7 min read ·

In 2026 euros reach a Cypriot account or card in seconds from the EU and in 1-3 business days from other countries, and the island has no gift or inheritance taxes. A non-resident with a link to the island opens an account in a few weeks, and a non-EU home buyer gets a district permit in 2-3 weeks.

In detail

The simplest way to send money to Cyprus in 2026 is to your own account or card at a Cypriot bank: euros from EU countries arrive in seconds, from other countries in 1-3 business days. The main step is the account itself: a non-resident gets one when there is a clear link to the island, and the check takes several weeks. On the plus side, Cyprus has no taxes on gifts and inheritance, and transferring your own money is not taxed.

A transfer to a non-resident in Cyprus: a link to the island and the bank's check

A Cypriot bank opens an account for a non-resident when it sees a link to the island: renting or buying a home, a job at a Cypriot company, a move; the law does not require a residence permit.

  • Meeting. An in-person meeting at a branch is needed, and some banks verify identity by video.
  • Documents: passport, proof of address no older than three months, a lease, a home purchase contract or an employment contract, the tax number of your country of residence and a document on where the money comes from.
  • Timing. With a full set, several weeks. While the client check is under way, the bank does not process operations on the account.

The answers in the form about income and turnover must match the documents - this is where applications most often stumble. If the link to the island is still only planned, a specialist will tell you how to start the transfer.

A transfer to a Cypriot card and in euros

Money reaches a Cypriot bank card like an ordinary bank transfer - by account or card number, in euros.

An account in Cyprus is opened in euros, often in dollars at the same time. From a non-EU country the payment goes through correspondent banks: each may take its own fee, so in the transfer order the charges are put on the sender, and the currency chosen is the one the account is held in. A Cypriot account number has 28 characters: two country letters, two check digits, the bank and branch code and the account number.

Taxes in Cyprus: tax-free gifts and the 60-day rule

Cyprus has no gift or inheritance taxes, and income taxes arise only for a tax resident.

Income or incoming moneyTax in 2026
Your own money, gifts and inheritancenot taxed
A resident's salary, pension and rent0-35%, the first $25,000 (€22,000) a year tax-free
Interest and dividends of a resident without Cypriot domicileno special defence contribution for 17 years
A non-resident's income from abroadnot taxed

You become a tax resident by spending more than 183 days in Cyprus in a year, or under the 60-day rule: 60 days on the island, no more than 183 days in another country and no residence there, work or a business in Cyprus and a home on the island. More on the taxes in Cyprus page.

Which papers a Cypriot bank will ask for at different amounts

The law does not limit the amount of a transfer to Cyprus, but the larger the payment, the more closely the bank looks at the origin of the money.

Deposits are protected by the guarantee scheme up to $120,000 (€100,000) per depositor at each bank, so large sums are kept at several banks. If the direct route from your bank does not fit, there are working legal options for different cases, and a manager will check them for your case. Buying a home in Cyprus and permanent residence through property

A citizen of a non-EU country buys property in Cyprus with a permit from the district administration: an application on the prescribed form, no fee, a review of 2-3 weeks.

Taking money out of Cyprus: where it goes next

Cyprus has no currency control: money leaves the account by an ordinary bank transfer to any country.

To euro countries the money goes by instant transfer, and a statement from the Cypriot account helps explain its origin to the bank in the next country. Large sums are sent with the contract and a statement, just like incoming ones.

Sending money to neighbouring countries

  • Greece - a tax number by video call
  • Israel - shekels and the bank's check
  • Turkey - the tax number first
  • UAE - dollars with no exchange-rate risk
  • Malta - EU banks an hour's flight away
  • Lebanon - an account in new dollars

All legal routes for moving capital are on the capital relocation page.
