How to send money to Nicaragua in 2026: dollars without exchange in 1-3 business days and transfers between banks in seconds

7 min read ·

In 2026 a Nicaraguan bank credits an international transfer in 1-3 business days to a dollar account without exchange or in cordobas, and a remittance to family is paid out in dollars on the day it is sent. Below $10,000 there is one question: who the money is from and why; from $10,000 a statement or income certificate is needed.

Want to send a transfer to Nicaragua right now? A manager will suggest the best terms. Work out the transfer cost

Checked on 8 October 2026. The official rate of the Central Bank of Nicaragua on 7 October 2026 is 36.6243 cordobas per dollar, the same as on 1 January 2026.

A rate of 36.6243 for the whole year: why the cordoba is not getting cheaper

For many years the Central Bank of Nicaragua gradually devalued the cordoba against the dollar on a schedule announced in advance: by 5% a year until 2019 and by 1% from February 2023. By a board decision of 9 August 2023 the step was cut to zero from 1 January 2024, and since then the rate has stood at 36.6243. On 20 October 2025 the central bank announced the same rate for all of 2026 and confirmed it in April and August 2026.

So the sum in cordobas is known in advance: $10,000 in January and in December 2026 gives the same 366,243 cordobas at the official rate. The recipient has no obligation to sell currency. Want to work out the sum in cordobas in advance? A manager will compare bank rates and suggest the account currency.

The international account number and transfers in seconds

The account number in Nicaragua is the same format for all banks: 28 characters, two country letters, two check digits, a 4-letter bank code and a 20-digit account number. The format was approved by the central bank's board in 2018, and bank clients have seen their number since 25 January 2023. It is used for transfers through the regional system of the central banks of Central America and the Dominican Republic; a bank in the United States or Europe is given the bank's international code and the account number, with the international number added as well.

Within the country money moves between banks through the automated clearing house: around the clock, in 15-30 seconds; in the first quarter of 2026 there were 72.1% more transactions than a year earlier. Life in the capital is covered on the Managua page.

Dollars stay dollars: the 2025 cordoba rule

Since 1 January 2025 prices within the country have been quoted in cordobas, and card payments in Nicaragua go through in cordobas even from a dollar account: the bank debits the equivalent at the rate. The rule does not apply to family remittances, exports, imports or international tickets: transfers from abroad are paid out in dollars.

Dollar accounts, deposits and loans work as before, and most deposits in the country's banks are in dollars. So savings are conveniently kept in a dollar account, and spending within the country is done by card. Need a transfer in dollars? A manager will choose a route for your sum and timing.

Family remittances: 29.4% of the country's economy

According to the central bank, in 2024 Nicaragua received a record $5.24 billion of remittances, 29.4% of the country's economy, and 82.8% of the money came from the United States.

Tax: family remittances are exempt, interest is taxed at 15%

Tax Harmonisation Law 822 taxes only income from sources in Nicaragua, regardless of citizenship, and a resident does not declare a salary or pension from abroad. The law (Article 79, point 7) expressly exempts family remittances received by residents from tax. On deposit interest the bank itself withholds a 15% final tax, a rate in force since 28 February 2019.

A house in San Juan del Sur: the seller's tax from 1% to 7%

Foreigners buy homes in Nicaragua on general terms. Foreign Investment Law 1240, in force since 26 May 2025, gives an investor the same rights as locals, including free purchase of currency and transfer of capital abroad. Ownership is registered by the public property registry.

When property is sold, income tax is withheld from the seller on a scale by value; the base is the larger of the prices in the notarial deed and in the land registry. The scale for 2026:

ValueRate
Up to $50,0001%
$50,000 - $100,0002%
$100,000 - $200,0003%
$200,000 - $300,0004%
$300,000 - $400,0005%
$400,000 - $500,0006%
Over $500,0007%

The seller pays the tax from the sum received, so it is convenient to agree the price with it taken into account from the start. Found a house by the ocean? A manager will plan the transfer around the deal date.

Documents for a bank in Nicaragua with a large sum

Banks check clients under the 2018 anti-money laundering Law 977 and the bank supervision rule as amended on 29 November 2024. In 2026 the questions grow with the sum:

SumWhat the bank will find outHow to confirm it
Up to $10,000who the money is from and whythe payment purpose and the link to the recipient
$10,000 - $100,000the source of the moneyan account statement, an income certificate
From $100,000the origin and purpose of the whole suma property sale contract, a tax return, a purchase contract

With papers attached in advance, the bank credits a large sum without repeated queries. Countries for moving with capital are compared on the capital relocation page.
