Jersey on the world map

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, off the coast of France. It covers 116 km² and had about 103,000 people at the 2021 census. The island is a Crown dependency, not part of the United Kingdom: its own laws, its own taxes and its own decision on who may live there.

How the programme works

Jersey does not sell residency for an investment. The island grants high value resident status to people who are ready to pay substantial tax on the island and benefit the local economy. The status gives full access to the housing market: you can buy or rent any home, work and run a business.

Who gets approved

  • Worldwide income well above £1.25 million a year, around $1.66 million, sustainable for at least 10 years ahead.
  • Readiness to pay at least £250,000 of tax on the island a year, around $330,500.
  • Wealth in practice from £10 million, around $13.22 million, excluding your main home, with a significant liquid share.
  • Benefit to the island: a new or diversifying business, local investment and philanthropy, community involvement.

Each application is considered individually. The minister decides on the recommendation of the Housing and Work Advisory Group, and there is no points table.

What it costs in 2026

Rate: £1 = $1.322, rounded up.

  • Minimum tax - £250,000, around $330,500 a year, every year while you hold the status.
  • Housing - a house from £3.5 million, around $4.63 million, or a flat from £1.75 million, around $2.32 million.
  • Stamp duty on purchase - on a sliding scale: for a £3.5 million house around £195,000, roughly $257,800. Registration - £90.
  • Lawyers and conveyancing - at the local firm's rate, depending on the price.
  • Social security contributions - if you work on the island: the self-employed pay 12.5% up to £72,744 a year.
  • Long-term care charge - 1.5% of income up to £331,584 a year.
  • Certificates, translations, health insurance - a few thousand dollars per family.
  • Our support - quoted after a consultation, depending on your family and the complexity of the file.

Tax from $340,000 a year is not the only filter

The law does not prevent applying for Jersey residency on your own. But mistakes cost more than the tax: the island rejects an application that does not prove an economic or social benefit to Jersey, and income below the threshold or not secured for 10 years ahead puts the move in doubt. UK immigration clearance and a home above the minimum are also required. Murblz support removes these risks: we build the case for the island's benefit, document your income, and line up the home purchase or lease with the immigration clearance. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and we prepare the file for a result on the first filing.

The support fee depends on your family and income structure; a manager calculates it in the chat.

Key terms in brief

The programme for wealthy residents asks for tax, not an investment. Anyone approved since 14 July 2023 must pay at least about $330,500 a year on the island.

  • Income. Worldwide income well above $1.66 million a year, secured for at least 10 years ahead.
  • Rates. The first $1.66 million of income is taxed at 20%, everything above at 1%. Income from Jersey property is always taxed at 20%.
  • Housing. A house over $4.63 million or a flat over $2.32 million.
  • Immigration. Besides Jersey's approval you need clearance to live and work on the island under UK immigration rules.

Jersey approves an application only if the move brings economic or social benefit to the island.

We will work out online the investment or income your family needs and what the permit costs for each member.

Housing requirements

High value resident status allows you to buy any home, but in practice the authorities expect a house from £3.5 million or a flat from £1.75 million. You can rent for the first months and buy a qualifying property within about a year. Rental income from Jersey property is taxed at the full 20%, the 1% rate does not apply.

  • We check the title and restrictions before any deposit.
  • A local lawyer handles the purchase, which is passed before the Royal Court of Jersey.
  • Prices are high: the choice of houses above £3.5 million is small, and a search takes 1 to 3 months.

Documents and where to get them

  • Passports for the whole family.
  • An accountant's or auditor's report on income and a forecast for 10 years ahead, prepared by your financial adviser.
  • Statements and proof of wealth - banks, brokers, asset managers.
  • Proof of source of funds - business sale agreements, dividends, inheritance, tax returns.
  • A plan of benefit to the island - business, investment, philanthropy, prepared together with you.
  • Police certificates - from your countries of citizenship and residence, apostilled.
  • Marriage and birth certificates - apostilled and translated into English.
  • Immigration documents - application form, biometrics, health insurance.

Requirements and how to get approved

  • Unstable income. A one-off business sale without steady income for 10 years ahead does not qualify.
  • No benefit to the island. Applications without a plan for investment, business or community involvement are rarely approved.
  • Unclear source of funds or a complex ownership structure without explanation.
  • Sanctions risk. Jersey applies UK sanctions, people under them are refused, and banks check Russian and Belarusian citizens much more strictly.
  • No immigration clearance. Programme approval does not replace permission to live and work on the island.
  • Reputation issues - press coverage, litigation, past tax breaches.

Taxes

  • Income tax for high value residents - 20% on the first £1.25 million of income and 1% on everything above, with a minimum of £250,000 a year. Income from Jersey property is always taxed at 20%.
  • No capital gains tax, no inheritance or gift tax.
  • Probate stamp duty - 0.5-0.75% of Jersey assets on probate, capped at £100,000.
  • Goods and services tax - 5%.
  • Social security and long-term care charge - if you work on the island.

Jersey tax residence does not remove tax in a country where you remain resident. We plan the exit from your previous residence and account reporting in advance: Jersey exchanges account data with other countries.

What changes in 2026

  • The programme thresholds have not changed since 14 July 2023: minimum tax £250,000, income from £1.25 million, housing from £3.5 million and £1.75 million.
  • From 2026 the social security limits rose: £6,062 a month for employees and £331,584 a year for the long-term care charge.
  • The second-home stamp duty surcharge was reviewed in the 2026 budget. We check the rate for your purchase on the completion date.
  • Tax data exchange keeps expanding, and island banks ask for proof of tax residence more often.

Path to British citizenship

After 5 years of lawful residence in Jersey you can obtain indefinite leave to remain. After another 12 months you can apply for British citizenship. You need English at B1 level, the Life in the UK test and no more than 450 days of absence over 5 years. Years in Jersey count because the island is part of the common area with the UK for these rules.

Life in Jersey

The capital is St Helier. A flight to London takes about 45 minutes, and ferries run to France. The language is English, and the currency is the pound sterling plus Jersey's own banknotes. The island has private schools and a hospital; complex treatment often means a flight to London. Housing and services are expensive, but the island is safe, with low crime and short distances.

Family, schools and healthcare

Your spouse and children under 18 are included in the application. They get the same status and can study and work on the island. Adult children and parents apply separately and need their own reason to move.

  • Schools. The island has state schools, free for residents, and fee-paying private schools with the British curriculum. Many families send older children to boarding schools in England.
  • Healthcare. GP visits are paid, and the hospital serves all residents. Private insurance is needed for planned surgery and treatment in London.
  • Household staff. Hiring a nanny or driver from abroad requires a work permit, so many families hire locally.
  • Travel. Flights go from Jersey to London, Manchester, Edinburgh and several European cities, and ferries run to France.

Who the programme suits

Entrepreneurs after a business sale with steady investment income, owners of family wealth who want a British legal setting without British taxes, and families who want to live close to London. If your income is below £1.25 million, other countries are a better fit.
