How much money can you send abroad in 2026: amounts, timing and cost
How much you can send abroad in 2026 depends on two things: your bank's own limits per transaction, day and month, and the documents proving where the money came from. A bank transfer in foreign currency takes 1-5 business days, a card transfer takes minutes, and the cost is made of 4 parts.
In short
- The amount is set by your bank's limits and by the check on the source of the money.
- A card transfer takes minutes, a bank transfer in foreign currency takes 1-5 business days.
- The price is made of 4 parts: sender's fee, exchange rate, intermediaries, recipient's fee.
- For amounts from $10,000 prepare documents on the source of the money.
In detail
Transfer limits: what sets the amount in 2026
The amount you can send abroad is set by two things: the limits of your bank or transfer service, and the check on where the money came from. The larger the transfer, the more detailed the documents the bank asks for - which papers banks accept is covered in the article on proof of source of funds.
To decide how deeply to check a payment, the bank converts the amount into dollars and compares it with the thresholds of its own review. The bigger the amount in dollars, the more detailed the questions about the purpose and source of the money. For example, a transfer of €50,000 equals $55,900 at the rate of 7 October 2026 (€1 = $1.1177), and the bank reviews it as a large transfer.
Your bank's transfer limit: where to find it
Every bank and service has its own limits per transaction, per day and per month. For transfers by phone number and card number they are lower than for a bank transfer using account details.
Your bank shows its limits in the app: in the card settings or in the tariffs for transfers. The daily card limit is raised by a request in the app or at a branch, within one day.
For a large amount a bank transfer by account details is more convenient: it goes as one payment for the whole amount, with a contract or another document showing the purpose.
To your own account abroad or to another person: the difference
The difference is in the paperwork. To your own account the money goes with the purpose "transfer of own funds". To another person the transfer is made as support, a gift or a payment under a contract. The purpose is written briefly and to the point, and the documents depend on the goal.
Data for 2026.
| Purpose of the transfer | What to write as the payment purpose | What to attach |
|---|---|---|
| Support for a relative | Financial support | Proof of kinship, if the bank asks for it |
| Gift | Gift | For a large amount - a deed of gift |
| Studies | Tuition payment under contract | Contract with the school and an invoice |
| Medical treatment | Payment for treatment under contract | Contract with the clinic and an invoice |
| Buying a home | Payment under a sale and purchase agreement | Agreement or preliminary agreement, seller's details |
| To your own account | Transfer of own funds | For a large amount - a statement or income certificate |
Example: a father sends his son in Europe €6,000 ($6,800) for a semester. The bank accepts the contract with the university and the invoice, and the money goes straight to the university's account.
How long a transfer abroad takes: times by method
From a few minutes to 5 business days: transfers by phone and card number are the fastest, and a bank transfer in foreign currency through intermediary banks takes the longest.
Data for 2026.
| Method | How long it takes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer to a card by card number | A few minutes | Small amounts for expenses |
| Money transfer system | Minutes | Sending to a person by name and phone number |
| Bank transfer in foreign currency | 1-5 business days | A large amount to your own account, payment under a contract |
Bank transfer times are counted in the business days of every bank in the chain. A payment sent on Friday evening is processed by the sender's bank only on Monday.
A large transfer can pause at the check: the recipient's bank holds the money until it gets an answer about the source of the amount. How to pass it faster is explained in the article on sending a large amount abroad.
What the cost of a transfer abroad is made of
The price of a transfer has 4 parts, and the fee shown in the app is only one of them:
- The sending bank's fee. A percentage of the amount with a minimum and maximum, or a flat charge.
- The conversion rate. The bank exchanges your money into the transfer currency at its own rate, and the gap with the official rate is often larger than the fee.
- Intermediary banks. Each bank in the chain deducts a flat charge in the transfer currency.
- The recipient bank's fee. It is charged for crediting an incoming transfer, most often in a currency different from the account currency.
Intermediary charges are split in one of three ways when you send: the sender pays them all, the recipient pays them all, or each side pays its own bank. The choice decides whether the recipient gets exactly the amount stated in the contract.
Worked example: on a transfer of $12,000 a 1% fee is $120, and a bank rate 2% worse than the official rate takes another $240. In total the cost is three times the fee you see in the app.

Fee-free transfers abroad: what is still in the price
A transfer abroad is never completely free: even when the bank charges no fee, its income is built into the exchange rate.
You pay least when the transfer currency matches the currency in which the money will be spent. Then there is one exchange, and fewer intermediary banks in the chain, or none at all.
5 ways to lower the total cost of a transfer:
- Compare the bank's rate with the official rate on the day of the transfer: the difference is the hidden charge.
- Send one amount instead of several small ones: intermediaries charge for every payment.
- If the recipient needs an exact amount, take all intermediary charges on yourself when sending.
- Ask the recipient in advance how much their bank charges for an incoming transfer.
- Do not convert twice: one currency into dollars and then dollars into euros means two rate gaps.
The amount ladder: what to prepare for $10,000, $100,000 and more
- Up to $10,000. Any method from the table works. The bank asks for the purpose of the payment.
- $10,000-100,000. A bank transfer from your own account is more convenient. Prepare a statement for the year, an income certificate or a property sale agreement.
- From $100,000. Such a transfer is part of a move, a home purchase or a business sale, and the route is planned as a whole. Capital relocation links the transfer, the source of funds documents and the bank in the destination country.
It pays to send a large amount in one payment with documents rather than in parts: intermediaries charge once, and the bank checks the whole amount and releases the money faster.
Example: 3 transfers in one month of 2026
In October 2026 a family sends three payments abroad. The daughter in Yerevan receives $1,800 to her card by card number, and the money is on her card within minutes.
The family pays a clinic in Germany €8,000 ($9,000) by bank transfer to the clinic's account and attaches the treatment contract to the payment. The money arrives in 3 business days.
The father sends $25,000 to his own account in the UAE as a deposit on a flat, with a salary statement for the year.
In total the family sent about $36,000 in the month. Documents were needed only for the two large transfers: the contract with the clinic and the salary statement. Each payment went its own way: a fast transfer for a small amount, a transfer by account details for a payment under contract, and a transfer to the family's own account.
