How to send money to Gabon in 2026: CFA francs to a resident's account and wallet, euros and dollars to a non-resident's currency account

6 min read ·

Money reaches Gabon by bank transfer, and the currency credited depends on the recipient: a resident gets CFA francs to an account or mobile wallet, the bank exchanges euros at a fixed rate, and a non-resident keeps euros and dollars on a currency account. A Libreville bank asks the recipient and purpose, from $10,000 a statement and income proof.

What currency a transfer to Gabon arrives in: francs for residents, euros for non-residents

The currency rules of the six Central African countries are set by Regulation 02/18 of 21 December 2018, in force since 1 March 2019. Inside the union a foreign-currency account is opened for non-residents, and among residents only for companies with central bank permission. That is why a resident of Gabon receives a transfer straight in francs: the bank exchanges euros at the fixed rate and dollars at its own.

For a non-resident a foreign-currency account in Libreville is convenient for large sums: the euros stay unexchanged until the payment is due. It is topped up by transfer from abroad in currency.

Sending money to a wallet in Gabon and across Central Africa

Since 10 July 2020 the Central African interbank system has linked the wallets of different operators and the bank accounts of the six union countries. A transfer from a wallet in Libreville goes to a wallet in Yaoundé or to a bank account in Port-Gentil in the same francs.

According to the Bank of Central African States report on payment services, in 2024 the union received 1,354.7 billion francs from abroad, over $2.2 billion, 77.3% more than a year earlier. There were 7.81 million transactions, and the main source was the European Union, with 804 billion francs. Need to send money to family's wallets and keep savings in euros? A manager will suggest a route for each sum.

183 days in Gabon: when income is taxed on a scale up to 35%

Under article 74 of the tax code, income tax is paid by those who live in Gabon permanently or have spent 183 days in the country in a year. A resident pays tax on worldwide income, a non-resident on income from Gabon. The scale under article 174 rises from 0 to 35%.

A plot in Libreville for a project: through a company

The land ownership regime is set by the ordinance of 26 February 2026, which parliament ratified in the summer of 2026. The right is confirmed by a land title, which is final and irrevocable. The 2024 Constitution guarantees ownership to citizens, and the Constitutional Court has ruled that the state may grant a plot to a company, including a foreign one.

For a hotel by the park, a forestry project or an office in Libreville the money goes to a company account, while for a private person renting a home is more convenient. A manager will go through the project and the order of paying for the plot.

What to attach to a transfer to Gabon: from family support to a plot

Banks check clients under union Regulation 01/2016 on combating money laundering of 11 April 2016, supervision is carried out by the Central African Banking Commission, and the country has its own financial intelligence unit. In 2026 the papers depend on the amount:

$10,000 - $100,000where the sender's money comes froma bank statement, an income certificate
