Why it pays to bring money into Morocco in foreign currency
The dirham is exchanged inside the country, and money leaves for abroad under the rules of the Foreign Exchange Office. The main one is set out in the general instruction on foreign exchange operations: if a non-resident foreigner paid for an investment with foreign currency from abroad, the income and the sale proceeds with the gain are transferred back to them with no limit on the amount. This applies to buying a flat, a stake in a company or securities.

If the same flat is bought with money earned in the country, the sale proceeds stay on a dirham account. So the order is simple: first the transfer from abroad, then the deal, and the bank's payment order is kept together with the contract. Planning an investment and want to take the money out later? A manager will set up the transfer so that the way back stays open.
A non-resident account: in euros, dollars or convertible dirhams
Moroccan banks open two kinds of accounts for a foreigner without a residence permit: in foreign currency and in convertible dirhams. Both are funded by transfers from abroad, and money from them is transferred back out of the country. A convertible dirham account is convenient for spending inside the country: rent, renovation and taxes are paid in dirhams, and the balance goes back into currency.
For people who live in the country permanently, the bank also opens an ordinary dirham account: a salary arrives on it, and bills are paid from it. More about the cities is on the Casablanca and Rabat pages.
A 24-digit account number and transfers in 20 seconds
Bank details in Morocco are 24 digits: the first 3 are the bank code, followed by the city code, the account number and 2 check digits. The largest banks have the codes 007, 011, 013, 021, 022 and 230. A sender from Europe or the USA is given these 24 digits, the recipient's full name and the bank's code for international transfers.
Inside the country an instant transfer between banks has worked since 1 June 2023: around the clock, in under 20 seconds. According to the central bank's annual report, 16.3 million such transfers were made in 2024, and 64,600 a day in December.
122 billion dirhams a year: money from family
According to the Foreign Exchange Office, in 2025 people in Morocco received $13 billion from abroad, more than 122 billion dirhams and 2.6% more than a year earlier. In January-August 2026, $9 billion, or 89.2 billion dirhams, arrived, 9% more than in the same months of 2025.
Tax: 183 days in Morocco and worldwide income
Article 23 of Morocco's tax code treats a person as resident on any of three grounds: a permanent home and family in the country, the main source of income in the country, or more than 183 days of stay in any 365 days. A resident pays tax on worldwide income, and a non-resident only on income from Morocco, for example rent from a flat.
A flat in Marrakech: 4% and 1.5% on top of the price
Foreigners buy flats, villas, traditional courtyard houses and plots within city limits in Morocco on general terms. The deal is handled by a notary, and ownership is recorded in the land register.

In 2026 a home buyer pays a registration duty of 4% of the price and 1.5% for recording in the land register, plus the notary's fees. A flat at $200,000 comes to $211,000 with the duties, not counting the notary. The price and duties are built into the transfer amount from the start: a top-up from dirhams earned in the country is not covered by the guarantee of a transfer back. More about the city is on the Marrakech page.
How many papers a bank in Morocco needs
Banks work under Law 43-05 on combating money laundering, as amended in 2021, and are supervised by the central bank of Morocco. In 2026 the questions grow with the amount:
| Amount | What a bank in Morocco will ask | Which paper answers the question |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $10,000 | the sender and the reason for the transfer | the purpose line in the payment order |
| $10,000 - $100,000 | the source of the sum | a 3-6 month bank statement, a salary certificate |
| From $100,000 | the origin of the money and the purpose of the investment | a contract for the sale of property or shares, an income tax return, a preliminary purchase contract |
A bank credits a transfer of $100,000 or more for a deal faster when papers on the origin of the money are attached right away. A manager will put the pack together for your bank, and countries for moving with capital are compared on the capital relocation page.
