How to send money to the USA in 2026: dollars by routing number in 1-5 business days

How money reaches the USA in October 2026
In October 2026 3 routes work into the USA, and for a large sum the main one is a bank transfer to your own account at a US bank.
| Method | Status on 8 October 2026 | Currency | Amount limit | Time | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer to your own account | works | dollars | no legal cap | 1-5 business days | bank routing number, account number, international bank code, name as held by the bank |
| State-licensed money transfer service | works | dollars | service limits | per the service terms | the recipient's passport or account |
| Transfer to a card through a transfer service | works | dollars | service and bank limits | per the service terms | card number; for a large sum, a transfer to an account |
An incoming international transfer at major US banks costs $15-16, plus correspondent bank fees. If the account is in dollars, send dollars: a transfer in another currency is converted by the receiving bank at its own rate. The rules of the sending country are covered in sending large sums abroad, and the limits in how much money you can send abroad, and we will suggest the best route for your amount and the bank to use.
Routing number and international code: US account details
A routing number is 9 digits identifying a US bank, and for an international transfer the bank often gives a separate number, not the one printed on cheques. Along with it the sender needs the account number, the recipient bank's international code and the name exactly as the bank holds it.

If a correspondent bank sits between the banks, its international code also goes into the payment; without it the transfer takes longer. That is why the details are first checked with a payment of a few hundred dollars, and then the main sum follows the same route.
Inside the USA money between your own accounts at different banks moves by same-day wire or by a regular interbank transfer in 1-3 business days. So a large sum is easy to receive at one bank first and then spread across others to stay within deposit insurance.
Sending money to a US account: passport only, no Social Security number
US law does not require the 9-digit Social Security number for an account: a US bank opens an account for a foreigner on a passport and must establish the name, date of birth, address and document number. Major banks open one for a non-resident during an in-person branch visit, while online they ask for a Social Security number and a US address.
Timing and terms in 2026:
| Who opens the account | How fast | What matters to the bank |
|---|---|---|
| Resident with a green card or work visa | fastest | Social Security number, US address |
| Foreigner with a visa and a US address | in one branch visit | passport with visa, a second photo ID, proof of address |
| Non-resident without a US address | longest | passport, tax number of their own country, source of funds, minimum balance |
On opening, a non-resident gives the bank a non-resident tax form: it confirms foreign status and frees interest from the 30% withholding. The form is valid until the end of the third year after signing, and on moving to the USA you tell the bank within 30 days and file a tax resident form. For a company account the bank also asks about the beneficial owners.
Deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation: $250,000 per depositor at one bank for each account category - individual, joint and retirement are counted separately, and citizenship does not matter. A finance app is not a bank: the insurance applies when the money sits at an insured partner bank. A manager will advise how best to send money for your status.
We will help you send money to the USA
Mistakes cost more than fees: a bank visit without the right documents and no account at the end of it, a wrong routing number and a returned payment minus fees, a large sum with no source-of-funds documents, a missed Form 3520 with a penalty of up to 25% of the gift. We will help you avoid them: we choose the transfer route for your status, prepare the source-of-funds documents and check the route and details with a trial payment.
Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: everything depends on the amount, the bank and your situation.
No currency controls: money into the USA and back
The USA has no currency controls in 2026: you can receive and send out any amount with no mandatory sale of currency and no permits. An outgoing transfer goes through the same bank checks as an incoming one.
From 1 January 2026 a 1% tax applies only to transfers from the USA that are not paid from an account or by card, for example by money order or cashier's cheque. A transfer from your own account or by card is not taxed, so money also leaves from the account. Dollars go without conversion, and if the recipient's account is in another currency, their bank converts it.
Moving to the USA on a work visa with $80,000: the route step by step
A professional moves to the USA on a work visa with family and $80,000 in savings. The money follows 5 steps.
- Account - opened at a branch visit with passport, visa and proof of address; the tax form is filed straight away.
- Test payment - a few hundred dollars to check the routing number and the correspondent bank.
- Main sum - one transfer in dollars with statements showing the source of funds.
- Social Security number - after starting work; it is given to the bank, and the non-resident form is replaced with a resident form.
- Spreading the money - up to $250,000 at one bank per account category, so the whole $80,000 is insured.
This way the money lands in the account in the first weeks, and your tax status at the bank changes along with yours: interest is untaxed while you are a non-resident and taxed on the scale once you become a resident.
A gift from parents abroad: Form 3520 and gift rules
The recipient of a gift in the USA pays no tax, but a US tax resident who receives more than $100,000 in a year from a foreign individual, or more than $20,573 from a foreign company, files Form 3520 by 15 April of the following year. The penalty for not filing is 5% of the gift for each month, up to 25%.
US gift tax is paid by the giver, not the recipient; in 2026 you can give $19,000 to one person a year tax-free. An unmarried resident living in the USA files Form 8938 with the return if foreign assets exceed $50,000 on 31 December or $75,000 on any day of the year; for spouses the thresholds are $100,000 and $150,000. Accounts back home do not need to be closed after the move, they are shown in the return.
A non-resident foreigner who receives money in the USA files neither Form 3520 nor Form 8938. To know which forms your family needs after the move, ask a manager before the first transfer.
$10,000, $100,000, $1,050,000: what a US bank will ask
At 3 levels of amount a US bank asks for different things, and the law gives no closed list of documents: the bank sets the depth of the check by its risk assessment.
Amount levels in 2026:
| Amount | What the bank asks | What to attach |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $10,000 | payment purpose and identity | passport, non-resident tax form, a clear payment reference |
| $10,000-100,000 | where the money comes from | statements, tax return, income certificate; a gift agreement if parents are paying |
| From $100,000 to $1,050,000 | the whole chain of funds and the purpose: an apartment, a green card, a deposit | property sale contract, inheritance documents, statements for every step of the transfer |
All amounts are in US dollars, as US laws and the tax service state them; the 2026 thresholds follow the tax service document adjusted for inflation.
A US bank asks for documents in other languages with an English translation, and the amount and dates in them must match the payment. Is the bank asking where the money comes from? A manager will advise which document pack a US bank accepts without repeat questions. What goes into such a pack is covered in proof of source of funds, and the legal routes for large capital are on the capital relocation page.
An apartment in the USA: escrow account and 15% withholding
In 2026 a property purchase in the USA is paid by bank transfer to the escrow account of the company that checks the title and handles the settlement, or to the account of the closing attorney. The money is moved in advance to your own US account or sent from abroad with source-of-funds documents.
When a foreigner sells property, the buyer withholds 15% of the price towards the seller's tax; at a price up to $300,000, if the buyer will live in the home, nothing is withheld, and any excess is refunded to the seller through the tax return. Keep this in mind from day one: money from a future sale will not arrive in full until the return is filed. The owner pays property tax every year, and the rate is set by the state and county, so check it before buying.

