A transfer to a private individual in Spain: the foreigner number, the name and the 24-character account
Money for a private individual in Spain goes to their account at a Spanish bank, and a foreigner can open an account only after receiving a foreigner identification number. It is assigned once, at a Spanish consulate or at the police in Spain, with a stated reason: buying a home, an account, an inheritance, work or studies.
- Details from the recipient: the name exactly as the bank holds it and the 24-character account number, which starts with the country letters and two check digits. Since 9 October 2025 the sender's bank in the EU checks the name against the number before debiting the money.
- A non-resident gets a non-resident account: the bank will ask for a passport, the foreigner number, a non-residence certificate or a tax residence document from your country, and proof of address and income.
- Anyone legally resident in the EU must be offered a basic payment account with capped fees.

The bank will ask why you need an account in Spain specifically, where your income comes from, what amounts will arrive and from which countries. If the recipient does not yet have a foreigner number or an account, a manager will tell you where to start so the first transfer does not bounce.
A transfer in euros from outside the EU: the rate and correspondent banks
From a non-EU country money reaches Spain through correspondent banks in 1-3 business days, and the cheapest option is to send euros straight away: an account at a Spanish bank is opened in euros, and the recipient's bank exchanges a payment in another currency at its own rate.
Each correspondent bank in the chain may deduct its own fee, so in the transfer order choose to have the charges paid by the sender. Write the payment purpose as it appears in the documents: transfer of own funds, payment under a contract, help for a relative. If the direct route from your country does not go through, there are more working legal options for different cases than it seems - they are chosen to suit the sender's bank. Within the EU an instant transfer in euros costs no more than a standard one.
Money for relatives in Spain and gift tax
Your own money on your own account in Spain is not taxed, while money given as a gift is taxed for a resident recipient: gift tax on the state scale of 7.65-34% with the coefficients and reliefs of their region.
| Incoming money or income | Tax in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Your own money to your own account | not taxed |
| A cash gift to a Spanish resident | gift tax of 7.65-34% with regional reliefs, paid by the recipient |
| Deposit interest for a resident | 19-30% on the savings income scale |
| Interest for a non-resident living in the EU | 0% |
| Interest for a non-resident from other countries | 19% |
Regions set their own reliefs for close relatives, so the tax on the same gift differs in Madrid and Catalonia. A tax resident is someone who has spent more than 183 days in Spain in a year; they declare worldwide income and report foreign accounts and assets if the total in a category exceeds $56,000 (€50,000). Residence rules and rates are on the taxes in Spain page.
How much you can send and which documents a Spanish bank will ask for
The law does not limit the amount of a transfer to Spain, and the volume of documents grows with the amount.
Documents by amount in 2026:
| Amount | What the bank will ask | Which document to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $10,000 | the payment purpose | the purpose and the sender's name are enough |
| $10,000-$120,000 | where the money comes from and why it is going to Spain | a statement, an income certificate or a sale contract |
| From $120,000 (€100,000) | the origin of the whole sum and the purpose: a home, a deposit, a business | a full set of documents on the origin and the deal contract |
Deposits at a Spanish bank are protected up to $120,000 (€100,000) per depositor at each bank, so large savings are kept at several banks. Plan a large transfer before sending: we will suggest the best way to send it and which papers the bank will accept, and all legal routes for moving capital are on the capital relocation page. General rules on documents are in proof of source of funds, and large transfers in sending a large sum abroad.
Paying for a flat in Spain by transfer
A foreigner buys a flat in Spain in their own name without a residence permit, and the payment is made by transfer from their Spanish account by the date of signing at the notary.
- Resale: property transfer tax is 6% in Madrid and 10% in Catalonia.
- New build: value added tax of 10% plus the regional stamp duty.
- A residence permit has not been issued for buying a home since 3 April 2025; other grounds are on the Spanish residence permit page.

Example: for a resale flat in Madrid at $450,000 (€400,000) the money goes to your own Spanish account in one payment with the contract as the purpose, and the property transfer tax is $27,000 (€24,000) on top of the price. The annual property tax is later paid from the same account. More on the deal in buying a flat in Spain, and on money from selling a home in your home country in moving home sale proceeds abroad.
From Spain back out and onward
Spain has no currency control: money leaves the account by an ordinary bank transfer to any country, and the bank will ask for the payment purpose. Transfers between euro countries within the EU follow the same rules as within Spain.
