How to send money to Guyana in 2026: a rate of about 209 per dollar, deposit protection and buying a house in Georgetown

6 min read ·

In 2026 Guyana is growing on oil, Georgetown banks are used to dollars, and the rate barely changes: about 209 Guyanese dollars per US dollar. We show which currency to send money in, how much is protected at a bank, which taxes matter when selling and buying a house and how to pay for the deal through a lawyer.

Money is sent to Guyana by bank transfer in US dollars or Guyanese dollars to an account at a bank in Georgetown. The payment takes 1-3 business days, and the rate barely moves: on 8 October 2026 the Bank of Guyana bought the dollar at 207.98 and sold it at 210.45 Guyanese dollars. A deposit at each bank is protected up to 2 million Guyanese dollars ($9,600).

Oil changed Guyana's banks, but the rate stayed calm

Since December 2019 Guyana has been producing oil offshore, and large dollar payments started coming into the country: contractors, construction, new houses in Georgetown. Banks are used to currency receipts, so a dollar account is normal here, and the Guyanese dollar is needed only for local spending.

The Bank of Guyana publishes the rate every day, and the gap between buying and selling stays around 1%. So a large sum is more conveniently sent in dollars and exchanged in parts for payments. We will advise how best to send money to Guyana: the currency, the route and the timing for your amount.

Deposits at a Guyanese bank are protected up to 2 million Guyanese dollars

The 2018 Deposit Insurance Act protects up to 2 million Guyanese dollars ($9,600) per depositor at each bank. All of a person's accounts at one bank are added together, a joint account is counted as one, and the payout is split equally between the holders. The deposit insurance corporation undertakes to return the money within 30 days.

The ceiling is small compared with home prices in the capital, so money for a purchase is sent closer to the deal rather than kept on an account for months.

Mistakes cost more than fees: the whole house fund kept for months on one account above the deposit insurance ceiling, dollars exchanged twice through the Guyanese dollar, paying for a house not to the details of the deal's lawyer and a house sale gain with no tax calculation. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and currency of the transfer, gather source-of-funds documents for the bank in Georgetown and carry out the transfer through licensed partners until the money is credited.

Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: a lot depends on the amount, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.

A house in Georgetown: ownership passes through a lawyer

A foreigner buys a house or a plot in Guyana without special permission. Most urban property is held by transport, the local name for the title document. The transfer is handled by a lawyer: they check the seller's title, prepare the documents and register the deal in the deeds registry. So where and by what date to send the money is agreed with the lawyer in advance.

Taxes in Guyana: what matters for money sent

From 2026 income up to 140,000 Guyanese dollars ($670) a month is not taxed. Above that the rate is 25%, and on taxable income over 3.36 million Guyanese dollars ($17,000) a year 35%. A transfer from abroad itself is not taxed.

Gains from selling property are taxed at 20%. If the house was owned for more than 25 years there is no tax, and since 2019 it is also not paid when all the sale proceeds are put into a house of the same or higher price. There has been no inheritance tax since 1991: instead a fee of 0.5% is charged on an estate value above 100,000 Guyanese dollars ($480).

The transfer amount for Guyana and documents for the bank

Up to $10,000. The payment purpose is enough: family support, study, rent.

$10,000-100,000. A Guyanese bank will ask for a 6-month statement and a document on the money: a property sale contract, an income certificate or a gift deed.

From $100,000. A pack on the origin of wealth over several years is prepared, together with the house purchase or investment contract. How to put it together is covered in proof of source of funds, large sums in sending large sums abroad, and moving capital step by step on the capital relocation page. Ask a manager for the terms for a large transfer.

From Georgetown to Suriname, Brazil and the islands

Neighbouring Suriname lives with the dollar and the euro, and money goes there in the same dollars with no exchange. To Brazil a payment goes through a correspondent bank in reais or dollars. Guyana is part of the Caribbean Community, so many families keep ties with the islands: Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and Grenada, where a dollar is worth 2.70 of the local currency.
