Which currency to send money to Suriname in
Suriname has long lived with two currencies: according to central bank data for 2023, about 80% of deposits are held in dollars and euros. Prices of homes and cars are often quoted in US dollars, so money for a large purchase is better kept in the sending currency and not exchanged twice.
In June 2021 the central bank let the rate float under a programme with the International Monetary Fund. Now the market sets it, and over the past year it has stayed at roughly 37 to 39.5 Suriname dollars per US dollar. Suriname dollars are needed for everyday spending and are exchanged in parts. The next milestone for the economy is offshore oil: the investment decision on the project was taken in October 2024, and first production is expected in 2028.
We will suggest how best to send money to Suriname: we will choose the currency and route for the sum and purpose so you do not lose on exchange.
Euros from the Netherlands arrive as an international transfer
Suriname's official language is Dutch, and many families have relatives living in the Netherlands. But Suriname is not part of the single euro payments area: euros from Amsterdam or Rotterdam go as an international transfer through a correspondent bank. The sender needs the recipient bank's international code, the account number and the address, and the payment usually arrives in 1-3 business days.

Euros are credited to a euro account without exchange, so relatives in the Netherlands usually send money exactly this way: euros to euros.
We will help you send money to Suriname
Mistakes cost more than fees: dollars exchanged into Suriname dollars and back, euros without the recipient bank's international code, a home paid for to details other than the notary's, and a large sum without papers on its origin. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the transfer route and currency, collect documents on the origin of the money for the bank in Paramaribo and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.
Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: much depends on the sum, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.
A home in Paramaribo: the stamp duty is down to 4%
Since October 2022 a transfer of property title carries a stamp duty of 4% of the value, not 7% as before. If a home passes to a relative up to the second degree, the duty is 0.5%. A notary handles the deal: they check the seller's title, draft the deed in Dutch and register it in the land registry.

Money for the purchase is sent to the details given by the deal notary, by the date the deed is signed. The city is covered on the Paramaribo page, and home sale proceeds in the article on moving home sale proceeds abroad.
Taxes after a move: 10% VAT and a scale up to 38%
Since 1 January 2023 Suriname has had a 10% value added tax, which replaced the old turnover tax. A resident's income tax is progressive, with a top rate of 38%. A transfer from abroad itself is not taxed.
