A bank transfer takes 1-3 business days, and the exact time depends on the correspondent banks between the sender and the Armenian bank. For everyday spending in Armenia a local bank card is handy: it works both in the country and when travelling. Savings and proceeds from selling property are sent to your own account, because the bank trail is needed later for buying a home and for a residence permit. How to receive money in Armenia: what the recipient needs

The recipient in Armenia needs a 10-digit public services number: an Armenian bank starts opening an account with it. With the number, a passport, an Armenian phone number and a lease, an account is opened in 1 visit, multi-currency from the start. The sender is given the account number, the name as at the bank and the currency: money is credited in the currency it was sent in, dollars as dollars, and the recipient buys drams in the app when needed. A bank transfer arrives in 1-3 business days. For small amounts an Armenian bank card is enough: a transfer is sent to it by card number, and money transfer systems credit drams or dollars to it. Checked on 9 October 2026. A large incoming payment, especially the first one, is checked by the bank against a source of funds document.

Amounts and documents at an Armenian bank: from $10,000 to $100,000 and above

At 3 amount levels an Armenian bank asks for different things, and since 12 August 2026 it checks every client under new rules.

AmountWhat the bank will askWhat to attach
Up to $10,000, about 3.6 million dramspublic services number and purposepassport, a clear payment purpose
$10,000-100,000where the money came fromsalary certificate, statements or tax returns, debit confirmation
From $100,000the whole money chain and the purpose: a flat, a business, a depositproperty sale agreement, statements for every step, purchase agreement in Armenia

Drams are converted into dollars at the October 2026 rate and rounded up.

The bank accepts documents in Armenian and some other languages as they are, and the rest with a translation. The general procedure is in the article proof of source of funds. For an amount from $100,000 the route is put together before the transfer, and all lawful routes for large amounts are described on the capital relocation page.

Money for family in Armenia: to their account or card

A transfer to a relative in Armenia in 2026 goes to their Armenian account or card, and the recipient's bank cares who pays and why. The purpose is written plainly: help for parents, a gift, tuition fees.

The bank sees regular small transfers to family as ordinary support. For a large amount, proof of kinship and a deed of gift are attached to the payment: then the recipient's bank asks no extra questions, and the money can be spent straight away on a flat or studies.

An Armenian bank card for life in Yerevan

In Armenia in 2026 an Armenian bank card is handy for everyday spending: it works both in the country and abroad. The card is issued on the day the account is opened or within a few days, and several cards are issued for a multi-currency account, for example in drams for spending in Armenia and in dollars for travel.

A transfer to an Armenian bank card from abroad goes through transfer services by card number, within the card limits. That is enough for rent and everyday expenses, and a large amount is sent by bank transfer to an account: then the money keeps its purpose and a document.

The bank questionnaire since 12 August 2026: citizenship, address and residence

Since 12 August 2026 Armenian banks, under Central Bank rules, ask every client for their citizenship, address and tax residence and check that the payment is lawful. The questionnaire is filled in accurately and the same way everywhere: then the account runs smoothly and payments go through without extra questions. If you have moved, changed address or become a tax resident of another country, the new details are passed to the bank straight away, and the questionnaire matches the transactions again.

For a large incoming payment, especially the first to a new account, the bank will ask for a document on the source of the amount: a property sale agreement, a salary certificate, statements or tax returns, plus the sending bank's debit confirmation. The payment purpose is written the same way as in the documents. Is the bank asking where the money came from? A specialist will select documents that the Armenian bank accepts without repeat requests.

A transfer to yourself in Armenia: a public services number and 1 visit to the bank

The 10-digit public services number, commonly called the social card, is the first thing an Armenian bank asks for: without it no account is opened. The number is issued by the Migration Service to foreigners who are legally in Armenia, in person, through a representative or online.

Armenian banks carry out the first client check during a personal visit, so you come to the branch with a passport, the public services number, an Armenian phone number for the bank's app and an address in Armenia - a lease, often for 6 months or longer. With this set an account for a foreigner without a residence permit is opened in 1 visit.

