Personal accounts: Jersey
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
Jersey is a British Crown Dependency in the English Channel and one of the largest financial centres for private wealth. Banks on the island are licensed and supervised by the Jersey Financial Services Commission, and payments are in pounds sterling. A personal account at a Jersey bank is opened for island residents and wealthy clients from other countries who want an account in a stable jurisdiction with English-style law.
Deposit protection
The Jersey Depositors Compensation Scheme protects up to £50,000, about $66,124, per person per banking group. It covers individuals and charities but not companies, partnerships or trusts. From 1 April 2026 payouts should take about 7 working days and be automatic for most depositors. Dollar amounts are converted at the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026 and rounded up.
Who can open a personal account
- Jersey residents with confirmed status and address;
- wealthy clients from other countries whose source of wealth the bank understands;
- beneficiaries of trusts and foundations administered in Jersey;
- people moving to the island, including under the high value residency scheme.
What the bank checks
- identity, address and tax residence;
- the source of funds and wealth, especially for large amounts;
- the purpose of the account and expected activity;
- the link to the island or to a structure administered in Jersey.
Jersey exchanges account information with other countries' tax authorities, so an account there does not hide income: taxes are paid in the country of residence.
Documents
- passport and a second identity document;
- proof of address;
- a bank or professional reference letter;
- proof of income, source of funds and wealth.
Why applications are refused
- balances too small for the bank's profile;
- an unverified source of wealth;
- no link to the island and no clear purpose;
- links to sanctioned countries.
Taxes for island residents
A Jersey account does not change tax residence: taxes are paid where the owner lives. For those moving to the island, local rules matter. The standard income tax rate for residents is 20%, and Jersey has no capital gains tax. High value residents pay 20% on the first GBP 1,250,000 of worldwide income and 1% above it, except Jersey property income, which is taxed at 20%.
How opening works
- Profile. We define the account's purpose, amounts and source of wealth.
- Bank. We choose a bank whose minimum threshold and client profile fit you.
- Documents. We collect, certify and translate documents and prepare the source of funds explanation.
- Review. We answer the bank's questions until the decision, usually after an interview with a banker.
Jersey banks open accounts not only in pounds sterling but also in dollars and euros, so one bank can hold savings in several currencies.
What we do
We assess the chances, choose a bank for your profile, prepare documents and a source-of-funds explanation, and handle the application until the decision. If you need a structure for your wealth, compare a Jersey trust and a Jersey foundation. A manager will calculate the cost in the chat.
