The sender needs the name as at the bank, the 16-19 digit card number, the bank and the branch. From $10,000 a document on the purpose and source is attached.

The sender's bank will ask for the contract with the university and the invoice, the Chinese bank for the admission letter, no currency exchange is needed, and the student's quota stays free. How to prepare a large sum is covered in the article on sending a large sum abroad.

In 2026 the most reliable way to send money to China is a bank transfer to the recipient's card, and best straight in yuan: a private person exchanges dollars and euros under the simplified procedure only within $50,000 a year. For a large sum the recipient's bank looks at the payment purpose and the invoice from the university, clinic or landlord. China has no tax on transfers or cash gifts.

Yuan or dollars: what the $50,000 annual quota changes

China keeps currency control. A private person, including a foreigner, exchanges currency into yuan and yuan into currency under the simplified procedure within $50,000 per calendar year, and the unused balance does not carry over to the next year. Above the quota the bank carries out an exchange only with documents on the purpose: a contract, an invoice for study or treatment, purchase papers.

So it pays to send money straight in yuan: the recipient changes nothing, and their quota stays free. The recipient's bank still looks at the payment purpose. Family support, payment for study, treatment or rent explain themselves, and for a large sum the bank will ask for a document on the purpose. Within China the bank sets the exchange rate in a band of 2% up and down from the central parity rate, which the People's Bank of China announces every business day.

Hong Kong is not part of this system: it has its own monetary system with the Hong Kong dollar and no currency exchange quota, and transfers there follow the rules of Hong Kong banks.

What details are needed for a transfer to a Chinese card

China has no international account number like the one used in Europe. A transfer to a private person needs:

  • the recipient's name exactly as at the bank: in Chinese characters or in the Latin transcription from the bank contract;
  • the card or account number: Chinese debit cards usually have 16-19 digits;
  • the full name of the bank and the branch where the account is held;
  • the bank's international code, which the recipient will provide;
  • the payment purpose: family support, payment for study, treatment, rent.

It is most reliable to ask the recipient to send the details as a screenshot from their bank's app rather than typing them from memory: the transcribed name there is written as the bank sees it. The exact name and branch are the main condition for crediting: a Chinese bank credits a payment when the data match the client's record, and then the money arrives the first time, without extra fees from correspondent banks.

A foreign recipient first opens an account themselves: in person at a branch, with a passport and a valid visa or residence permit, an address in China and a local phone number in their own name. A full account is opened for a foreigner with a work or study visa or a residence permit, and on a tourist visa a basic account for everyday spending. Deposits at a Chinese bank are insured up to $75,000 (500,000 yuan).

A transfer to a phone wallet: what works and what does not

In China almost everyone pays with phone wallets, but a resident's wallet is linked to their bank card. So the reliable route to such a wallet is a transfer to that card by the bank details: after crediting, the money is visible in the wallet too.

A visiting foreigner can use a wallet without a Chinese account: a foreign bank card is linked to it. Since March 2024, under the People's Bank of China's instruction, the limit for such users is $5,000 per transaction and $50,000 a year. This is convenient for travel expenses, but not for a large sum to family or a partner.

What documents to attach to a payment to China

Chinese banks check incoming payments carefully: they ask for the contract, the purpose and the source of the money, and a payment with these documents goes through smoothly. For a private transfer to family or for study, the question is settled by documents attached to the payment in advance:

  • the purpose in specific words: tuition for the autumn semester, help for a mother's treatment, not just a transfer of funds;
  • the invoice from the university or clinic, the lease, a document proving kinship;
  • for a sum from $10,000, a paper on the source of the money: a statement, an income certificate, a sale contract.

If your payment needs a different route, there are working legal options: tell a manager about your payment, and they will choose a legal route for your case.

Paying a supplier for goods is a separate case: it is a company settlement under a foreign trade contract, and the bank matches it with the goods, codes and customs documents. Before the first payment it is worth checking the Chinese counterparty.

A transfer for study, treatment and housing in China

Private transfers to China are most often linked to study, treatment, renting a home and family support, and for each purpose the bank has a clear set of papers. Tuition is usually sent straight to the university's account in yuan using its details; the sender's bank will ask for the admission letter and the university's invoice. A foreign student with a study visa gets an account for spending, and parents send money to their card.

