How to send money to the UAE in 2026: bank transfers in dollars and dirhams

9 min read ·

In 2026 money reaches the UAE by bank transfer to a dollar or dirham account in 1-5 business days. The dirham has been pegged to the dollar at 3.6725 since 1997, so dollars carry no exchange-rate risk. From $15,000 (55,000 dirhams) an Emirati bank checks the client and asks for statements and proof of income.

Ways to send money to the UAE in 2026

The most reliable way to send money to the UAE in 2026 is a bank transfer in dollars to your own account at an Emirati bank: the dirham is pegged to the dollar at 3.6725, so there is almost no exchange-rate risk. An international transfer takes 1-5 business days, the country has no currency control, and there is no tax on incoming money and no personal income tax at all.

Dirhams are converted to dollars at the fixed rate of the Central Bank of the UAE, 3.6725 dirhams per dollar, rounded up. The table was checked on 8 October 2026.

Why dollars are the better currency to send to the UAE

The dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since 1997. Dollars sent to a dollar or dirham account therefore lose nothing on the rate: the amount in dirhams is predictable years ahead. Euros and other currencies are first exchanged into dollars or dirhams, and the conversion rate becomes part of the price of the transfer.

There is no mandatory sale of foreign currency in the UAE: money is credited in the currency of the account, and legally earned funds can be sent back out at any time. The bank checks an outgoing transfer as carefully as an incoming one.

Before sending to the Emirates: an account in 3-5 days for residents, 2-4 weeks for non-residents

A resident with a residence permit opens an account in the UAE in 3-5 business days. A non-resident gets one in 2-4 weeks, as a savings account with a minimum balance from $6,900 (25,000 dirhams), and the bank expects an explanation of the link to the country: property, a business or a visa.

The UAE has no deposit insurance scheme with a per-depositor limit, so the bank is chosen for its reliability and service terms, not just the tariff.

No UAE visa yet, but you need an account now? A manager will tell you which grounds get the account opened faster and what balance to keep.

From what amount a UAE bank checks a transfer

The thresholds are set by UAE Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2019 on combating money laundering. An international transfer from $960 (3,500 dirhams) arrives with full sender and recipient details, and for a one-off operation from $15,000 (55,000 dirhams) the bank must run a customer check. For an account holder the bank asks for documents when a large sum arrives, so prepare them in advance:

  • passport and, if you have one, residence permit;
  • statements for the account the money comes from, covering 6-12 months with no gaps in dates;
  • the source of income: an income certificate, a tax return, a dividend payment decision;
  • deal documents if the money comes from selling property, a stake or a business;
  • a gift or loan agreement if the money comes from a relative, plus documents on their income;
  • a short explanation of the purpose of the transfer that matches the documents.

Documents not in English or Arabic are translated. The bank checks the amount, the dates and the sender: the money should come from the account of the person who earned it. There is no need to route money through someone else's account - the bank expects a transfer from the account of the owner of the money to the recipient's account. A flat in Dubai: developer payments on schedule and the golden visa

When buying from a developer, payments go to the project's escrow account on the contract schedule; on the resale market, by bank transfer under the sale and purchase agreement. Property from $550,000 (2 million dirhams) gives a 10-year golden visa, and a freehold flat in Dubai also gives a 2-year residence permit.

Buying from a developer and paying in instalments? A specialist will tell you how to make each scheduled payment without delays. In detail: how to buy a flat in Dubai, UAE golden visa and property in the UAE.

No taxes on money in the UAE: what matters to a resident

The UAE has no tax on incoming money, and an individual pays no income tax: deposit interest, dividends, gains on selling securities and rent are not taxed.

  • Companies pay 9% corporate tax on profit above $110,000 (375,000 dirhams) a year.
  • Value added tax is 5% on most goods and services; the transfer itself is not subject to it.
  • A UAE tax residence certificate is issued after 183 days in the country within 12 months, or after 90 days with a residence permit and a permanent home or job; it confirms the change of residence for your previous country.

Tax obligations in the country where you remain resident still apply: income on a UAE account is declared there until your status changes. More on the taxes in the UAE page.

A document pack for your amount

  • Up to $10,000. A transfer to your own account goes on the bank details; from $960 (3,500 dirhams) it carries full sender and recipient details.
  • From $10,000 to $100,000. From $15,000 (55,000 dirhams) the bank runs a customer check: statements, the source of income, the purpose of the transfer.
  • Over $100,000. The full chain from earnings to the sender's account, plus deal documents if the money goes on a home. We handle large sums along the routes in our capital relocation section.

If the direct route from your bank does not go through, there are usually more options than it seems - a manager will pick a working one for your amount. General rules are in sending a large sum abroad, and transfer limits by method in how much money you can send abroad.

Example: $30,000 (110,000 dirhams) to your own account in the UAE. The route is a bank transfer in dollars in one payment, taking 1-5 business days. The amount is above $15,000, so the Emirati bank will run a customer check: the file holds your passport, statements for 6-12 months and an income certificate.

Onward from the UAE: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia

A UAE account often serves as a hub for onward transfers: from the Emirates, dollars go to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Georgia by bank transfer, and a UAE tax residence certificate helps explain the origin of the money to the bank in the next country.

Sending money to neighbouring countries

  • Pakistan - a 24-character account number
  • Israel - shekels and the bank's check
  • Egypt - a foreign currency account and a floating rate
  • India - a transfer with a payment purpose code
  • Cyprus - the bank expects a link to the island
  • Oman - long-standing ties with Zanzibar

We handle moving capital to the Emirates and beyond as part of our capital relocation service.

100% of the price goes to the project's escrow account on the contract schedule; on the resale market you pay by bank transfer under the sale and purchase agreement.

Yes. The UAE has no currency control: dollars and dirhams arrive by bank transfer to your own account in 1-5 business days, and the dirham is pegged to the dollar at 3.6725. A manager will pick the sending route for your amount.
Can I send money to the UAE from an account in another currency?
Yes, the sender pays from their account in its currency, and the sending bank exchanges it into dollars or dirhams and sends the payment in that currency. So the rate worth comparing is the one at which the sending bank sells the currency.
