How to send money to Qatar in 2026: riyals or dollars to an account in 1-3 business days, for a job move and a flat

9 min read ·

Money goes to Qatar by bank transfer in 1-3 business days: riyals or US dollars are credited to a 29-character account, and the riyal rate has been fixed since 2001. Within the country money moves by phone number in seconds. The bank checks the name and purpose, and from $10,000 asks for a statement and a contract.

What works for a transfer to Qatar on 8 October 2026

The 4 routes below were checked on 8 October 2026, and sums are converted at 3.64 riyals per dollar. The rate has been fixed since 2001, so dollars sent and riyals in the account differ only by the bank's fee.

Is a transfer from your country to Qatar going through several banks and getting delayed? There are usually more options than it seems: tell a manager the sum and where you are sending from, and they will suggest a working route.

The riyal and the dollar: why money goes to Qatar in US dollars

Since 2001 the Qatari riyal has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.64, and the central bank holds it at that level. A bank in Qatar credits a dollar transfer at the fixed rate or puts it into a dollar account as it is, and exchanges euros at its own rate. An example: $50,000 is 182,000 riyals, and on leaving the same riyals again give $50,000 minus the bank's fee, so savings in riyals carry no exchange rate risk.

Qatar has no currency control: money comes into the country and leaves it without permits, and the balance can be sent home at any time. 3 details are enough for crediting: the 29-character account number in international format, the bank's international code and the recipient's name as on the resident ID.

Large sums in dollars pass through a correspondent bank in the United States, so the purpose is written in the payment straight away: salary, rent, buying a flat, help for the family. The clearer the purpose, the faster the bank in Qatar credits the transfer.

An account in Qatar before and after the resident ID

An account at a Qatari bank is opened with a resident ID, which is issued after entry on a work visa. Large banks open an account online even before arrival on the basis of an employer's letter, and the ID is brought in within 90 days. Several banks have accounts for non-residents, but with a high minimum balance. Since 2015 employers have paid salaries only by transfer to the employee's account at a bank in Qatar, so the account is needed from the first month of work.

The first weeks in Doha are the most expensive: the rental deposit, rent, furniture, a car. Landlords usually take cheques for the whole year ahead, so a chequebook is ordered right after the ID, and money for a year's rent is sent in advance. Need to send money before the account is ready? A manager will tell you how to make the transfer in the first weeks.

Within Qatar, instant transfers by phone number have worked since March 2024: up to 50,000 riyals ($14,000) at a time, only in riyals and between accounts at the country's banks. The phone number is linked to the account in your bank's app, and only someone who has made this link receives a transfer by number.

A home in Qatar: 10 zones, the project account and a residence permit

Foreigners buy homes as owners in 10 zones and projects under government decision No. 21 of 2026, including West Bay, the Pearl and Lusail. In another 16 zones homes are taken for use for 99 years with renewal. Both ownership and the right of use work for a residence permit: the 730,000-riyal threshold is counted on the deal price.

A home under construction is paid into a separate project account at a bank in Qatar, as required by the 2014 development law. The developer receives the first money from this account once the building is 20% complete and then in construction stages, and the buyer receives a preliminary ownership certificate and exchanges it for a regular one after completion.

An example: a flat on the Pearl for 2 million riyals ($550,000). The 0.25% registration fee is 5,000 riyals ($1,400), paid by the buyer. The price is above 730,000 riyals ($200,000), so the purchase gives a residence permit without a sponsor for as long as the flat is owned. With a full set of documents the ownership certificate is issued in 1 visit, and the residence permit on the purchase in a few days.

From 3.65 million riyals ($1 million) the residence permit comes with permanent resident benefits: state hospitals and schools and the right to run some types of business. The transfer of the price and the fee is best planned before the reservation: a manager will suggest how to split the payments by construction stage, and properties are collected on the property in Qatar page.

Mistakes cost more than fees: money for a flat under construction sent to the developer outside the project account, payment from a relative's account instead of the buyer's, a price just below 730,000 riyals when the purpose of the purchase is a residence permit. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and currency, prepare documents on the source of the money for the bank in Qatar and carry out the transfer through to crediting.

Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: the cost depends on the sum and the purpose of the transfer.

Taxes in Qatar on salary, deposits and money from family

Qatar has no personal income tax: salary, deposit interest, money from family and from selling a flat abroad arrive in full. There is no gift or inheritance tax either. The 10% tax is paid by companies and entrepreneurs on business profit in Qatar, not by private individuals on transfers. A person who spends more than 183 days a year in the country is a Qatari tax resident, but the rate for salary and deposits is still zero.

Because of this, savings are often sent to Qatar for the length of a contract: the money sits on a deposit in riyals or dollars, and the interest is not taxed. A term deposit in riyals is opened at the same bank where the salary is paid.

No pension contributions are taken from foreigners either: social insurance in Qatar is for citizens. Instead of a pension, a foreigner leaving a job receives an end-of-service payment of at least 3 weeks' basic salary for each year worked, and this sum is often sent home in one payment.

How much you send to Qatar: three thresholds and the papers

  • Up to $10,000. The bank checks the name, the account number and the purpose. Money for the first weeks, the deposit and rent is credited without extra papers.
  • $10,000-100,000. The bank asks for the sender's account statement and a document for the purpose: a lease, an employment contract, a school invoice.
  • From $100,000. The bank looks at the source of the whole capital: the sale of a flat or a business, savings over the years. For a home, the contract with the developer and the payment schedule are added.

A bank in Qatar also looks at the recipient: a large transfer to an account opened on a work visa is checked against the salary and position. If the sum is more than a year's income, a document on its source is attached straight away: a flat sale contract or a statement of savings.

From Qatar home and beyond: India, the Philippines, the United Kingdom

9 out of 10 residents of Qatar are foreigners, and they often send their salaries to their families. An outgoing transfer goes as freely as an incoming one: there is no currency control, and the end-of-service payment on leaving is sent home in one sum. Money most often goes to 3 countries:
