Cyprus on the world map

A visitor residence permit is for nationals from outside the European Union who want to live in Cyprus for more than 90 days in any 180 but not work on the island. It is issued by the Migration Department of Cyprus's Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection for one year and renewed annually while the applicant meets the conditions.

Who the visitor permit suits

Visitor status is the simplest way for a national from outside the European Union to live in Cyprus if income comes from abroad: a pension, rent, dividends, interest or a salary from a foreign company for which the person does not work on the island. This permit does not allow working in Cyprus or running a local business. Work requires other grounds: a work permit, residence as an employee of a foreign-interest company, or the digital nomad visa.

How much Cyprus residence costs in 2026

Migration Department fees for a visitor:

  • permit issue or renewal - $79 (70 euros);
  • registration in the aliens register, first time only - $79 (70 euros).

State fees in year one total from $160 per adult, and $79 on renewal. Other costs go to private providers and depend on your choices:

  • health insurance covering inpatient and outpatient care;
  • a medical check in Cyprus;
  • a criminal record certificate, apostille and sworn translation into Greek or English;
  • rent and lease registration;
  • our support, if you hand the process to us.

You also need to show money: income from $27,000 (24,000 euros) a year and a balance in a Cypriot account. Requirements grow for a family; a manager will calculate the exact amount for your family in the chat. Dollar amounts use the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026, rounded up.

We will work out online the investment or income your family needs and what the permit costs for each member.

Income and bank balance requirements

  • Income from abroad - at least $2,250 (2,000 euros) a month, or $27,000 (24,000 euros) a year, for the main applicant.
  • Spouse or dependent parent - plus 20%, i.e. $5,390 (4,800 euros) a year each.
  • Child - plus 15%, i.e. $4,050 (3,600 euros) a year each.
  • Money in a Cypriot bank account - transferred from abroad with proof of the transfer. In practice about $11,300 (10,000 euros) is expected for the main applicant on first application and about $5,620 (5,000 euros) per family member; about $6,740 (6,000 euros) on renewal.

Income must be stable and lawful, proved by recent statements, leases, pension certificates or dividend documents. Income from work in Cyprus does not count.

Documents for Cyprus residence

  • the prescribed application form and photos;
  • passport and a copy of all pages with stamps;
  • criminal record certificates from your country of citizenship and recent countries of residence, apostilled and translated;
  • proof of foreign income: statements, pension certificates, leases, dividend documents;
  • a Cypriot bank statement and proof of the transfer from abroad;
  • a certified lease with stamp duty paid, or proof of home ownership;
  • health insurance for Cyprus covering inpatient and outpatient care;
  • a medical certificate from a Cypriot doctor: tests for infections and a chest X-ray;
  • for family members, apostilled and translated marriage and birth certificates.

Documents in other languages are translated into Greek or English and certified. Certificates usually need to be recent, so order them shortly before filing.

What to check before applying for Cyprus residence

  • Income below the threshold or not from abroad, for example from work in Cyprus.
  • Money not transferred from abroad: cash deposits or transfers from another Cypriot account do not prove the source.
  • Working on the island while holding visitor status.
  • Incomplete file: missing translation, apostille, insurance with the right cover, or an unregistered lease.
  • A criminal record or a threat to public order.
  • Overstaying before filing: apply while your lawful entry period is still valid.

Who can apply: rules by citizenship

Visitor status is open to all nationals from outside the European Union on the same rules, with no separate ban for any citizenship. Cyprus is not in Schengen, so entry requires a Cyprus visa unless your passport is visa-free; Cyprus also accepts valid multiple-entry Schengen visas.

Money is where differences appear. Under European Union sanctions rules banks may not accept deposits above $113,000 (100,000 euros) from Russian and Belarusian nationals who hold no residence permit in a European Union country. A Cyprus residence permit lifts this limit, but the bank still checks the source of funds closely, so statements and income documents are prepared in advance.

Whether income earned in Cyprus is taxed twice depends on your country's tax treaty with Cyprus; Russia, for example, suspended the main parts of its treaty in 2023. Plan the change of tax residence before the move.

Family: who can be included

The spouse, minor children and dependent parents get visitor residence together with the main applicant. The income requirement rises for each family member: plus 20% for a spouse or parent and plus 15% per child, and each needs separate insurance and documents. Children can attend Cypriot schools, including private English-language schools.

Where to apply and how to renew

Applications are filed in person by appointment: at the Migration Department in Nicosia or at the district police aliens and immigration office in Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos or Famagusta. Fingerprints are taken and you receive a receipt that keeps your stay in Cyprus lawful until the decision.

Renewal is filed before the card expires. You need recent bank statements with the account balance, a renewed lease and valid insurance; the fee is $79 (70 euros). A new medical check and criminal record certificate are usually not required on renewal unless circumstances have changed.

What to know before moving

  • Healthcare. A visitor who pays no contributions is usually outside Cyprus's general healthcare system, so private insurance is needed for the whole stay, not just for the application.
  • The north of the island. The permit is issued by the Republic of Cyprus and applies in government-controlled areas. The Republic does not recognise permits issued in the north and treats entry via northern airports as illegal.
  • Banking. Cypriot banks check the source of funds before opening an account, so gather statements and income documents before travelling.

What Cyprus residence gives and the path to permanent status

  • the right to live in Cyprus beyond 90 days and travel in and out freely;
  • schooling for children;
  • a Cypriot bank account and renting or buying a home;
  • Cypriot tax residence if you live there more than 183 days a year.

Visitor status is temporary and renewed annually. Permanent residence comes on separate grounds, fastest through investment from $337,000 (300,000 euros); see Cyprus residence by investment. Naturalisation requires many years of lawful residence, Greek language skills and an exam on the country's life.

Taxes with Cyprus residence

You become a Cypriot tax resident by spending more than 183 days on the island in a calendar year. A resident not domiciled in Cyprus pays no special defence contribution on dividends, interest and rent for up to 17 of 20 years. Tax on pensions and other foreign income depends on Cyprus's treaty with the source country. See taxes in Cyprus.

After the move you will need a local account and, if you run a business, a company: see the personal account in Cyprus and company registration in Cyprus pages.

Risks and what can change

  • Schengen. Cyprus is in the European Union but not yet in Schengen: a Cypriot permit does not allow visa-free Schengen travel. In July 2026 the European Commission found Cyprus technically ready, but member states must decide unanimously.
  • Annual review. Each renewal rechecks income, balance and insurance, so a drop in income can cost the status.
  • Policy can tighten. Visitor requirements are set by migration policy, which can change without a new law.
  • Rising housing costs: in Limassol and Larnaca rent takes most of the budget.

Alternatives to the visitor permit

What changed and what we rely on

Foreigners' residence in Cyprus is handled by the Migration Department of the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, which accepts visitor applications and sets fees and processing times. Visitor income requirements follow the policy updated at the end of 2022. In July 2026 the European Commission published its report on Cyprus's Schengen readiness.