Investor green card: $800,000 and $1,050,000
In 2026 an investor green card is granted for investing $1,050,000, or $800,000 in high-unemployment areas and infrastructure projects. From 1 January 2027 the amounts will be indexed, and the regional center programme runs until 30 September 2027.
The investor proves the lawful source of funds along the whole chain, so the money path is documented from the first transfer: sale contract, statements, tax returns. The investment must work in the project rather than sit in an account, so money is sent under the contract with the project after its documents are checked. US tax resident: the 183-day formula
A US tax resident is a green card holder or someone who spent at least 31 days in the country in the current year and 183 days over 3 years, counting all days of the current year, a third of last year's days and a sixth of the year before. 120 days a year for 3 years in a row gives 180 days, and the person does not become a resident.
| Operation or income | Tax in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Transferring your own money to the USA | none |
| Transfer from the USA abroad from an account or by card | none |
| Interest on a non-resident's deposit | 0% with a non-resident tax form at the bank |
| Interest on a tax resident's deposit | 10% to 37% on the federal scale plus state tax |
| A gift from a foreigner | the recipient does not pay |

Sending your own money to the USA is not taxed: tax is paid on income - interest, profit, salary - not on capital brought in. Besides federal tax, most states levy their own income tax, and the choice of state to live in changes the final rate. More on the taxes in the USA page.
Where money goes from the USA: Canada, Israel, Kazakhstan
In 2026 money leaves the USA freely: an outgoing transfer from an account is not taxed, and the bank checks it the same way as an incoming one. It most often goes to 3 countries.
- To Canada: a neighbouring market for study and moving, transfers in Canadian dollars.
- To Israel: family transfers and buying a home.
- To Kazakhstan: money for family and to your own account by individual identification number.