CostAmount in 2026
Opening a current account as a non-residentfrom free to $140, at most banks $30-60
Card maintenance$10-30 a year, free at some banks
Maintaining an individual's current accountfree at most banks

Many people who have moved keep 2 accounts: at a large bank with an international card and at a bank with low tariffs for life in the country. An individual's current account is free to maintain at most banks, so the second account costs almost nothing. The bank is chosen by 3 things: tariffs for transfers from abroad, an international card and a convenient app. Our manager will tell you the best way to send money to your Armenian account.

Drams, dollars or euros: what to choose for an Armenian account

In 2026 Armenia has no mandatory sale of currency, and the dram is freely exchanged for any currency at the bank: the account is multi-currency, several cards are issued to it, and money is held in drams, dollars or euros. Money can be sent back out by bank transfer, and the bank checks large outgoing amounts the same way as incoming ones.

DepositDeposit Guarantee Fund protection at one bank
Drams only16 million drams ($45,000)
Foreign currency only7 million drams ($20,000)

Because of the difference in guarantees, the part of the amount needed for life in the country is held in drams, and large savings are split between banks: the guarantee limit is counted for each bank separately. For purchases in Armenia currency is exchanged into drams at the bank's rate, checked against the official Central Bank of Armenia rate.

Moving to Yerevan with $30,000: the route step by step

A family moves to Yerevan with $30,000, about 10.9 million drams, and rents a flat for a year. The 5-step route looks like this.

  1. Public services number - at the Migration Service in person, through a representative or online.
  2. Lease - for 6 months or longer: the bank needs it as proof of address.
  3. An account in 1 visit - with a passport, the public services number and an Armenian phone number.
  4. Test transfer - a small amount to check the details and the route through correspondent banks.
  5. Main amount - to your own account with a debit confirmation; part is held in drams under the guarantee of up to $45,000.

The whole route from the public services number to the main amount being credited fits into the first weeks after the move, and the transfer documents will later be useful for a residence permit and buying a flat.

A flat in Yerevan and a residence permit through a company

In 2026 a foreigner in Armenia buys a flat or building in their own name, and land is registered through an Armenian company or taken on a long-term lease. Payment goes through an Armenian bank with source of funds documents, and the contract and registration of title are made out to the same person who pays. Buying a home is separate from a residence permit, and a temporary residence permit is granted for an investment from $5,600, about 2 million drams, in the share capital of an Armenian company. So for a move with a business the route is: a company, a contribution to its capital by transfer from your own account, a residence permit.

Example. For a $90,000 flat, about 32.6 million drams, the money is sent to your own account at an Armenian bank in one payment with the purpose as in the contract, with the sale agreement for the previous home and statements attached. A small test payment goes before the main one. The deal and the residence permit are covered in detail on the pages property in Armenia and Armenia residence permit, and the documents on selling the previous home in the article moving home sale proceeds abroad.

Armenian taxes: 20% on income and 10% on interest

A transfer of your own money to Armenia is not taxed, however much you send: tax is paid only on income, and most of it is withheld by the bank or employer. A tax resident of Armenia is a person who spent 183 days in the country in a year or has their centre of vital interests there; they pay income tax at a flat rate of 20%.

Dividends5%
Rent and royalties10%

Armenia carried out its first automatic exchange of tax information in September 2025, when it had 21 partners, so account information goes to the tax authorities of other countries. This is one more reason to fill in the tax residence questionnaire accurately: the bank's data and the tax office's data must match. All rates are on the page taxes in Armenia.

Example. A $40,000 deposit in drams earns interest, from which the bank itself withholds 10%, and the whole amount stays under the state guarantee. A salary from an Armenian employer is taxed at 20%, and this tax is also withheld before payment.

The next stop after Armenia: Georgia, the UAE, Kazakhstan

Armenia is often the first country after a move, and in 2026 money from here most often goes in 3 directions. Before sending, drams are exchanged into dollars or euros at your bank, and from a multi-currency account money leaves straight away in the right currency. The bank checks an outgoing transfer the same way as an incoming one, so source of funds documents are useful again.

  • To Georgia: a neighbouring market where an account is opened with a passport, handy for a second account.
  • To the UAE: business, a free zone company and the next move.
  • To Kazakhstan: moving further within the Eurasian Union and an account with an identification number.
