How to send money to Jersey in 2026: British account details, euros under European rules and paying for a home by the court sitting
Jersey accepts pounds with British account details and euros under common European rules, and since April 2026 it repays deposits of up to 50,000 pounds within a week. We explain who can buy a home on the island, why the money is needed by Friday and which taxes a resident pays.
Money is sent to Jersey in pounds or euros to a local bank account in British format: the Jersey pound equals the pound sterling, a transfer from the United Kingdom arrives with no exchange, and euros from Europe have followed common European rules since 2016. Since 1 April 2026 deposits up to $67,000 (£50,000) are repaid in 7 business days.
Income tax in Jersey is 20%, and there are no gift, inheritance or capital gains taxes.

A British-format account number and euros under European rules
Jersey banks use British account details: domestically an account is identified by a six-digit sort code and an eight-digit number, and the 22-character international number starts with the British code. So a payment from London to Jersey travels as an ordinary pound transfer. Since 1 May 2016 the island has been part of the single euro payments area: a transfer from Germany, France or the Netherlands reaches a euro account at a Jersey bank within a business day under the same rules as inside Europe.
If the money comes from outside Europe, it is best to choose the currency before sending. Jersey banks keep accounts in several currencies: pounds are credited to a pound account, euros to a euro account, dollars to a dollar account, and there is no exchange on the island at all. If you send dollars to a pound account, the bank will change them at its own rate on the day they arrive.
An account in Jersey is opened with a passport, proof of address and income documents; the bank will ask why you need an account on the island and where the money will come from. We will suggest the best way to send money to Jersey: we will choose the currency and route for your amount, prepare documents for the bank and carry out the transfer through licensed partners until it is credited.
Deposit protection in Jersey: 50,000 pounds in 7 business days
The Jersey Depositor Compensation Scheme protects up to $67,000 (£50,000) per person at one bank on the island, however many accounts are held there. A joint account for two is protected up to $140,000 (£100,000). Protection covers residents and non-residents and deposits in any currency, and it applies to individuals and charities.
Since 1 April 2026 the scheme has become faster. Money is repaid in 7 business days, to most depositors automatically, without a claim, and the cap of 100 million pounds in total payouts over five years has been removed. The scheme is run by the Jersey Resolution and Compensation Authority, which will prepare proposals on the level of protection by the first half of 2027: the 50,000 pound limit has applied since 2009.
For money meant for a home purchase or the first years of living there, it is worth deciding in advance which bank and which currency to hold it in until the deal. A manager will suggest how to place a transfer to Jersey for your timing and amount.
A home in Jersey: money by Friday, when the court approves the contract
The right to buy and occupy housing in Jersey is set by the Control of Housing and Work Law 2012. Homes are bought by residents with entitled status - granted after 10 years on the island - and by licensed specialists invited by local businesses, who are allowed one home to live in. New residents first rent housing for registered persons. Since 2026 a separate route applies to wealthy newcomers: they receive entitled status on the recommendation of the housing and work commission.

A Jersey deal is unusual: the sale contract is approved by the Royal Court, and property sittings take place on Friday afternoons. The buyer's lawyer requires the full price to be in their account before or on the day of the sitting, and the seller receives the money no later than the following Tuesday. So an international transfer is sent several business days before Friday, with time for the bank's checks. The buyer also pays stamp duty, calculated on the price on a sliding scale. Apartments in Jersey are often owned through shares in the building's company: in that case land transaction tax is paid on the same scale instead of stamp duty, and the deal is completed by a share transfer, with no court sitting. Home selection is on the property in Jersey page.
Taxes in Jersey: 20% on income and nothing on gifts
You become a Jersey tax resident after 183 days on the island in a tax year. A resident pays 20% income tax, and the island has no capital gains, inheritance or gift taxes. Money from parents arrives in the account tax-free in any amount, and selling securities at a profit creates no capital gains tax.

Purchases on the island carry a 5% goods and services tax. The bank will still check a large gift, so it comes with a gift agreement and the giver's statement. How family trusts work on the island is covered in trusts and foundations in Jersey and Guernsey, and life and residence statuses on the Jersey page.
How much you send to Jersey: three tiers of checks
- Up to $10,000 - a Jersey bank needs only the payment purpose and a clear link to the recipient: rent, study, family support.
- $10,000-100,000 - the bank asks for a 6-month statement and a document on the source of the money: a sale contract, an income certificate, a gift agreement.
- From $100,000 - you need a source-of-wealth file covering several years and the contract the transfer is for: a home purchase, an investment, a family move.
How to gather the documents is in proof of source of funds, and a large transfer is easier to handle as a move of capital - see the capital relocation page. Ask a manager about the transfer terms: they will work out the timing for your deal's Friday.
From Jersey onwards: the United Kingdom, France and neighbouring Guernsey
Pounds leave Jersey for the United Kingdom as a domestic transfer, with no exchange. To France, whose coast is less than 25 kilometres from the island, money goes as a single euro payment. To Guernsey payments are made in pounds with the same British details. Large outgoing transfers are covered in sending large sums abroad.
