The dinar rate in Kuwait: a basket of currencies instead of the dollar
1 Kuwaiti dinar costs 3.22 dollars on 9 October 2026, the most expensive currency unit in the world. Since May 2007 the dinar has been pegged to a basket of the currencies of the country's main trading partners, whose composition the central bank does not disclose; from 2003 to 2007 the rate was held to the dollar.
So the rate to the dollar floats slightly, unlike in the neighbouring Gulf states. Rent or salary is more convenient to set in dinars and send in dollars with a small margin for the rate. In September 2026 the central bank kept the key rate at 3.5%, and Kuwait has no personal income tax.

The bank opens an account for the recipient with the civil ID card issued together with the residence permit. Both salary and money from abroad arrive in this account, and a dollar account alongside is convenient for savings. The residence permit is issued under the 2024 law on the residence of foreigners, which replaced the 1959 law, and it is kept as long as trips abroad are shorter than 6 months in a row.
Transfers by phone number within Kuwait: up to 1,000 dinars at a time
1,000 dinars ($3,300) is the limit for one transfer by phone number in the central bank's instant payment system. Up to 3,000 dinars ($9,700) or 10 transfers can be sent a day, up to 20,000 dinars ($65,000) a month, and the minimum transfer is 1 dinar.
Such transfers need a local number and one active account at a bank in Kuwait linked to that number. Money from abroad first arrives in the account by bank transfer and is then spent by phone: rent, services, money for friends and colleagues.

Need to pay rent or support a family in Kuwait from abroad? Find out the transfer terms: a manager will choose a route where the money arrives in dinars with no extra exchange, and a large sum in one bank transfer, without splitting.
We will help you send money to Kuwait
Mistakes cost more than fees: a transfer to the account of a recipient who does not yet have a civil ID card, a sum in dollars with no margin for the rate when rent is set in dinars, a large payment in parts by phone instead of one bank transfer. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and timing, prepare documents on the origin of the money for the bank and carry the transfer through to crediting.
Details and the cost are with a manager in the chat: the price depends on the amount and purpose of the transfer.
A transfer to Kuwait by amount and a 15-year residence permit
- Up to $10,000. The bank looks at the name, account number and purpose: money for family, rent, studies.
- $10,000-$100,000. A statement of the sender's account and an employment or rental contract are needed.
- From $100,000. The bank examines the source of the capital and the contract. Since 10 June 2026 a 15-year residence permit is granted to owners, partners and managers of companies licensed by the investment promotion authority: capital from 1 million dinars ($3.3 million) and investment from 5 million dinars ($17 million). At this level a manager will help collect the documents on the money.
With such a licence a foreigner owns a company in Kuwait in full, without a local partner. How to prove the origin of the money is covered in proof of source of funds, and moving with capital on the capital relocation page. About the capital, see the Kuwait City page.
