights to Madrid, Rome, Miami and South American capitals.
