Money is sent to Equatorial Guinea in euros or dollars to an account at a bank in Malabo or Bata, and it is credited in Central African CFA francs. The rate to the euro is fixed at 655.957, so from Spain and other euro area countries it is more convenient to send euros. Contracts and bank documents in the country are drawn up in Spanish.

From Spain to Malabo: the euro turns into francs at 655.957

Equatorial Guinea is the only country in Africa where Spanish is an official language, and it is also a member of the Central African monetary community. The country switched to the franc in 1985, and since 1999 its rate to the euro has not changed.

For transfers from Spain this is convenient: 20,000 euros give 13,119,140 francs, and the amount is known in advance. The dollar is converted through the euro; in early October 2026 it cost about 587 francs. How to send your sum without a double exchange, a manager will tell you.

The capital, Malabo, is on Bioko Island, and the largest city on the mainland is Bata; banks work in both cities. About the capital, see the Malabo page.

We will help you send money to Equatorial Guinea

Mistakes cost more than fees: euros changed into dollars and back, paying for a plot before the president's permit, documents without a Spanish translation and a large sum without papers on its origin. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and currency of the transfer, collect documents on the origin of the money for the bank in Malabo and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and the cost are with a manager in the chat: much depends on the amount, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.

The investment protection agreement with Spain: signed in Malabo in 2003

Spain and Equatorial Guinea signed the agreement on the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments on 22 November 2003 in Malabo, and it has been in force since 11 August 2009. The agreement protects investments of one country's investors in the other and their right to transfer investment income home.

For a business owner from Spain this is a support when transferring profit: a bank in Malabo carries out such a payment on the basis of a dividend decision and documents on the withholding tax paid. The currency rules themselves are common to the six countries of the community and have applied since 1 March 2019.

Land with the president's permit: how a plot is bought

Under Decree 140/2013 a foreigner or a company with foreign capital buys land with the president's permit, issued as a separate decision. Notaries and registrars check this permit at the deal, so money is transferred to the seller after it has been obtained.

If a purchase or construction needs a complex payment scheme, there are usually more options than it seems: a manager will choose a route.