If you need to send more than the quota at once, for example for several years of study and accommodation, the admission letter and the university's invoices let the recipient exchange currency above $50,000. Treatment follows the same procedure: the clinic's invoice and the prescribed treatment record. Rent is confirmed by a lease, and family support by a document proving kinship.

Tax on money from abroad in China

Neither a transfer of your own money nor a cash gift to a relative in China is taxed: the country has no inheritance or gift tax. The exception is a gift of property to someone who is not a close relative, on which the recipient pays 20% income tax.

A person becomes a Chinese tax resident after spending 183 days or more in the country in a calendar year. For the first six years of such residence a foreigner does not pay Chinese tax on most foreign income paid from abroad. All worldwide income is taxed from the seventh consecutive year if there was no departure longer than 30 days during that time. More on the taxes in China page.

If the recipient lives in China on a salary from a Chinese company, the employer withholds tax on it at rates from 3% to 45%, and transfers from family abroad do not affect this tax.

Mistakes cost more than fees: dollars the recipient cannot exchange above the annual quota, a typo in the recipient's name or branch, a payment without documents on the purpose that the bank returns minus fees. We will help you avoid them: we choose the currency and route, check the recipient's details, prepare documents on the purpose and source of the money in advance and carry out the transfer through licensed partners.

Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: everything depends on the sum, the bank and your situation.

From $10,000 to large sums: what China will ask

  • Up to $10,000. A transfer in yuan or currency goes through on the details and the purpose, and the recipient's exchange quota is barely used.
  • From $10,000 to $100,000. Exchanging currency into yuan fits into the annual quota only up to $50,000, and beyond that documents on the purpose are needed. The bank may ask about the source of the money, especially with the first large receipt.
  • From $100,000. The recipient's bank checks a large transfer together with the contract: a purchase, study, treatment, an inheritance. Documents in a foreign language are usually translated into Chinese, and notarised papers on an inheritance or a property sale are prepared in advance. All destinations for large transfers are collected in the capital relocation section.

For a sum above the quota, make a plan with a manager: they will collect the documents on the purpose in advance so that the exchange and checks do not stop the payment. How to prove the source of money is covered in the article on proof of source of funds.

How to take money out of China later

Money is taken out of China on the basis of income documents. A private person's purchase of currency also fits into the $50,000 annual quota, and a foreigner sending home what they earned in China shows the bank the employment contract and proof of tax paid. In this case the sum can exceed the quota: the bank matches it with after-tax earnings, not with the $50,000 limit. A private person's quota is used for travel, study, treatment and family support, not for buying a home abroad. From 1 January 2026, under the new client due diligence rules, banks keep transaction records for 10 years and look more closely at transfers abroad.

A foreigner working in China finds it easier to send earnings home every month: the bank matches the sum with the after-tax salary under the employment contract, and the transfer goes through in the usual time. For a one-off large transfer at the end of a contract, income and tax certificates for the whole period are collected.

FAQ

How do you send money to a private person in China from Kazakhstan?
From your own account at a Kazakh bank by bank transfer in yuan to the recipient's card: the money takes 1-3 business days and is credited without exchange. Without opening an account, under the National Bank of Kazakhstan rules updated on 19 April 2026, up to $10,000 can be sent, and a large sum is sent from an account with a contract or an invoice. The recipient's details are the same: the name as at the bank, the card number, the bank and the branch.
How much currency can a private person exchange into yuan in China per year?
$50,000 under the simplified procedure, including foreigners. The unused balance does not carry over to the next year, and the bank exchanges above the quota only with documents on the purpose.
Is there a limit on the sum of a transfer in yuan to China?
No: the law sets no limit on a transfer in yuan, the bank looks at the payment purpose, and the $50,000 annual quota applies only to the recipient's currency exchange.
Can money be sent to a phone wallet in China?
Yes, through the bank card to which the recipient has linked the wallet: the transfer goes to the card by the bank details. A visiting foreigner can link a foreign card to a wallet with a limit of $5,000 per transaction and $50,000 a year.
Is there a tax on cash gifts in China?
No. China has no inheritance or gift tax; 20% income tax is paid only on a gift of property to someone who is not a close relative.

Does the $50,000 quota apply to a transfer to Hong Kong?
No. Hong Kong is a separate monetary system with its own dollar and no currency control, and the mainland China exchange quota does not apply there.
Is an international account number needed for a transfer to China?
No. China has no such number: you need the recipient's card or account number, their name as at the bank, the name of the bank and branch and the bank's international code.
